Listen in as they explain how fascia influences movement and adaptability - not just during intense exercise but also during our everyday activities. Fascia can thicken or soften and adapt to repeated stress - so whether it's weightlifting or long periods of sitting, it learns to meet the demand of “that performance”. It is constantly seeking a balance between performance and recovery.

That really is key to long-term health. And another is the precious gift of pandiculation. It’s a myofascial reset and it’s a super power, whatever your activity!!

So tune in to learn how to do this ultimate reset for peak performance and wellbeing, to hear about the fascia matrix and its dynamic nature, and to learn more about preventive healing strategies.

  • We've discovered a long-lost never-heard-before interview with the brilliant Paul Thornley from 2021, and simply had to share it with you!! In it Paul shares the transformative power of combining martial arts with neuromuscular therapy, distinguishing how classical biomechanics and holistic, 21st century anatomy do - or don’t - make sense of our embodied existence. He does this in such a unique way that it inspires all of us to ask new questions to truly improve our overall wellness.

Before Myofascial Magic In Action even began, Joanne and Paul joined forces out of a mutual passion for understanding human living architecture as soft matter; which has different rules altogether to most classical-based training. This episode shares Paul's unique approach, after decades of training in Karate, the British Army, Pilates and Brazilian Jujitsu all combined with ENMT; which is European Neuromuscular Therapy.

Whether you’re interested in gait improvement or seeking to deepen your understanding of integrative health and therapies, or simply want to move better - this conversation offers valuable health insights. So join us as we explore the vital role of connective tissue and fascia integration, and learn how these elements contribute to systemic wellness, walking efficiency, and much much more.

  • Dr. Jean-Claude Guimberteau delves into the incredible world of fascia, providing biological insights and anatomy clarity on why being alive matters. Explore fascia functions and gain a deeper understanding of the human body in this fascinating conversation.

Dr Guimberteau is famous for his videos of the Fascia Matrix IN VIVO. In vivo means “in the living body”, and in this interview Dr. Guimberteau points out that we make different conclusions when we learn in these different ways - and it matters.

Fascia is essentially, our living tissue architecture. It’s alive and well to the extent that we are - and you could say we are alive and well to the extent that it is! Essentially, your fascia is organising you anyway - and Dr Guimberteau tells us why the way we learn is so important.

In fact it matters so much that we decided to re-release this gem of a conversation from our archives so that more of you can hear it. We also talk about the inspiration and motivation behind bringing his work to the public domain, the relationship between fractal chaos and efficient movement, and the non-linear nature of all biological forms.

Dr Guimberteau also treated us to some philosophical reflections on the deep wisdom that comes when we accept the unpredictable nature of the fascial fibres within us...

    ABOUT DR JEAN CLAUDE GUIMBERTEAU
Dr Jean-Claude Guimberteau is co-founder and scientific director of the Institut Aquitain de la Main, and former President of the French Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2011-2012) (SOFCPRE). Through his innovative use of video-endoscopy investigating the fascia matrix, Dr Guimberteau has revolutionised our understanding of living human architecture.Find out more at https://www.endovivo.com/

  • In this episode Joanne addresses a fascinating question about micro movement, from a Myofascial Magic in Action course participant. She unpacks why daily micro movements can lead to such significant improvements in wellbeing, explaining this phenomenon through the key concepts of challenge, courage, and care.

Could it be that these small, mindful movements can serve our wellbeing as much (if not more than) the grand physical achievements we might strive to achieve? Is this the missing link in understanding myofascia applied? How exactly does the body’s natural ability to self-organize link to overall health? What can we learn from Joanne’s elegant 85 year old mother...?

And, most importantly, given the knowledge of the fascia matrix behind the work, how can these subtle practices transform our health and human performance?

    Let’s find out!

  • In this episode Joanne and Paul explore the evolution of movement science, emphasising the non-linear, self-organising nature of human bodies. With a delightful blend of historical anecdotes, personal stories, and foundational research, they challenge the traditional biomechanical approach to human movement.

Joanne reveals how an 18th century mechanical duck offers insights into why we’ve long thought mechanically about the human body (and we all know Joanne’s NOT a fan of this approach!), while Paul passionately argues for the immense benefits of using intuitive, fascia-based movement practice over conventional exercise protocols.

PLUS, Joanne gives you a sneak peek into her yet-to-be-published book, ‘Myofascial Magic in Action’.

So listen in for a deep, thought-provoking conversation that might just change how you think about movement (and ducks) forever. Enjoy!

  • In this week’s episode I interview Dinah Siman, a wonderful multi-talented teacher who practices Pilates, Yoga and Gyrotonic™, and has made her name in recent years by specialising in Menopause Pilates. Now also an author, Dinah aims to impassion movement teachers to celebrate menopause and give confidence to support students during this transformative phase.

We talk about both the history and the current understanding of menopause, Dinah generously shares her own journey, and I especially love her thoughts about the opportunities menopause can offer if it's well understood and well supported.

Regardless of your personal practice or what you teach, this book truly is written from the heart and designed to give everyone a sense of confidence and well-being in what can be a difficult time to navigate. Written with Dinah’s lively sense of humour and backed by science (but not loaded to be a ‘heavy read’) we get to chat about how the book works, why it felt so important to write, and why it’s a must-buy for anyone who is (or works with) women in movement!! So I really hope you enjoy this conversation and find a lot of value in it.

  • This episode is inspired by important questions we’re very often asked by movement teachers about cueing and language.

So... What exactly do we all mean by the word Stretch? Or Stabilise? Or Strengthen? Or Stiffen? Is Stress always a bad thing, or can it actually be a good thing sometimes? We explore each word and its implications, as well as how we can use them wisely….or not so wisely!!

Again and again, we hear these 5 ‘S words’ come up, regardless of the particular modality a teacher is using, whether it is Pilates, or Yoga or 5 Rhythms, or Dance or Personal Training or Martial Arts - whatever you may teach. It’s crucial to consider these words carefully in order to enhance how the practice, whatever it is, makes sense to the person you are teaching. And of course, Cueing, Seeing, and Guiding clients well requires us to use a language THEY understand….this is not so much a formula as a discussion about the ingredients!!

Hopefully there’s some important food for thought here for you, to enhance the delicious movements you already create for the people you work with…Enjoy!

Focusing particularly on Yoga and Pilates, we make the important distinction between “delicious” bespoke movement and "fast food" one-size-fits-all movement... We also share stories about the highlights and lowlights of teaching - see if you recognise your own experiences here!

We hope you enjoy hearing how we rate the Michelin Star movement experiences we’ve loved, and that some of our comments will cause that magical laughter of recognition to light you up with a smile!

  • In this episode Paul and Joanne respond to a question they received about the value of Neural Flossing or Spinal Flossing. The question “to floss or not to floss?” is one worth considering – and even if you disagree, this conversation might expand the questions you ask!

Joanne wasn’t entirely sure what the term meant, so by asking Paul, this conversation unfolded. It isn’t intended to ruffle any feathers or diminish the work of very well-intentioned therapists, but we do challenge the notion of how valuable “flossing” is - by the interpretation we use. In any event, it is super clear that the value of micromovements might just provide a simpler answer to the problems that “flossing” is intended to resolve... See what you think!

  • This week’s episode is Joanne's response to a request – to talk about Geometry and what it means in understanding the body. It’s a fascinating exploration.

Joanne's response includes a reading from her book Yoga Fascia Anatomy and Movement. She talks about how important Geometry is to our form – and how the ancient wisdom behind Yoga and the Sanskrit language (among other languages) is much incredibly sophisticated.

It is really an invitation to appreciate how complex and brilliant the body is - literally and symbolically. We hear how, in the East (where the being and the body were not separated and segregated from each other) such a unified system incorporates sound, and the geometry that makes sense of our nature...

“Both of us have had the privilege of working with – indeed – learning with, John Sharkey – and we are better practitioners for having been in the Lab with him on so many occasions...”

You will hear all about that in this podcast, as well as learning about many of the eye-opening, empowering, and downright surprising discoveries we've both made through our own dissection journeys.

  • Competitive versus Collective – this is such an important theme in the personal and the professional field – especially in bodywork and movement therapy. Exploring these ideas can be so helpful in expanding our awareness of other modalities, and enhancing the actual work we do!

In this episode Joanne Avison considers how we can sometimes be in competition with ourselves – and how it can work to give ourselves the opportunity to “collect” a broader base of information and grow with it...

This theme, of the power of the collective, is deep to Cynthia Allen’s ethos in the upcoming Move Better Feel Better Summit this year, where Joanne will be speaking on Sunday 5th May. It's all online and FREE to join and receive this collective wisdom, so click below to find out all about it!
