In 2016, Ben Young's disturbing Hounds of Love took the Venice International Film Festival by storm. This disturbing story of torture and extreme codependency won over critics while star Ashleigh Cummings secured the Fedeora Award for Best Actress. But while commending the film’s harrowing appeal, audiences noticed a striking similarity to the real crimes of David and Katherine Birnie.
Young has distanced himself from the true crime label, but does this film feel like an adaptation of a single story or pulled from a variety of horrific crimes?

In 2010, a Ukrainian orphan named Natalia Grace was adopted by Kristine and Michael Barnett. While projecting the image of a perfect family, they quickly noticed a pattern of strange behavior and began to believe that Natalia Grace was not a six year old orphan in need, but an adult con artist trying to cause their death.
Jenn walks Joe through the messy details of this disturbing case and the horrific truth behind the Barnetts’ salacious story.

In the mid to late 90s, serial killer John Bunting groomed teenager Jamie Vlassakis to commit multiple murders under the guise of protecting their Adelaide suburb from pedophiles and queer men. Director Justin Kurzel and screenwriter Shaun Grant adapt the horrifying true story of the "bodies in the barrels" in the 2011 film Snowtown, which is an incredibly difficult, but important, watch. C/W: animal abuse, sexual assault, and torture
Correction: Joe incorrectly states Adelaide is the capitol of Australia (it's actually Canberra)

Climb that tree because we're headed into croc infested waters with Andrew Traucki and David Nerlich's 2007 creature feature, Black Water. It's a low budget affair, but shot in such a savvy way that Jenn nearly loses it.
Plus: changes to Brett Mann's real life story, comparisons to Greg McLean's Rogue, crocs vs alligators (play the Jenn drinking game!), and the smartest $5K Joe has seen on screen.

In 2005, Greg McLean’s bleak horror film Wolf Creek made waves with its unflinching cruelty and disturbing violence. Adding to the terror is the film’s opening claims that this horrific story was based on actual events.
But how closely does McLean keep to this upsetting source material? Jenn walks Joe through the harrowing true stories of Bradley Murdoch and Ivan Milat, two notorious killers who preyed on backpackers exploring Australia’s vast wilderness.
Topics include: Parallels to iconic horror, depictions of Australian archetypes, and the disturbing origins of making “a head on a stick.”

Alfred Packer was no wilderness guide, or at least he wasn’t a talented one. This quirky prospector was known to be a petty thief and compulsive liar who shifted around from job to job. But in 1874, he convinced 5 men to follow him into the woods for what was supposed to be a seven-day trip. Months later, Packer emerged from the woods alone and strangely fit considering the lack of food.
In this episode, Jenn walks Joe through this strange story about the man now known as the Colorado Cannibal.

You may know the story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, but you’ve never seen it told so intimately and with so much harrowing heart as in J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow. Adapted from the book by Pablo Vierci, the film achieves terrifying accuracy with painstaking recreations, on-location filming, and a young cast of South American newcomers.
Jenn and Joe continue a month on Survival Cannibalism with this beautiful retelling. Bayona chronicles not just the 72 days members of the Old Christians Club Rugby Team spent stranded in the Andes, but brings us into their lives before and after the disaster.

Jenn and Joe begin covering Survival Cannibalism texts with Frank Marshall’s 1993 film Alive. Adapted from the book by Piers Paul Read, the film brings to life the 72 days survivors of the doomed Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 were stranded on a mountain high in the Andes.
This harrowing film has haunted us both since childhood, but how does Marshall handle the story’s darker moments and an inspirational trek out of the mountains?
Discussions include: a horrifying plane crash reenactment, changing the names of the dead, and catching up with the survivors twenty years later.
