It's Election Day and we're back with another presidential episode "Ohio v. the 25th Amendment." We look at two major presidential health emergencies that were covered up prior to the 25th Amendment and the history of presidential infirmity. First is the story of Woodrow Wilson's massive stroke in the fall of 1919 and how the 1st lady, Edith Wilson, became the first female president. And we look at a secret presidential surgery at sea for Grover Cleveland's cancer.
Alex is joined by author William Hazelgrove to discuss his book Madam President (2016) about Edith Wilson, our 1st woman president. We analyze their quick courtship and Wilson reaching the heights of global popularity following WWI. The political battle at home over the League of Nations leads Wilson to a cross-country whistle stop tour that ends in a massive stroke. We cover the little-known history surrounding Edith Wilson taking over the executive branch in her husband's absence and the lengths she went to coverup the extent of his illness.
Our second story covers Grover Cleveland's emergency surgery at sea for cancer during his second term. Author Annette Dunlap rejoins the program to discuss Cleveland's health scare and the celebrity status of his wife Frances Folsom Cleveland. Link below to Dunlap's Frances Cleveland biography Frank: America's Youngest First Lady (2009). Friend of the pod, Bruce Carlson discusses how Grover Cleveland became the only two, non-consecutive term President in US history (at the time of this recording). Check out Bruce's excellent political history podcast My History Can Beat Up Your Politics (link below).
City of Buffalo Historian, Lindsey Lauren Visser rejoins the show to outline the coverup of Cleveland's cancer and the surgery to remove it aboard the Oneida, a yacht in the summer of 1893. Lindsey shares the dangers of the surgery and how the intricate coverup comes unraveled. But Cleveland's teams efforts to discredit the journalist EJ Edwards who broke the story led to the writer's career being ruined.

Four American Presidents have been assassinated in office. Two of them are among the most infamous moments in US history, the Lincoln and JFK assassinations. The "other" two assassinated Presidents were both from the Buckeye State: William McKinley and James Garfield. Unfortunately, the events of this campaign season have brought presidential assassinations back into the news. Alex looks at the extraordinary events surrounding James Garfield's killing in 1881 and McKinley's assassination 20 years later in 1901. We talk with 6 different leading experts on both presidents in new interviews and re-edited interviews from our original McKinley and Garfield episodes from 2020.
We visit with the city historian for Buffalo, NY, Lindsey Lauren Visser, about the death of our 25th president, Canton, Ohio's own William McKinley. McKinley was shot at the Pan American Exhibition in Buffalo by a deranged anarchist, Leon Czolgosz. Czolgosz's journey to political murder begins as a factory worker in Cleveland, Ohio who is radicalized following the Panic of 1893 to an ardent anarchist, a popular subculture at the turn of the century. We also revisit conversations with Anthony Greco, the Director of Exhibits at the Buffalo History Museum and the host of the excellent Buffalo History Museum Podcast. Link below for that show and give a listen to their 3 part episode on the McKinley assassination. We also talk to University of Akron history professor Kevin Kern and excellent biographer Robert Merry buy his book President McKinley: Architect of the American Century with link below.
The "other" assassination is the killing of Mentor, Ohio's James A. Garfield the 20th President of the United States. Garfield was shot by a mentally ill office seeker at a DC train station in the Summer of 1881. His shooting by Charles Guiteau is just the start of the story as Garfield lives for 80 days after the shooting. His terrible and negligent medical care was the cause of his slow, painful death. We replay our great interview with our favorite current historian, Candice Millard, and her excellent 2012 book Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President (2012). Buy this book! Link below as well. We also talked to the former Site Manager of the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, Todd Arrington. Also, check out Todd's book The Last Lincoln Republican: The Presidential Election of 1880 on President Garfield's unlikely election victory.

Episode 6: "Ohio v. Cancel Culture". Seems like everyone is getting cancelled these days from celebrities to political figures, Alex examines five historical examples of cancelled Ohioans to show cancel culture is not just a thing of the present. We sit down to tell 5 stories from the 18th, 19th and 20th Century Ohio that could just as easily been ripped from today's headlines.
Alex talks with friend and host of the great podcast Whiskey Business, Dino Tripodis, about the famous oddsmaker and TV personality Jimmy "the Greek" Snyder of Steubenville, Ohio. We follow Jimmy the Greek's improbable rise to stardom and his sudden fall from grace following a racist outburst in 1988. Check out Dino and his show Whiskey Business, also part of the Evergreen Podcast Network, here. www.whiskeybusinesspod.com
We head back to the 18th Century with Ohio author and historian, Kevin Kern, to discuss the cancellation of the first Governor of the Northwest Territory, Arthur St. Clair. Kern, author and Univ. of Akron history professor, talks about the St. Clair's notorious military career and defeat in the Northwestern Indian War and his dictatorial reign as governor of the Ohio Territory in the late 18th and early 19th Century. Kevin and Mark Wagoner take us through the career of controversial Senator William Allen of Chillicothe, OH. Kevin describes Allen's prominence as one of Ohio's most famous Democrats of the 19th Century, including becoming Governor in his 70s. Mark Wagoner describes the reasons behind removing Allen's statue as one of Ohio's two representatives in Statuary Hall at the US Capitol building and the process by which Allen was permanently replaced in 2016.
Kevin rejoins the show to discuss the sex scandal and cancelling of Rep. Wayne Hays in 1976. Kevin and I discuss his affair and coverup with his "secretary" Elizabeth Ray and the Belmont County natives downfall in the public eye in that bicentennial summer. We discuss why Wayne Hays was one of the meanest members of Congress and why nobody was sorry to see him go.
In a replay of an old episode from 2018, Alex sits down with author Patricia Miller to discuss her hit new book, Bringing Down the Colonel. Miller tells the story of a sex scandal involving a young Cincinnati college student, Madeline Pollard, and a powerful Congressman, William Breckinridge that would grip the nation's attention in the spring of 1894. The landmark case of Pollard v. Breckinridge is analyzed for its groundbreaking verdict and how this story still resonates today in the mines of the #MeToo Movement. Episode 4: "Ohio v. the 14th Amendment" John Bingham is one of the most important figures in American history to be all but forgotten. He drafted one of the most important Constitutional amendments: the 14th Amendment. Bingham spent decades 8 terms in Congress, prosecuted the Lincoln assassination conspirators and prosecuted the first ever Presidential Impeachment trial in 1868. We live with the rights his Constitutional amendment gave us, yet no one seems to remember his contributions.
We follow the Cadiz, Ohio native's career in politics and law. From his abolitionist roots in Eastern Ohio, to his decades in Washington, DC during the buildup to Civil War and Reconstruction. We sit down with Gerard Magliocca, professor of law at Indiana University and author of 2013 biography, American Founding Son: John Bingham and the Invention of the 14th Amendment. Link below to purchase Gerard's excellent book. We analyze Bingham's central role in Congress during those consequential years of American history and why he fought so hard for his Privileges and Immunity Clause and the Equal Protection/Due Process clause in the 14th Amendment.
We also welcome back Erik Archilla, co-creator, writer and producer of the hit audio drama, 1865, to the show to discuss John Bingham's prosecution of the Booth Conspriators, the Impeachment of President Andrew Johnson and the impact of the 14th Amendment on American history and the rights of US citizens today. Alex details the rise of anti-semitic and fascist groups during the Depression in America. These groups hatred of Jews, FDR and core American values spreads across the country and its roots begin in Ohio and the entire Midwest. The Radio Priest, Father Charles Coughlin, becomes the most popular media figure in US history. His demagoguery propels these anti-semitic ideas into the mainstream. Guest Andrew Layton of the Coughlin-based hit podcast Radioactive, joins the program to discuss the power of Coughlin and his hate filled radio sermons, especially in Cleveland. Bradley Hart and Mike Cikraji detail the forgotten pro-Nazi group, the German American Bund and how such a group of outcasts could actually sell out Madison Square Garden for a "Pro-American Rally" in 1939. Part Two: Ohio v. Fascism. The cautionary tale of the rise and fall of American Fascism in the 1930s is explored in detail in Part Two of our Season 8 premiere. Nazi Germany and her allies in the US are defeated as World War II begins in Europe but not without a fight. The propaganda effort finds an effective home on Capitol Hill with George Sylvester Viereck and a group of sympathetic Congressmen. The America First Committee finds massive support stateside with the help of celebrity members and none more important than American hero, Charles Lindbergh. Lindbergh and the AFC's conspiratorial and anti-semitic rhetoric further divides the country until a historic attack on America unites the country like never before. An Ohioan, back in the Reich, helps lead a failed sabotage mission on US soil that has dire consequences for the saboteurs.

FyreFest, Altamont, Woodstock '99, Astroworld are some of the biggest festival disasters in American history, today we'll look at some of the most flawed festivals in Ohio history in our Season 7 Finale.
We start with BalloonFest '86 a fatally flawed world record setting balloon release festival in Downtown Cleveland. We relive the ecological disaster and dangerous consequences of the City of Cleveland's releasing of 1.5 million balloons in September 1986. We're joined by Cleveland sports personality and Twitter legend Chris McNeill, better known as Reflog_18 on Twitter to discuss 1980s Cleveland and the ill-fated BalloonFest '86. We'll also talk about Chris McNeill's leading role in the "Perfect Season Parade" to protest the Cleveland Browns winless 2017 NFL season. Follow Reflog_18 on Twitter and check out his Ohio-based weekly sports show, the BIGPLAY Reflog Show here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjqGMjGtAUKxlthtZ7hXt7Q
Next we revisit the economic disaster that was AmeriFlora '92 in Columbus, Ohio. This horticultural exhibition was everything and nothing. Part theme park, part flower show, part mixed message branding nightmare. This $95 million boondoggle projected some 5+ million visitors but fell way short of those numbers. Tim Trad, the creator of onlyincbus, details the big swing and miss that was AmeriFlora '92. Follow @onlyincbus on Instagram and check out Tim's incredibly interesting content here www.onlyincbus.com
We go all the way back to the 1950s for one of the first failed music festivals in American history. We replay an interview from a previous episode with Jerry DePizzo of the famous Ohio rock band O.A.R. about 1952's Moondog Coronation Ball in Cleveland. The rock n' roll concert was hosted by the famous radio DJ Alan Freed, the man credited with popularizing the phrase rock n' roll. We follow Alan Freed's career and his disastrous event at the Cleveland Arena in March 1952, regarded by many as the first rock festival in the United States.
Lastly, we sit down with friend of the show Vince Tornero to discuss the wildly successful concert series the World Series of Rock in Cleveland during the 1970s. We hear clips from his great new podcast season for the Evergreen Podcast Network show PrOHfiles called The Wrath of the Buzzard. His show documents the meteoric rise and fall of 100.7 WMMS - the iconic Cleveland FM rock station that proved to be one of the most influential radio stations of all time. We also discuss the disasterous 1979 World Series of Rock that resulted in violence and even the breakup of the famous band Aerosmith following their headlining performance at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Alex tells the story of John Spano, the con man who managed to buy a National Hockey League team despite having almost no money. Spano's ill-fated purchase of the New York Islanders in 1997 is examined with the journalist who lead the investigation that exposed one of the biggest scams in American sports history. Alex is joined by John Valenti of Newsday on the 25th Anniversary of the the con man who nearly brought down an NHL franchise and the league's commissioner.
Spano, an Ohio native, had lied about nearly everything and still managed to purchase and control the storied Islanders franchise for more than 3 months. We look at his youth near Ashtabula, Ohio, where he played football with Urban Meyer. Spano was only 32 when he duped the Islanders and the NHL into selling him the team. John Valenti walks us through the fraud and the staggering lack of due diligence done on Spano's finances.
As his many and unbelievable excuses for his non-payment build, our guest, John Valenti, begins to investigate John Spano and quickly exposes Spano as a con artist. When the NHL finally removes him and federal investigators close in it takes Valenti to track down Spano when he skips town to the Caribbean. Valenti recalls the Newsday team's investigation, that he led, and its role in bringing down Spano and ultimately sending him to federal prison for fraud.

We're back from summer break for the 2nd half of Season 7! We're locked and loaded over the skies of Midway Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for the biggest and most consequential battle in US Naval history: the Battle of Midway. Fought by air and sea on June 4, 1942, the United States defeated Imperial Japan and turned the tide of World War II forever. We explore the key contribution by US Navy code breaker, Joe Rochefort, from Dayton, Ohio that lead to the American's successful ambush of the Japanese fleet.
We're joined by two excellent military historians: Trent Hone and Dr. Peter Mansoor, Colonel, US Army (Ret.). to discuss all things Midway. From Pearl Harbor to Doolittle's Raid, Col. Mansoor takes us through the US military's string of losses in the first six months of the Pacific War. Trent Hone, author of the upcoming book Mastering the Art of Command, about Admiral Chester Nimitz, explains the most analyzed naval battle in US history with aplomb and clarity. Buy Trent's new book here when it's released on September 15 by the US Naval Institute. https://www.usni.org/press/books/mastering-art-command
Both guests help us discovery the unsung hero of WWII, Joe Rochefort, naval officer and cryptanalyst that cracked the Japanese code and set up the American surprise attack at the Battle of Midway. We go through the intelligence and how Rochefort tricked the Japanese into giving away the time and place of their big attack. Rochefort, born in Dayton, Ohio, sadly did not receive the credit he deserved for decades following Midway.
Dr. Peter Mansoor, the General Raymond E.Mason Jr. Chair of Military History at the Ohio State University joins the show for the first time and discusses the battle in real time as the US sinks 4 Japanese aircraft carriers to turn the tide of the Pacific War. Trent Hone discusses the most consequential 15 minutes in American military history to that time. We also are joined by a previous guest, Beth Weinhardt, retired historian of the Westerville Public Library, from an interview about Rochefort's mentor, Agnes Mayer Driscoll. Driscoll, of Westerville, broke the early Japanese codes and taught Rochefort everything she knew about cryptography and played a role in the victory at Midway. Alex dives into the biggest medical experiment of the 20th Century: the development of the polio vaccines and the story of rivalry between its creators, Drs. Albert Sabin and Jonas Salk. A disease that was terrorizing parents all over the United States, the polio virus changed American medical history. We sit down with four amazing medical experts to discuss the polio crusade and its lessons for our current vaccine debates while analyzing the efforts of Dr. Albert Sabin from Cincinnati, Ohio and his oral polio vaccine that helps to nearly rid the world of this terrible virus.
Dr. Paul Offit joins the show to discuss the terror that was the polio epidemic in the first half of the 20th Century and how America ultimately took the experimental vaccines in overwhelming numbers. Offit, from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the FDA's Vaccine Advisory Board has written extensively on the polio virus. Dr. Offit's new book You Bet Your Life (2021) discusses how there's inherent and very real risk involved in all medical innovations in our history. Polio and COVID-19 are no exception. Paul discusses the "Cutter Incident" in 1955, which stopped the polio vaccination process and his thoughts on vaccine skepticism in modern times. Buy Dr. Offit's new book here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08S3DL19Y
