In November of 2024, residents of New Jersey began reporting a high velocity of unknown objects brazenly moving in-plain-sight and low-to-the-ground through the sky overhead. From changing shape and possessing incredible speed, to being oft-times accompanied by orbs, UFOs, and black helicopters, suspicions began to mount quickly that the so called ‘drones’ were not as they seemed. On the last Saturday of October, just as the veil between worlds is sheer enough to allow passage of all manner of otherworldly travelers, something special takes place in Meade County, Kentucky.
A celebration of the life and commemoration of the death of Leah Smock, The Battletown Witch, the only woman that history tells us was burned alive in America for the crime of Witchcraft- and it happened here- in The Bluegrass State.
In 2022, we were honored to speak at the inaugural Battletown Witch festival. Tonight, you’ll hear that presentation in full, as we discuss just a few instances of those, and that, which have been called Witches in and around Kentucky. Additionally, we take a few questions from the audience, and festival organizer Annie Hamilton Edmond tells us the story of Leah Smock- The Battletown Witch- and talks briefly on the UFOlogical history of the area.
While MIK were unable to attend the festival this year, we send our best to both organizers and and festival goers and can’t wait to join you again in 2024. Since the inception of the comic book medium, aliens, monsters, and extra-dimensional entities have always been stars of the color soaked page. This commitment of ethereal to panel, a pop culture reiteration of otherworldly phenomena continually finding a prominent place in the folklore of various cultures since the dawn of human history. Tonight on Midnight in Kentucky, we speak with comic aficionado and owner of the Bluegrass state’s largest comic book store, Jason Stephens, as well as folklorist and editor of Kentucky Folklife Digital Magazine, Delainey Bowers- who together host the podcast Comic Virgin. When not immersed in graphic novels, however, Delainey and Jason have also embarked on several investigations of the supernatural, paranormal, and out-and-out weird over the years. In this episode we discuss the through line between comics, folklore, and the phenomena at large, a few of Delainey and Jason’s more profound encounters with the unexplained, the ontological nature of the phenomena itself, and much more.
