  • In this episode of PAC Talk, I dive into the top 12 common mistakes people make in the gym that hold back their fitness progress. From excessive cardio and poor dietary habits to neglecting proper mechanics and the pitfalls of overtraining, I cover every aspect. Each of these errors can significantly impede achieving your fitness goals, and I'm here to guide you on how to avoid them.

    Mistakes Discussed:

Endless Cardio and Calorie Restriction: Often referred to as "cardio bunny syndrome," this mistake involves excessive cardio and severe calorie restrictions.Never Doing Cardio and Eating Too Much: On the flip side, some neglect cardio and are not mindful of their dietary intake.Confusing Sweating with Working Out: Simply sweating a lot does not necessarily mean you are working out effectively.Overestimating Calories Burned: Many people overestimate how many calories they burn and underestimate the calories they should consume.Focusing on Weight Over Form: Prioritizing the amount of weight lifted over the correct form, tension, and range of motion.Choosing the Wrong Method for Your Goals: Not aligning your workout method with the fitness results you aim for.Ignoring Mechanics Over Strength: Failing to recognize issues with mechanics rather than strength.Doing the Same Thing Over and Over: Lacking variation in workouts or changing them too frequently without progression.Believing in a Magical Diet: Relying on an idealistic diet rather than practical nutritional balance. Not Getting Blood Work Done: Not monitoring bodily metrics which can lead to frustration from unseen issues.Overtraining and Undertraining: Both extremes can hinder progress and overall fitness.Blaming Others and Not Being Accountable: Faulting external factors without acknowledging personal responsibility in fitness setbacks.

  • Today is a very special episode. Our 100 episode! Thanks for staying with me on this journey. I can think of no guests I would rather have than two friends who have been members at PHAROS since the start. Jake Taylor and Robert Campbell. It’s even more special as this year Jake Taylor, one of our own homegrown talents, qualified for the final of the Crossfit Games! Both of these athletes are absolute specimens who have redefined what fitness can look like in your 40’s and 50’s. Always learning, always growing, and with no signs of slowing down, they have found the secret sauce to balancing work, family, and fitness. As their company BOLT (best cafe in LA) has grown, so has their ability and endeavor. We talk about the journey, the lessons, and how we went from the grit of the shed to the bright lights of the fittest show on earth.

  • In this conversation, I have an in-depth chat with Lalo Torres, a CrossFit athlete, coach, and CrossFit P.A.C. athlete. We discuss Lalo's background in gymnastics and Cirque du Soleil, his transition to CrossFit, and the challenges of balancing coaching and competing. We also touch on the importance of social media for athletes and the need for great coaches in the industry. I share my passion for creating excellent gym spaces and the importance of offering a variety of equipment and accessories.

The conversation explores the importance of creating a balanced fitness environment that caters to different needs and preferences. It discusses the need for gyms to offer more than just CrossFit classes and to provide a variety of training options. The conversation also emphasizes the importance of coaching and the ability to customize workouts for individuals. It highlights the value of discipline and consistency in fitness, as well as the need to prioritize overall well-being and avoid becoming overly consumed by competition. The conversation concludes with a discussion on building a personal brand and using fitness as a tool for self-expression.

This is Part 1 of a 2-part conversation, as we had so much to cover. Please listen, enjoy, like, and share. Thanks always, and see you in the gym!

  • Welcome back to the rewind podcast series, going back over our favorite podcasts over the years. This podcast is on what I call high-performance hypertrophy. This came about from my love of bodybuilding and CrossFit, wanting to get the best of both worlds, build muscle, look good, feel good, and still feel capable and athletic while still focusing on some aesthetic stuff. So I basically combined a lot of bodybuilding exercises with a lot of CrossFit-type exercises, and it basically evolved into something called high-performance hypertrophy. And a lot of the programs that I write, especially for Build fall into this category.

This program is now available to all those on the Limitless Challenge. We cover why it exists, who it’s for, what it requires, and what can be expected from it. It’s a tough program for tough people ... are you ready for it?

  • There has been a conflict raging since the dawn of time (we at least a few years) … Crossfit vs Bodybuilding: Who wins? I’ve spent a good amount of time in both, I have friends who are devoted to both at the extremes of the sport. I ponder the questions in this week's podcast; the differences, the benefits, the limits, and the results … I’ve spent a good amount of time in both, I have friends who are devoted to both at the extremes of the sport.

  • Pharos Fit Rewind #3 - Train to Avoid Pain

This next podcast is trying to avoid pain with Emylee Covell, who is an expert in all things prehab, rehab, and mobility. We talk about assessing, position activation, ranges of motion, and adhesion. We want people to stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible. It's not just about breaking the body down all the time with exercise. It's about building the body up and being smart as well as hard.

Feeling pain doesn’t mean your body has failed. In fact, it signals a body doing its job by letting you know something’s up. By heeding its wise (if blunt) counsel, you can effectively identify and deal with the cause.

For most of us, the natural response to pain signals is resistance—to push them away or deny that they even exist. Yet ignoring pain only serves to add an extra layer of angst to an already unpleasant situation. Not only do you still have the pain to deal with, but now you have to keep up the ruse that the pain isn’t really there. Inviting pain in is the first step to understanding how to come to terms with it.

Today I'm joined with my co-owner and wife Emylee Covell co-owner of Pharos Athletic Club. Overcoming an unhealthy childhood of obesity, rheumatoid arthritis and hip dysplasia, Emylee sought a healthier life by challenging her preconceived notions of what her body was capable of. She has student Kinesiology at USC before and is certified in ACE, CMTC, Myokinesis Integration and CrossFit L1.

Here at Pharos e do a lot of lifting, we do a lot of moving, we do a lot of running, and we do a lot of boxing. And as we know, the more things we do, the more things we need to recover from. So for today's episode, we sit down with Emylee Covell and talk about the best ways to prepare for and to recover from activity in and out of the gym.

  • This is episode two of our Pharos Rewind series. This is the second podcast we ever did and goes into the 7 pillars of Pharos Athletic Club. We developed these pillars to really cement our vision, our purpose, our goals, and what we stand for at Pharos Athletic Club. I think every company should develop pillars like these. It really reminds us who we are and what we want to do. It sets the foundation for the company and as we move forward with any forward motion, we always go back to these pillars. We do this because this is what's important to us. This is what matters. Through the good times, and bad times, whatever happens, you always have to go back to your pillars and remind yourself who you are and what you want to do in the business that you run. So I hope you guys enjoy it. Let me know your thoughts and I'll see you in the gym real soon.

    The 7 Pillars

    1 SHOW UP

    2 BUILD OTHERS

    3 NOTICE THE LITTLE THINGS

    4 CHASE KNOWLEDGE

    5 ANTICIPATE THE CURRENTS

    6 MOVE WITH PURPOSE

    7 LEAD WITH LIGHT

It's not about the workout, it's about the sensation you have in your body when you leave the building. No one remembers the workout but, they remember feeling great and that starts with the moment they walk into the building.
