Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. In tonight's episode we are joined by our friends Wendy Koile, author of 4 fantastic books, and Sherry Spenzer, an author and historian with the Avon Lake Historical Society.
We discuss the mysterious 1932 death of Eva Volpe. The 21 year old Miss Volpe was a governess of an area family and was visiting her mother in Lorain when she disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Her body was soon found nearby at the base of a cliff on the shores of Lake Erie prompting an investigation that would soon unveil dark stories, rumors and conjecture about her death. Join us as we discuss this fascinating case that remains officially unresolved to this day.

The Wright Brothers found themselves involved in a number of lawsuits and the resulting negative publicity didnt help their attempts to sell their airplanes. Enter Max Morehouse. He conceived of an idea to fly some fabric from Dayton to Columbus as a public relations stunt. Find out what happens as Ohio would earn another aviation first!

In 1941, the US government fined a Dayton-area farmer for planting more wheat than was allowed per a new law hoping to stabilize a market that had wild fluctuations due to the war. Roscoe Filburn refused to pay the fine and filed a lawsuit instead, saying his wheat had nothing to do with the econmy - he grew it for his family and his livestock. The result of this battle had ramifications in all areas of American life for decades to come.

Mary Draper Ingles and her two children were kidnapped by Shawnee warriors in a raid on their Virginia home. They were marched to a Shawnee town in Ohio, where her children were given to Shawnee families passing through. Eventually, Mary managed to escape. This is the story of her 42-day, 600-mile run for home.

Ulysses S Grant, born and raised in Southwest Ohio's Georgetown, led the Union to victory in the Civil War and spent eight years as president. We combed his biographies and found a handful of fun and interesting things about his life - like the fact that his name wasn't really Ulysses S. Grant, and that the male side of his wedding party (including his best man) later had to surrender to him.

In 1944, a fire at the Ringling Brothers circus in Hartford, Connecticut became one of the worst tragedies in American history, killing at least 168 people and injuring 700 more. Investigators blamed a carelessly thrown cigarette for igniting the flame that took down the big top. But six years later, all eyes turned to Ohio when a Circleville man confessed to setting the fire as a 15-year-old roustabout with the circus. Was he telling the truth?
