Today I want to provide an update on the part-time work providing remote collaboration and supervision. This is also known as working as a remote medical director. One of the attractive parts of this job is that you are paid for being AVAILABLE for collaboration. So, you can generate income while doing other things to some extent.

It’s something that I have been doing for the past 2 ½ years. I've been the medical director for a new urgent care network since 2014. Four years ago I began cutting back on my clinic hours and completely withdrew 2 years ago from direct patient care. However I still serves as remote medical director, collaborating as needed with APNs and PAs, updating policies, reviewing charts, and performing other medical director duties.

In today’s presentation, I focus on providing these services through third-party companies that find opportunities for collaborating physicians, connecting them with healthcare organizations that need help. This presentation is the recording of a Q&A Session held in January of this year. You can learn about these free sessions by signing up for my emails at nonclinicalphysicians.com/dailyemail.

Emma Nichols, PhD, first appeared on the PNC podcast to discuss one of the most popular freelance nonclinical jobs available to physicians and other clinicians: medical writing. In today’s replay from 2018, we’re provided a comprehensive overview of freelance medical writing.

Emma has a doctorate in molecular biology and started writing professionally early in her career. She quickly became a seasoned medical communications professional specializing in continuing medical education and medical news writing. Her company, Nascent Medical, now provides expert medical writing services through its team of experienced MD- and PhD-level writers.

In addition to being a seasoned medical writer, she has been teaching others how to set up and market their own medical writing businesses through her Six-Week Course on Freelance Medical Writing. In fact, several of my podcast guests have completed her course prior to starting their own medical writing careers.

This week, John focuses on one of the 3 popular nonclinical careers he discussed in last week’s episode, that of hospital Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

He uses the 100 Top Hospitals Award as a model for physicians to identify the expertise they should develop to fulfill the role of CMO. He describes the components of the Top 100 Hospital Award:

Mortality Rate Complication Rate Healthcare Associated Infection Rate 30-Day Mortality Rate 30-Day Readmission Rate Length of Stay Spending Per Beneficiary Expense Per Discharge HCAHPS (Patient Satisfaction) Scores Adjusted Operating Profit Margin

Looking at this list, in most hospitals the CMO is the professional with the training and experience most able to address the first 6 items. Knowing that, it behooves physicians planning to seek a CMO role to develop experience in hospital quality improvement and patient safety, utilization management, coding and documentation, infection prevention, and information management.

During this short tutorial, John describes how physicians can efficiently develop those skills through part-time volunteer and paid roles in their hospitals using this model to direct them.

This week, John describes why it is natural to want to “level up” your career once you have accomplished all you want to do as a clinician, using professional athletes and attorneys as examples. Leveling up is a process of taking your career to the next level by building on your education, training, and experience to a new level of satisfaction and income.

He does this by selecting and describing the 3 most popular full-time nonclinical careers. Each year thousands of physicians are recruited for these positions. They generally offer excellent benefits, competitive salaries, and room for advancement.

John describes their pros and cons and lists resources to use to find and land your first job. For those who don’t want to spend 6 to 12 months researching all possible options, focusing on these jobs in the hospital, biopharma, and health insurance industries will help accelerate your transition.

Dr. Armin Feldman is a psychiatrist who learned to work with attorneys as an expert witness early in his career. Through his coaching and support, he instructs physicians on the medicine involved, and the marketing, operational, legal, and financial aspects necessary to create a viable consulting business.

Today I present Part 2 of the classic interview from 2019. In this show, Dr. Andrew Wilner, author of The Locum Life, describes why he loves medical writing and locum tenens as career options.

In Part 1 last week, we learned how he became a neurologist and epileptologist who spent years as a full-time medical writer. Now he is Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center where he provides direct patient care and teaches neurology residents on the inpatient and outpatient services.

He also hosts a podcast called The Art of Medicine. And he has written a book called The Locum Life: A Physicians Guide to Locum Tenens, the definitive resource on this topic.

In Part 2 we’ll get much more into locum tenens work, and how he took what he learned to write The Locum Life. With that as an introduction, we will pick up where we left off with Andrew getting back into clinical medicine after a ten-year hiatus.

Today I present another classic interview, this time from 2019. In this show, Dr. Andrew Wilner, author of The Locum Life, describes why he loves medical writing and locum tenens as career options.

In Part 1, Andrew recalls how much he loved writing, and how he felt compelled to get back into writing after completing his initial medical training. We also hear about his very early locums position working in an emergency room.

During our conversation, he described the exact approach that enabled him to write for multiple medical publications, while remaining current in his specialty of Neurology. Dr. Phil Boucher completed medical school and pediatric residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He has been in private practice since 2014. He was first featured on the PNC Podcast in December of 2020. He is known for integrating cutting-edge technologies in medical offices, whether to communicate better with patients, improve productivity, or market the practice.

In today’s interview, Dr Phil Boucher returns to the podcast to address two updates. First, he describes how he decided to open his own Direct Primary Care Practice in 2022. He explains that it takes more planning and managing than working as an employee in a large group. But there are many benefits, which he describes during our conversation.

We spend the remaining time discussing his new side business. It grew out of a desire to address 2 problems facing many small medical practices:

filling schedule openings due to cancellations without using up staff to call patients
on a waiting list (OpenSpot at findopenspot.com), and helping new practices generate more leads during the early years by automating new
patient engagement (Practice Leads at getpracticeleads.com).

Phil describes the process he went through to develop both tools. And he explains how he was able to generate seed money by joining Founder University and applying to other start-up accelerators.

Today I present another classic interview from 2020. In this show, Dr. Emily Woolcock describes why she loves being an Independent Medical Examiner.

Dr. Woolcock is an internationally recognized speaker, best-selling author, mentor, and consultant. She is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. And she is among the country’s most well-known and respected orthopedic surgeons.

In 2016 she established the IME Academy where she teaches students to perform defensible, literature-based independent medical examinations (or IMEs). Emily is passionate about helping other physicians break free from the devastating work/life balance issues she experienced early in her career.

In today’s interview, you will hear why this career option is so attractive to many physicians. As an IME, you can apply your medical knowledge and experience. The income is very good. However, the stress level is low and the risk of finding yourself in a medical liability lawsuit is
    negligible.

Drawing parallels between healthcare and other workplaces, the book highlights the damaging consequences of outdated models and language.

During our interview, Dr. Byrne describes the hallmark features of moral injury and provides examples of colleagues, clients, and patients who have experienced it.
