In the spring of 1942, a young French girl known only as ‘Veronique’ vanished from the streets of Soho. No-one knew her real name, where she came from, or how she had got there, but she had lived and worked as a prostitute for almost two years, and then having tried to escape, she vanished. Her disappearance is as much of a mystery as her life, or identity.
Unlike others episodes of Murder Mile, this was compiled over a decade from the reminiscences of those who knew her or knew of her, therefore not everything should be taken as fact. Memories are subjective, and over time, the accuracy fades, and details are shifted, rearranged or adapted to suit a bias or perspective, so all that remains is a mystery.

On Wednesday 21st of March 1984, 79-year-old Hilda Murrell of Shropshire was attacked in her own home by an unseen assailant. Double killer, David McKenzie had already been convicted of the murders of 76-year-old widow Barbara Pinder in 1984 in Battersea and 86-year-old widow Henrietta Osbourne in Chelsea, which had similar hallmarks. McKenzie had confessed to HIlda's murder and several others. But was he a serial killer?

This is Part One of Two.
On the Saturday the 27th of October 1984, 76-year-old widow Barbara Pinder was brutally murdered in her own flat on Prince of Wales Drive in Battersea by an unknown man with a lot of hatred for her. One year later, on Saturday 27th of October 1985, 86-year-old widow Henrietta Osbourne was also stabbed and attacked frenziedly in an attack which had similar hallmarks. It went unsolved for two years… then out of the blue, a petty burglar confessed to both murders. Evidence proved it was him, he confessed, he was convicted. But why did he confess, when he had got away with murder?

On Sunday 28th of March 2004 at 8.20pm, Police were called to either Room 701 or 703 at The Marriott Hotel at 134 George Street near Marble Arch, London, W1. Concerned for the guest, he was found naked, in the bath, in what looked like it could have been an accident or a suicide. It had all the hallmarks of a professional hit by experienced assassins of the Russian Mafia who were hired to whack-out a rival for the sake of money, revenge or respect. From the end of October to the start of December 2001, an unspecified two-roomed second-floor flat on Eagle Street in Holborn was a warm and welcoming guesthouse rented out to two Korean students exploring London. On the 8th or 9th of December 1913, William & Eliza, now in their late 60s or early 70s were curled up in front of the fire in their small lodging on New Compton Street in St Giles in Holborn, London. Their life had been an unbearable tragedy which had tested every ounce of their love and strength, and yet, one more punishment was yet to come for this couple who deserved to die a dignified death. Wednesday 10th of April 1940 at 10.15am, Alfred Scott, a surveyor for Bates & Co, an estate agents in Kilburn entered 21 Brondesbury Villas, to check that the premises was empty. Inside, he found that the first floor flat had been ransacked, two bags (a Gladstone and an attache case) had been searched for a specific item, and the tenant, 60-year-old Karoline Jones had been murdered. On Sunday 9th of May 2021 at 11:47am, 20-year-old Agnes Akom entered a shipping container on Everett Road in Powergate Business Park with 64-year-old Neculai Paizan, a cement mixer driver she had known for 18 months. CCTV cameras caught her walking in. but she never came out. So where did her body go? This episode explores the investigation by the Police which began as a missing persons, and ended in a brutal homicide.

This is Part Two of Two of ‘The Beast of Belvedere’ by Murder Mile UK True Crime.
From April 1983 to July 1984, a series of sadistic sex attacks were perpetrated on women and young girls on trains or near train stations on three routes from Central London to the South-East of England and Kent, they were the Bexleyheath Line, the North Kent Line and the Dartford Loop. This prolific serial rapist never disguised his face, he attacked in broad daylight, and he stuck to the areas he knew so well. But who was he?
