I found this question in Arthur Brooks' book The Meaning of Your Life, and it's stuck with me since. Why are you alive? And what, or who, would you actually die for, right now, today? In this episode of Philosophika, we run that question through seven schools of ancient philosophy, from Socrates to the Skeptics. No answer gets handed to you at the end. Just you, and a question worth taking seriously.

Everyone from Socrates to the Stoics talked about virtue like it’s obvious what it means. It isn’t. In this first episode of Philosophika, we ask why virtue was such a central obsession in ancient philosophy, and trace four very different answers to what it actually is. Socrates thought it was knowledge. Aristotle thought it was trained excellence. The Stoics thought it was the only true good. The Epicureans thought it was a means to a calmer life.
By the end, you’ll walk away with a clearer sense of what the word actually meant to the people who built their entire lives around it, and a real question to think about what it means for how you live now.
