In this episode, Jill and Linda are diving into the real benefits of self-care. The kind that gets you through those melty moments and helps you feel more like yourself again. The post-holiday chaos or the daily juggle of motherhood, we chat about why self-care is necessary.
Our 5 benefits are not one and done. In fact, we feel that we could have easily listed 50 benefits of self-care (which would have made a very LONG episode). Here's what you can hear about in this episode.
Energy Replenishment – How self-care helps you bounce back after big events (or big meltdowns).Building Better Neural Pathways – Small, intentional acts of care can shift your mindset in surprising ways.Less Eggshells – When you care for yourself, you’re less on edge (and so is everyone else).Understanding Yourself Better – Self-care reveals what truly fills your cup (and what doesn’t).Gentler Parenting – A little care for you leads to more patience and compassion for them. We’re all about making self-care realistic, imperfect, and sometimes even messy and we’d love to hear what self-care looks like for you. What benefits have you noticed in your life?

This week, Jill and Linda dive into the messy, often interrupted journey of building resilience as moms and how self-care plays a pivotal role. From car troubles to toddler birthday cake improvisations, we share the highs and lows of parenting and how embracing imperfection helps us grow stronger. Here’s what we unpack in this episode:
How self-care is not just about pampering but building the emotional and physical stamina to handle life's chaos.Sharing the realities of parenting wins and setbacks, including creative cake fixes and resting through sickness. How setting personal incentives can help us prioritize self-care amidst busy schedules, and why boundaries matter for moms and kids alike.Navigating tantrums, hunger-fueled emotions, and how meeting basic needs connects to emotional resilience.Balancing emotional expression with boundaries and learning to parent while reparenting ourselves.Resilience doesn’t mean avoiding emotions but learning to navigate them. The leading question in this episode is a slightly different take. We wonder what happens when we don't practice self-care. Most of us have been there, and Jill and Linda are no exception. While thinking about this question, we talk about several topics including:
How we are more likely to engage in distractions and unhealthy behaviours such as scrolling or eating too much ice cream. The energy and bandwidth suck when we don't practice self-care, and on the other side, the energy it can take sometimes to do self-care in the first place. How little things may aggravate you more than they normally do.The example we are setting for our kids when we don't practice self-care.How do our bodies tell us/show us?Sleep and routines, how they affect our attitudes and general outlook when it comes to self-care.We would love to hear from you. In this episode, we continue our discussion around the question - why is self-care so hard? This is part two, after episode one of last week, in which Jill and Linda found there was actually quite a lot to talk about when it comes to the hard side of self-care. Afterall, self-care isn't meant to be 'hard', is it? Hear all about topics such as:
Hard things in parallel with good things, such as allergies and encouragement and sleeplessness and arcade games.Constant interruptions and noise around us.Waiting for the 'right' time and for things to be perfect.Self-care bandwidth (or lack of)Social media making self-care look easier than it actually is and also only showing the self-care activity itself and not the logistics of making it happen and the 'hard' bits behind the scenes.Expectations. One word with big associations and big conversations.Regulation of emotions and feeling like me are insane and crazy.Talking ourselves into thinking that it is hard and feeling guilty if it doesn't happen. Is self-care really as hard as we make it out to be? We think both yes and no in answer to this question. What about you?

Why can self-care be so difficult to maintain? Should it really be this hard? Jill and Linda still wonder about these questions, even after 82 episodes of talking openly about these questions. Today's episode is no different, as we dive into the challenges and hard side of self-care. Take a listen as we chat about:
All the different things we need to do before we can do something. The self-talk about how hard it is and how much this can cause a delay.Freedom to get up and go do something for ourselves, the changes and shifts that happen as mothers in this regard and for our self-care.Competing priorities and needs. Especially when we are at the stage where we are feeling like it is hard to manage and need to get some self-care time.Making self-care second nature and more of a habit, rather than another thing to remember. We hope this conversation encourages you to remember that self-care isn't always easy and even small acts of self-care can make a big difference. We look forward to joining you for part two next week!

It's no joke. Motherhood is full of intense emotional moments. Not only for us, but also from our kids as well. Jill and Linda both have had a lot of practice when it comes to emotions and now talking about self-care adds a whole new level to the conversation. Listen in as we talk about:
What is 'too emotional'?The stereotypical labels that are placed on us, both from ourselves, others and society.Do we let our emotions determine the kind of self-care that we do? Or whether we do any at all?Do we need to be regulated to have effective self-care?Knowing that self-care is needed when we are too emotional or our kidsIs sleep your go to self-care when you are 'too emotional'?Different range of emotions - often we can only focus on the negative or bigger ones.Getting out of the funk.We would love to hear from you. Both Jill and Linda often refer to the concept of 'melty', which refers to the heightened emotional states following significant events or intense shifts in energy. In this episode, we're discussing the concept and unpacking it a bit further as we chat about:
Personal stories and recent experiences with memorable family outings and unexpected challenges. What it means to be ‘melty’ and why it's so common during transitions.Practical self-care tips for new mums to manage emotional ups and downs. The importance of noticing and accepting ‘melty’ moments to stay balanced. We would love to hear from you. Jill feels like she's spent an entire day yelling back and forth because of blocked ears, sickness and more and Linda has spent an hour with two kids scrambling around the car while waiting for an appointment. Far from the picture of loving yourself as self-care that we are talking about in this episode. Yet, after sharing our highs and lows, we dive in and think about what loving ourselves actually looks like. What it actually means. We chat about things such as:
The age-old saying of self-care isn't selfish and often we need to put ourselves first.Mothering (and loving) the mother and taking care of ourselves too.Acceptance. Recognising where you are and what season you are in. Whether it be sickness, being overwhelmed, or chucking your weekly plans in the bin.Expectations of ourselves and our self-care.We would love to hear from you. If you Google the word "support," there's a description that says something like a thing that bears the weight of something or keeps it upright. Regarding supportive self-care, how can we practice self-care without bearing all the weight and still stay upright in the process? These are hard questions to ponder as Jill and Linda dive into another discussion and talk about:
Practical ways in which we support ourselves and others, such as cooking a meal for someone, offering to look after an extra kid or two, and cleaning out a car.The nuances that are unsaid and unwritten when it comes to supportive self-care.How hard it can be to accept help, especially when we are sick or tired or unsure if we are a burden.Spending time alone to support ourselves and others, when its quicker and easier to get things done rather than having extra company alongside.Checking in to our immediate reactions to events or when self-care is mucked up and doesn't go as planned.Continuing to have conversations and feel seen and understood. We would love to hear from you. Hands up if you have faced the challenges of being sick as a parent? Extra hands up if you also struggle to fit in self-care when managing your health at the same time. Today Jill and Linda have thrown a spanner in the works and changed the episode title right on the line. Based on first hand experience, today's episode is talking about self-care when you're sick. Listen in as we talk about:
What support looks like when you're sick and the importance of accepting help.Permission to drop the ball and rest. A reminder that we all need at times.Passing sickness around. How to navigate that and our own conflicts when it comes to self-care.Unsaid, unwritten and understood self-care of ourselves when we are sick.If you are sick when listening to this, please know that you are not alone. How do we incorporate self-care into our busy lives? It’s a question that mamas across the world possibly ask countless times every day. Jill and Linda are making time today to have this conversation as they touch on their personal journeys and what they have learnt along the way. Tune in to hear about:
Is self-care easier to plan on the calendar or leave white space available for it?Saying yes to self-care can sometimes mean saying no to other things.Sometimes, we think self-care takes longer than it does. The time we spend thinking about self-care compared to doing it can be significant, and it requires some honest examination.Motivation? Does this matter?Life demands always seem to be more important.Mothers' needs (self-care) often take a backseat to others. We continue to learn and do our best, especially when making time for self-care. As Linda approaches another school holidays and Jill is just off the back of one, today we are talking all about self-care activities at home. In the 75 episodes so far, we’ve realised that self-care at home has changed for both of us, which makes for an interesting conversation as we talk about:
Guilt and priorities when it comes to house maintenance and chores and the distractions that can prevent us from getting true self-care moments.Doing self-care alongside our kids. What that looks like in reality, especially if our kids are sick.Being mindful of what we can accept and involve as self-care when it’s harder at home with everything else around us.Mapping out our days and planning for spontaneity or when things get really mucked upMusic! How it adds an extra layer of enjoyment at home alongside other activities. We continue to learn and do our best and we would love you to join the conversations and email us at [email protected] with any questions, suggestions, or comments from this episode.

Each episode Jill and Linda start the conversation by sharing recent highs and lows that are currently happening all around them. Why do we do this? To appreciate, acknowledge and understand that there are several aspects to self-care and parenting and life is 'real' in the fact that we can't just focus on one particular area. There are times when we are left unsatisfied that we didn't get the outcome we were hoping for. On the flipside, even if it doesn't work out the way we were hoping, there are still moments of joy and appreciation that things are working out differently. Listen in as we chat about the highs and lows and talk about:
Starting the school year strong, even with mishaps along the way. When each time we sit down there is something being destroyed, destructed, ripped up, torn down and how we can turn that around. How in each bad day there can be good moments. It is important to talk it out and have support when we are stuck in lows and celebrating highs. The reality of mucked-up motherhood and self-care.We continue to learn and do our best and we would love you to join the conversations and email us at [email protected] with any questions, suggestions, or comments from this episode.

Do you feel comfortable getting told you are a good Mum/Mom? Yes, we’re going with both versions today being that we are connecting across the globe for this conversation. Often we can get told one thing and think another, and parenting is no different. Jill and Linda think about what this phrase means for both of them as the conversation takes on a form of its own. Included inside this episode, we talk about:
When you’re crazy, stressed and ready to pack it all in and feel the need to defend yourself when someone says ‘you’re doing great!’Getting kids into the car is a marathon in itself. The old saying ‘you’re going to miss these days’ when we have next to no energy and have so much happening around us.Does consistent self-care make you a good mum? Is it even possible?Superhero images and comparisons we make. Self-care has become quite a buzz word these days and we are often led to believe that self-care can cure burn out, depression, anxiety, and other effects of living in a society built on imperialism. The narrative suggests that these issues can be easily solved by finding the perfect self-care routine or just setting better boundaries (another form of "self-care"). However, this oversimplifies the root causes of such problems and shifts the blame onto individuals rather than addressing systemic issues. Jill and Linda are discussing the narratives we often hear surrounding self-care in this episode and talk about:
That there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to the meaning of self-care.Our interpretations and perspectives of self-care.Blaming ourselves when self-care gets mucked up and how we compare ourselves to others.Should we be putting the onus for change entirely on us?Switching something out for self-care.We are excited that the narrative of self-care has expanded and will continue to have conversations surrounding self-care and what it looks like for us.

For today's episode, Jill and Linda are celebrating Self-Care for Lazy Moms Day which is celebrated on September 6th!
We ask the serious questions and laugh a little at how we've possibly 'almost' forgotten what laziness looks like. Listen in as we talk about:
Have you forgotten how to be lazy as a mama?Is self-care a form of laziness?Sleep. The Achilles heel of many mothers and lack of it is certainly apparent! What would a lazy day look like for you? We would genuinely love to know!
