Freedom fund, f*** off fund, no matter what you want to call it, we all need an escape plan from a bad job, bad relationship, or just bad situation that involves having a stack of cash in the bank in case we need to leave. I discussed this and more with Paulette Perhach, who coined the term "f*** off fund" in an article she wrote which subsequently went viral. Paulette is also an author of Welcome to the Writer's Life and continues to write articles for publications like the New York Times, Elle, Cosmopolitan and McSweeney's. She also helped me craft my book proposal which landed me a book deal, so Paulette will always be someone I'm so thankful came into my life!

This was such a special episode to record. I've been talking with Brian Rump online over email and DMs for years as he's been a longtime podcast listener. When I did a call out in 2023 for money stories I could feature in my book Everything but Money, he volunteered and his story ended up being one that impacted readers the most. When my book came out and I sent him a copy, he asked if he could step out from the anonymous name I gave him, come on the podcast, and share the rest of his story including his healing journey and how he went from banker and economics and finance teacher at Fleming College to business coach and certified consulting hypnotist to help people with their own money stories.

Life can be unexpected, but no matter what, it's important to be prepared in case the unexpected happens. That was one of the key messages Keisha Blair shared with me in our podcast interview and her award-winning book Holistic Wealth. Soon after giving birth to her second child, her husband fell ill and within the span of 24 hours, Keisha became a widow and single mom to two young children. This experience not only shaped the rest of Keisha's life but inspired her to share the financial lessons she learned from it, to help others build resiliency no matter what life throws at you.

Is your money story holding you back? And are there other forces at play preventing you from achieving a sense of financial well-being and peace? I know so as does my guest Shannah Game, a Certified Financial Planner, Certified Trauma of Money Specialist, host of the Everyone's Talking Money podcast, and author of the new book Unraveling Your Relationship with Money. To celebrate the release of my bestselling book "Everything but Money: The Hidden Barriers Between You and Financial Freedom," I hit the road to do a cross-Canada book tour, with my first stop taking place in Toronto on Jan. 31, and yes, I recorded it so you could be right there with me! A huge thank you to my co-host and MC Melissa Leong who was absolutely incredible. Make sure to grab a copy of her book "Happy Go Money" or listen to my interview with her on episode 181. Another big thank you to BMO ETFs for supporting my book launch and sponsoring my entire book tour. Without them, this tour wouldn't be possible. And finally thank you to everyone who has bought a copy of my book, borrowed it from the library, and given it a rating or review online!

If you liked the episode where I interviewed my maternal grandpa, then you'll love this episode where I interview my paternal grandma! Audrey Moorhouse immigrated from Scotland to Canada with her husband in her 20s when my dad was about 3 years old. She had a rough childhood to say the least being brought up in foster care, but through all of her struggles, she was able to build a beautiful life for herself in British Columbia, and show me, her granddaughter, just how resilient us Moorhouses are. If only I grew up wealthy, like Richie Rich, then all my problems would melt away. That's what I initially thought as a child and something I explore in my book "Everything but Money," but as it turns out, more money does in fact lead to more problems. Or if not more problems, different ones. To explore this topic further, I want to re-listen to the episode I did with Kristin Keffeler, a family wealth advisor and author of The Myth of the Silver Spoon. In this episode, she shares real-life stories and data to show that growing up with money doesn't necessarily lead to a life free of financial issues and abundant with peace and happiness. After all, money doesn't solve everything.

What does human behaviour have to do with whether we are a good or bad investor? A lot! Which is why I was so pleased to have Dr. Daniel Crosby come on the show to share his insight on the podcast. Not only is he a behavioural finance expert, he's also written five books on the topic including The Behavioral Investor which we discuss in this episode.

Tiffany is hands-down the Queen of Budgeting and the proof is in the numbers. Since she transitioned from teacher (with a Master's Degree in Education no less) to financial expert and educator, she has helped millions of women get good with money. No wonder her book Get Good with Money became a New York Times Bestseller and her interview with me on how to transform your financial life, no matter what kind of mistakes you've made in the past, is one of my most popular episodes to date. This episode originally aired on June 9, 2021.

When I'm asked who my favourite personal finance author is, my answer is always the same: Andrew Hallam. His book Millionaire Teacher changed my life and the way I thought about money. But it was his second book, Balance, that cemented him as my all-time favourite. In this interview about this book, we discuss the connection between money and happiness, how to live a financially healthier life, and ultimately why balance, not money, is the goal and why we need to never lose sight of that. I'm so glad I started this podcast back in 2015 because it gave me the perfect opportunity to get a recording of my maternal grandpa, Jacques Hardy, before he passed away a few years later. And it's because of this recording I was able to more accurately share his financial journey in my book "Everything but Money." To say my grandpa came from humble beginnings is an understatement. Throughout childhood, scarcity was common place, but he was able to find a way out, get married, and make sure his children never had to experience going without like he did. He's always had such an optimistic nature, I think that must helped him along the way. I feel so lucky to share his story with you. This episode originally aired on December 1, 2015.

One person I’ve always looked up to when it came to writing is my friend Cait Flanders. We’ve been friends for going on 10+ years now, getting to know each other when we were both just personal finance bloggers, but funnily enough we’ve never lived in the same city at the same time. Cait has always had such a way with words, which is why it was no surprise that her book The Year of Less is still a bestseller 7 years after it was published. It’s an incredible memoir about her upbringing, her personal and financial evolution, and of course her shopping ban story that went viral in the media. Here’s my interview with her when her book first came out which first aired on February 14, 2018.

People sure have a lot to say about how you spend your money. The funny thing is, those people don't know you as well as you know yourself. So why would you listen to their advice or opinions, when the real person you should be listening to is yourself? This notion is what inspired Jen Smith and Jill Sirianni, co-hosts of The Frugal Friends Podcast, to write their book Buy What You Love Without Going Broke: Transform Your Spending and Get More of What Money Can't Buy. They wanted to help people transform their spending by cutting out the noise so they could finally start listening to their own needs, wants, and values so they can feel empowered, not shamed, for how they spend their money. You may remember Jen and Jill from episode 351 where they shared their stories of getting out of debt and finding freedom through frugality. If you liked that episode, you'll love this one and their new book!

What sets us apart from the best investors in the world, like Sir John Templeton, Jack Bogle, Ed Thorp, and Howard Marks? What hidden talents do they have that made them millionaires or billionaires? And what lessons can we take away from their journeys that can help us become better investors too? William Green, financial journalist and author of Richer, Wiser, Happier: How the World's Greatest Investors Win in Markets and Life, joins me on the podcast to share what he was able to glean from interviewing these major players in the financial industry. He also breaks down what we can learn from their successes and failures, including the fact that money isn't everything.
