However, in this week's episode, we dive into a powerful tool that can captivate even the most reluctant readers: teacher book talks.

Think of teacher book talks as the trailers of the literary world. In this episode,

We explore the essential steps of a successful teacher book talkWe discuss the importance of choosing the right book, starting with one you genuinely love and understand wellHow book talks provide that sense of anticipation by giving students a sneak peek into the captivating worlds of literature

  • Centers, also known as learning stations, offer a structured approach to self-directed learning activities in the classroom. In today’s episode, Rachel from Uniquely Upper highlights several benefits of incorporating centers, with one key advantage being the ability to provide differentiated instruction for all students. In a classroom with diverse learning styles, abilities, and interests, centers allow teachers to accommodate these differences effectively. Centers promote active engagement, independence, and social interaction, which fosters confidence, cooperation, and collaboration among students.

While traditionally seen as an elementary strategy, Rachel and I discuss how using centers in secondary ELA has the potential to individualize learning to meet the unique needs of today’s students. By providing practice for specific skills through centers, teachers can better address student needs and fill in their learning gaps.

In this episode on incorporating centers in secondary ELA, Rachel highlights:

Centers provide a fun and engaging way for students to learn - getting students out of their seats and learning in a different way. Centers allow teachers to differentiate tasks to meet individual needs. Students can be working on different tasks (or different levels) at the same time making better use of class time and keeping all students engaged. How to get started with centers with your class.

Get to Know Rachel from Uniquely Upper

Rachel is a busy mom of four who works full-time on creating grammar resources and providing teaching tips to help busy teachers. She taught for over 10 years before stepping out of the classroom full-time. She spent 2 of those years as an ELA interventionist for upper elementary, where she worked with students and teachers to bridge learning gaps.

Rachel's passion for teaching grammar began when she recognized her students' struggles with skill mastery early on in her teaching career. Year after year, students seem to struggle with grasping the many skills within the grammar realm. This passion was amped up when her daughter (10th grade at the time) expressed concern about not knowing how to identify the various parts of speech. She recognizes the importance of bringing change that helps teachers and students. Through her resources and tips, Rachel hopes to bridge the gap between learning and time.

  • In today’s episode, I’m sharing with you my reflections on this past school year. I share both the positive things I implemented that I’ll be keeping and a few areas where I want to make some changes. It is important to take some time at the end of the school year to reflect on the past year as it allows me to ponder the ideas over the summer and be ready to make adjustments in the fall.

In this episode, I share my reflection from this past school year:

Reflecting on the year before summer break is crucial for making necessary changes. The focus for the upcoming year is to tighten expectations and consequences for students.Individualizing instruction through small groups and centers is essential due to varying abilities and learning gaps.Choice boards will be implemented to give students autonomy in their learning and promote ownership.Incorporating spiral review warm-ups and using folders for organization have proven successful strategies.

  • In this episode, I share the idea of productive struggle and its significance in education. Productive struggle is all about allowing students to tackle challenging tasks with limited adult intervention, enabling them to develop problem-solving skills, build confidence, and cultivate critical thinking abilities. Throughout the episode, I highlight the common tendency for both new and veteran teachers to provide answers too quickly, teaching them that if they wait long enough they don’t have to do the work.

I discuss the importance of embracing productive struggle to improve student outcomes. As educators, it is crucial to reflect on our teaching practices and resist the urge to rescue students too quickly. Instead, we must cultivate an environment that values effort, provides specific feedback, and encourages a growth mindset. Through productive struggle, we empower students to overcome challenges, become active participants in their learning journey, and develop a lifelong love for learning.

In this episode about productive struggle, I share:

Productive struggle allows students to develop problem-solving skills, build confidence, and think deeply about tasks.Teachers should avoid jumping in too quickly to provide answers and instead guide students through questioning and partial support.Students need to understand that failure is part of the learning process and that they need to practice and work through difficulties.Specific feedback, not providing answers, helps students assess and improve their strategies and understanding.Celebrating effort, encouraging a growth mindset, and creating a safe environment for making mistakes are crucial for promoting productive struggle.

  • In this episode, I explore the importance of teaching students how to reflect on their learning and the impact it can have on their educational journey. By encouraging students to reflect, we shift their mindset from viewing education as something that happens to them to realizing that they have control over their learning. Reflection helps students understand how they learn, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and set more specific goals. It fosters a growth mindset and improves the retention of information.

In this episode about student reflections, I share:

Teaching students to reflect helps students see they have control of their educationReflection promotes self-awareness, goal setting, and the ability to ask better questions for targeted support.Incorporating reflection enhances the retention of information and fosters a growth mindset in students.I provide practical strategies for implementing reflection in the classroom.

I also share how I introduce the concept of student reflection by modeling reflection questions and gradually integrating them into daily activities and until they become a natural part of our everyday conversations. By making reflection a regular part of the learning process, students become active participants in their education.
