Anxiety - it's tough to define it.
It can mean so many different things to so many people. It can be debilitating, or it can be a minor inconvenience. But one thing's clear. However we experience anxiety, it's not a positive feeling!
This year's theme for Mental Health Awareness Week is anxiety so, for this solo episode, I share my experiences, tips and thoughts on anxiety and explain why 'awareness' simply isn't enough when it comes to mental health in 2023.

Opening up - it's one thing we've all struggled with. Not only that, it's a struggle particularly associated by men.
One man on a mission to change that is Matt O'Neill, my guest on Modern Men this week.
Matt is the host of an incredible mental health podcast, Make Time to Talk, which I featured on in March. On this episode, he talks about his early mental health experiences, why taking time for yourself is more than OK and what made him want to start his podcast.
I've kept in touch with Matt on a weekly basis since we first met and it's a pleasure to be sharing our rather similar journeys into the mental health space. I wish Matt and his podcast the absolute best!

Ask yourself this... are you being your truest self?
If you shy away from pursuing certain interests, wearing certain clothes or embracing certain lifestyle choices due to your masculinity, this one's for you.
On this solo episode of Modern Men, I explore how men can embrace individuality and self-expression. I dive into my own experiences of true self-expression and how accepting a truer version of your self can lead to greater happiness, stronger relationship and clearer work goals.

*TRIGGER WARNING - This episode features detailed discussions around schizoaffective disorder, psychosis and sectioning under the Mental Health Act*
The NHS reports that, between 2021 and 2022, there were a staggering 53,337 new detentions under the Mental Health Act.
For those who haven't experienced being sectioned, it's difficult to imagine.
On this episode of Modern Men, I speak to James Lindsay about his experiences with schizoaffective disorder and psychosis. James is a mental health advocate, author of the brand new book 'Befriending My Brain', out on 2nd March 2022, and Senior Marketing & Wellbeing Access Officer at Hertfordshire Mind Network.
James explores what led to his first experiences of psychosis and how it culminated in his sectioning. Plus, he takes us back to his school days, how anxiety affected him and how being a man made things harder.

We all have different views on masculinity but, in this space, we all agree it needs a revamp. This guest has taken his views to the TEDx stage and explained why traditional masculinity and its power in society is nothing short of a crisis.
On episode 5 of Modern Men, I am joined by Lewis Wedlock, an activist, academic and social psychologist based in Bristol, England.
We discuss his background in the industry, why masculinity is important to him and the story behind his TEDx talk on the subject. Plus, Lewis shares why he started his podcast, Mendable, and delves into how he became one of the UK's youngest lecturers.

Because of how society puts men in boxes, they often feel shame when they can't live up to the expectations of what it means to be a "real man".
On episode 4 of Modern Men, I am delighted to be joined by podcaster, author, therapist and coach Alex Holmes.
We discuss what first made Alex become vocal about mental health and masculinity, the problem of male shame and dealing with the expectations society places on men.
Plus, Alex explains the story behind his podcast, The Mindful Man, and book, Time to Talk and provides one powerful tip for modern men.
Alex's content, his podcast and his book helped me find out so much more about male mental health and masculinity when I began to explore the topic more during the first COVID lockdown in 2020, so it was only right that things came full circle and I sat down with him for a conversation.

*TRIGGER WARNING - This episode features a mention of suicide*
Many men find themselves shying away from showing emotion for fear of being seen as weak or inadequate.
But, in fact, there’s a clear strength in finding that ability to open up, admit your struggles and embrace the power of talking.
On episode 3 of Modern Men, I speak to author, poet and mental health advocate Daragh Fleming. We discuss what pushed Daragh to be open about mental health, the importance of talking and how perceptions of masculinity and “male” emotions are changing.
Plus, Daragh explains the journey behind his incredible book Lonely Boy (linked below), why we should aim to build emotional male friendships and he provides his two superb tips for modern men.
