    A high or total spinal blockade is one of the most feared anesthetic complications for providers on L&D. High or total spinal epidural blockade occurs when local anesthetic spreads too high within the neuraxial space and causes a variety of symptoms such as difficulty breathing, arm and upper body weakness, respiratory depression and even hemodynamic collapse.

  • Cesarean deliveries are commonly performed under neuraxial anesthesia, allowing the patient to remain awake and experience the birth of their child. This practice, when done well, is one of the great successes of modern medicine.
