Greatly underrated and appreciated, Kitchens of Distinction were painted with a broad brush by critics at the time. Critics at the time pigeonholed the group as a "gay band" due to frontman Patrick Fitzgerald being publicly out at the time, and his lyrics that didn't shy from the subject matter. But the band was much more than that, and today we dive into the soaring, shimmering soundscapes and deep, haunting, poetic lyrics.

If you're a fan of guitar-driven rock music, the days of Hendrix, Page, and Halen are long gone. Nowadays, the guitar is rarely front-and-center - and if is, it's usually in the form of a reverb-drenched wall-of-sound or this week's latest grunge homage (don't get me wrong - I'm all in on the grunge revival!). But if you stumbled upon English psych rockers Wolf People and their 2016 record Ruins, you were treated to a collection of guitar riffs so beefy that I'd say guitarists Jack Sharp and Joe Hollick deserve a seat at the table amongst the greats of yesteryear. Truly a gem from the last decade, join us as we dive deep into the fuzz and fury of Wolf People.

Nowadays you can't throw a rock without hitting an indie record that blends sludge of grunge and jangle of alt rock with the fuzz and breathy vocals of shoegaze and dreampop. As niche as that may sound - it is the sound of indie right now. And while Ringo Deathstarr certainly wasn't the first, their 2015 record Pure Mood may well be the first to get it right. Drawing heavy inspiration from 90s grunge and alt metal, the Austin trio's nearly perfect shoegaze record brings new meaning to the wall of sound cliche, and crafts a sound that went on to dominate indie music a decade later.

Today we dive into their 2010 record Celeste, where The Soundcarriers mix in 60s/70s library music and avant pop with their psychedelic sound to create an album best enjoyed by tuning in and dropping out.

We take a break from the 90s and spend some time in this decade with a deep dive into a fantastic little indie record from 2021: Ovlov's Buds. Coming in at just under 25 minutes in length, this record is the perfect collection of short, poppy, indie rock gems that pack a punch. Soft vocals and melodies contrasted by moments of disorienting low end and cranked up fuzz a la J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. make this record stand out in the slew of bedroom pop, punk-leaning indie records. And as an added bonus: there's even an impromptu saxophone solo snuck in for good measure. Need I say more?

We chat about the short-lived and underrated indie band Majesty Crush. With lead singer David Stroughter's neurotic vocal delivery and a sound that didn't fit neatly within the lines of the 90s rock soundscape, Majesty Crush defied categorization in their brief but spectacular career. Their music is being celebrated in the release of Butterflies Don't Go Away, a compilation record featuring all tracks from their Love 15 debut record as well as their handful of EPs that followed. Join as we dive into one of the most underrated shoegaze acts of the 90s.

Eager to ditch the nu-metal label, Deftones headed into the studio with a goal to separate themselves from the pack on their second album Around the Fur. This ambition saw the group embrace their non-metal influences, leaning on the cerebral and ethereal qualities of bands like Depeche Mode. This combined with Chino Moreno's unusual vocals gave Around the Fur it's signature loud-soft dynamic, perhaps earning the band it's reputation as "the metal band it's okay for non-metal fans to like."

Look, we'll be the first ones to admit it: we listen to a lot of shoegaze and dream pop on this podcast. And you'll get plenty of that on this episode. But you'll also get children's songs written by a beloved 90s alt-rocker, an aggressive blues-harmonica, and some epic 70s jazz-fusion from a group of musicians that used to pal around with Miles Davis. Only on No Filler will you experience that level of musical whiplash! Tune in for our monthly mixtape episode for January.
