Today’s special LIVE bonus episode centers around former Family Promise of Spokane guests. Those who found FPS, went through our program, and are now no longer homeless. They ended the cycle of homelessness for their families. This episode was recorded live so some of the audio is a bit hard to hear. We ask that you still listen because these voices are important to hear.
This episode was made possible by the support of our title sponsors, Providence and Wellpoint.
Thank you most of all to our panelists, Wulan, Jamie, Musa, and Norm.

Today’s important conversation centers around when homelessness and disabilities intersect.
First, a disclaimer: homelessness is a complex issue. I’ve been reminded of that throughout each of the conversations we’ve had. This conversation is no different. We don’t claim to explore every part of this intersection, but hope that each conversation brings new clarity to the reality as a whole. Please keep an open, curious mindset as you listen, and seek to learn, just as we are.
The disability community is rapidly evolving to using identity-first language like disabled person, in place of person-first language like a person who has a disability. This is because it views disability as being a core component of identity, much like race and gender. Some members of the community, such as people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, prefer person-first language. In this episode, the terms may be used interchangeably.

Does homelessness have an essential role in society? Can we actually live in a community without homeless persons? In fact, this scale of homelessness is a modern problem, but has historic roots. In 2022, there were more homeless children in American than there were homeless people during the entirety of the American Great Depression. Why has it come this far, and what legislation would need to occur to correct our trajectory? Join our hosts, Joe Ader and Emma Hughes as they dive into these questions, and so much more.

One of our hosts, Emma Hughes introduces the podcast and discusses her hopes for this season. At the heart of it, homelessness results when. You did something bad. Something bad was done to you. Or circumstance. At the heart of it all, homelessness is a loss of community. Join us in exploring where the system struggles to truly solve homelessness, how issues of our time intersect and where personal responsibility is required. The only true common factor that leads to homelessness is a loss of community. There isn't a second cousin or close friend willing to give you a couch to stay on anymore, there is no church or non-profit of community group willing to lend you rent. No one to help you work your way out of addiction, fight against systemic injustices, or even just fix your car. Homelessness is an incredibley complex issue, but doesn't have to be. Come with us on an educational and empathy building journey, where the complex intersections of homelessness & "___________" will be slowly untangled, and we get to a point where we can and will end the cycle of homelessness, together.
