15 years ago Disney released a documentary directed and written by Theodore Thomas that unveiled a relatively unexplored part of Disney history, at least in film form: when Walt and his colleagues were commissioned by the United States government to engage in a goodwill trip down to Latin and South America to forge positive relationships with their governments and peoples. Now, Thomas, as well as celebrated Disney authors Didier Ghez and JB Kaufman, have assembled to produce Walt Disney & El Grupo in Latin America, a new monograph from the Hyperion Historical Alliance, which offers a day-by-day telling of the experience with glorious photography, narrative accounts, and other details. On this episode of Notably Disney, host Brett Nachman invites in Ted Thomas, Didier Chez, and JB Kaufman to discuss the creation of this visually-stunning and very detailed account of the journey Walt and colleagues embarked on.

On May 25, 2024 the world lost a legendary songwriter emblematic of the term Disney Legend. Richard M. Sherman, who, with his brother Robert, wrote some of the most beloved songs of the 20th century and into the 21st century, too, passed away at the age of 95. It’s almost impossible to sum up Richard’s life and legacy in the span of a few sentences, or even over this conversation, though I want to create space to honor a man whose music and spirit will continue to illuminate our lives for generations to come. On this episode of Notably Disney, host Brett Nachman is joined by two individuals who knew, wrote about, and worked with Richard over the years. Author Jeff Kurtti is a celebrated Disney author who has written several dozen books about various facets of Disney. Central to this dialogue, he is the co-producer of The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story documentary and an editor on the Walt’s Time: From Before to Beyond book about the Sherman Brothers. Author Jim Fanning is an accomplished Disney author of many books, including the recent Drawing 100 Years of Disney Wonder, and has over the years crafted many articles, videos, and other pieces of writing about the Sherman Brothers’ work. Jeff and Jim share their memories of Richard Sherman, including some incredible anecdotes and facts that illustrate the songwriter's creativity and kindness.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year is Splash, the first release from Touchstone Pictures, the late film label from Disney as it aimed to create a space for more adult fare. Lee is the winner of two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Daytime Emmy Awards, and garnered 18 Emmy Award nominations total, plus two Grammy Award nominations. Lee’s work for television and film has spanned more than fifty years for productions including East of Eden, the Beauty and the Beast series from the 1980s, and Moonlighting. The 96th Academy Awards takes place on Sun, March 10, making now a perfect time to think about Disney’s role with the Oscars. Over the years many dozens of songs and scores have been nominated, and even a handful have won for their respective categories. Invariably, though, there have been some significant omissions, in terms of songs and scores that should have been nominated, along with songs that maybe should not have won or even been nominated in the first place. Of course, too, a few great songs missed the opportunity to win an Oscar, even if nominated. On this episode of Notably Disney, longtime guest and author Aaron Wallace returns to chat with host Brett Nachman about some takes of Disney songs and scores, and their connections (or lack thereof) to the Oscars.
