  • I loved chatting with Seonaidh (pronounced 'Shona') Jamieson. She is not only a laugh-a-minute (cue no knickers segment!), but she also has some great advice for how to think differently (she combines equestrianism and pole dancing), how to work with neurodivergence and how she makes her ADHD work for her! Seonaidh has always been fascinated by the things that stop us doing what we want to do. Author of 'Why You Skipped Your Workout', she rebels against "Just do it" culture and instead seeks to understand the invisible barriers in our lives, and then help you find ways to overcome them. She believes in making the steps easier so your goals become inevitable, and in many cases, that starts with looking at your expectations. Seonaidh is a business growth coach, combining her years' experience coaching horse riders and pole dancers, her project management experience in the conservation sector, and her 10 years' experience running her own businesses. • I was thrilled to invite Sue Dyson onto my podcast. We chatted about how Sue evented and show-jumped to a high level and why studying veterinary science and researching lameness mean so much to her. We talked about her work and her most recent documentary - 'Horses and the Science of Harmony' as well as her previous documentary - 'The 24 Behaviors of the Ridden Horse in Pain: Shifting the Paradigm of How We See Lameness' (both are excellent and very accessible to all horse lovers, see links below..Here's a little more information about Sue: Sue Dyson specialised in lameness and poor performance throughout her long veterinary career. In addition, Sue is a rider and has produced horses to the top national level in both eventing and show jumping, which have subsequently competed at European and World Championships and Olympic Games. Sue is also a British Horse Society Instructor (Teaching and Stable Management)After working for 37 years at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, running a clinical referral service for lameness and poor performance, attracting clients from all over the United Kingdom, Ireland and continental Europe, Sue is now an independent consultant. Sue has published more than 450 papers in peer reviewed journals concerning lameness and diagnostic imaging and has lectured worldwide. She is passionate about the interrelationships between horses and riders and promoting better understanding of the interactions between training, riders, tack and horses and how horses adapt to musculoskeletal discomfort. • In this episode, we delve into the often daunting topic of failure, challenging its negative connotations, particularly in the realm of equestrian training. Drawing from NLP principles, we argue that there is no such thing as failure—only feedback and learning opportunities.

Explore how neurochemicals like dopamine and adrenaline play pivotal roles in equestrian training, impacting motivation and learning processes. We examine how these chemicals help repel negativity from setbacks and instead enhance focus, resilience, and skill acquisition.

Learn how to manage stress effectively, utilise naturally occurring substances to maintain a balanced mindset, whether you are a competitive rider or enjoy the occasional hack. Embrace failures as they pave the way to success and personal growth.

  • Ronnie King is an intuitive animal communicator and works with horse owners and their equines. She developed and honed her skills after her horse had physical problems, which expert vets, chiropractors and physios couldn't pinpoint. She believes that our horses have a genuine desire to work with us and help us in whatever way they can.

Ronnie is also a trained equine massage therapist, and although she rarely sees clients for massage anymore, it has helped her to give owners even more information.

Take a listen - Ronnie is such a warm and generous lady, I'm sure you'll be very intrigued by what she has to say! Listen to her podcast, Equine Voices on whatever platform you like to use for podcasts!

  • Habits or patterns in the brain are wonderful for automating our actions. Not so wonderful if you have a bad habit you want to crack. However, our brains can help us out - they are perfect at making, breaking and tweaking habits, whether they are physical (e.g., heavy hands), mental (le.g., lack of self-confidence) or emotional (e.g., anxiety).

On this episode I'm talking about 3 brain hacks to help you make good habits and break the bad ones.

  • Have you a current issue, problem or belief about you as a rider or about riding? Something that is bothering you?

Did you know that by changing the verb tense, you can make it seem more distant, more abstract and make it into a smaller issue in your mind? Did you know that all it takes is a very subtle change in your language?

It's something you can easily do all the time, and when done every day and you'll see big changes over time.

  • Lisa needs no introduction, to find out more about her extensive work in the equine field, see below.

Lisa Ashton MBA, PGCE, BA (Hons) ESI Diploma, BHS Stage 4 Senior Coach in Complete Horsemanship, Pony Club A’Test Lisa is the UK authority in the application of Equitation Science, communicating for over two decades the science of how horses learn, globally recognised by her intersectional approach to leading positive change inside equestrian organisations: Blue Cross, Redwings, Bransby, The Horse Trust, Greater Manchester Police, UK universities and colleges, UK vets/veterinary practices, British Veterinary Nursing Association, and International dressage stud, Mount St. John (2016-present). In 2022 Lisa joined as Senior Lecturer the MSc Equitation Science team, Hartpury University. Winning the student nominated award for Expert In Their Field 2024, Lisa combines Equitation Science industry leadership with an obsessive commitment to up-skilling young persons in horse interactions. Lisa founded EquiSci in 2011 to solve the challenge for equestrians of achieving a true connection with their horse. Offering inclusive and diverse educational opportunities, equestrians understand the why, what and how of horse training by communicating equitation science via clinics, workshops, lectures, webinars and conferences, throughout the UK and Italy. Then in 2016 Lisa identified a fast growing need for a safe space for equestrians to explore their own journeys, and so the first psychologically safe online equestrian community was created, Coffee With Horse Lovers. Equestrians experience a safe online space to practice curiosity, explore new knowledge and reflect on their responsiveness to the lived experience of the horse.

  • Authenticity and being your authentic self don't simply support mental well-being, they are the foundational cornerstone of well-being. On this episode, I talk about the statue of David by Michaelangelo metaphor and how it could help you to be the true you, whether at the yard, with fellow equestrians or competing and why that is important to you in releasing yourself from limitations.
