  • In this fantastic episode, I spoke with my friend Dr. Shelly Johnson about an incredibly interesting topic: the philosophy of play.

    Shelly Johnson is a philosophy professor at Georgetown College. She teaches and researches on ethics, philosophy of education, environmental ethics, and philosophy of play. She is the author of the blog Love is Stronger and the books Argument Builder, Discovery of Deduction (co-author) and Everyday Debate Before returning to graduate school, she was a middle and high school humanities teacher for over a decade. She earned her PhD in philosophy at the University of Kentucky and wrote her dissertation on education and the good society. In her free time, she enjoys walking, hiking, juggling, and hula hooping.

    Shelly teaches a course called The Philosophy of Play and in this episode, she shares some of the important aspects of play that I think many if not most of us take for granted.

    This topic is so aligned with the non-diet and Intuitive Eating approach because it reminds us of the importance of joyful movement.

  • Intuitive Eating is about listening to your body and eating in a way that provides nourishment, feels good, and brings you enjoyment. The focus is not on changing the size or appearance of your body. In fact, the first principle “reject the diet mentality” places a strong emphasis on putting weight loss and size and shape goals at least on the back burner if not tossing them out permanently.

    This principle applies to movement as well.

    But what if we like to train hard, push ourselves, leave it all on the gym floor, or have sport-specific performance goals? What if we like to see measurable improvement in our strength? What if we enjoy running and like to see our 10K time improve as a result of our training?

    In the episode, I address an important and common question. Is a structured, disciplined, and maybe even for some somewhat of a “hardcore” approach to training at odds with Intuitive Eating?

  • In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking with my friend and fellow nutritionist, Rebecca Heald about her transition from focusing specifically on helping people resolve issues around their relationship with food to her work now coaching business leaders. She is championing and implementing fearless workplace well-being, one bold step at a time.

    We spoke about how this was a natural transition because as humans, it's difficult to compartmentalize different aspects of our lives. Our relationship with food ties into how we operate in every area of our lives including business, family, friendships, and more. And, of course, those other areas have a profound impact on our relationship with food as well.

  • “The first step is admitting you have a problem.”

    Someone asked a great question about getting a spouse or other loved one to help support you on your non-diet journey when that person not only views health through a weight-centric lens but their particular views and behaviors also point to potential mental health issues.

  • In this episode, we're talking about our role in supporting a healthy relationship with food and body in our children and to do that, I brought on Oona Hanson, a true expert in this area.

    Oona Hanson helps parents and guardians raise kids who have a healthy relationship with food and their body. In addition to her private practice as a parent coach, Oona also works as a Family Mentor at Equip, an eating disorder treatment program. Oona holds a Master's Degree in Educational Psychology and a Master's Degree in English. Her work has been featured widely, including on CNN, USA Today, Good Morning America, US News & World Report, Today, and People.

    This is a great episode for everyone but in particular, I wanted to reach dads and help them understand their important role in nurturing this important aspect of the health of their children and families.

  • Cannabis or marijuana use is nothing new in our country but more and more states have begun legalizing its sale and use not just for medicinal purposes, but also, for recreational use. As a result, it’s much more common for people to be more open about the fact that they are regular users of cannabis.

    In this episode, I have a great and informative conversation with a registered dietitian Leah Kern who is a cannabis user herself and also works with a number of clients who use cannabis regularly. As a non-diet, Intuitive Eating dietitian, she shares some excellent insight and advice about how to navigate eating while high since cannabis can have a significant impact on appetite, cravings, and the enjoyment of food.

  • An extremely common question that comes up in my work with men and young people (women too, for that matter) relates to “bulking up” or increasing muscle mass. The fancy scientific term is muscle hypertrophy.

    Maybe you have decided that you want or need to bulk up or have an adolescent child who has expressed an interest in this goal. If you/they search for recommendations on Google, you’ll inevitably encounter advice that firmly grounds you in diet culture. It’s typically a combination of structured training and rigid or at least quite specific dietary advice.

    Is this healthy, not just physically but emotionally and psychologically as well? These are important questions and addressing and thinking through them early on in the process can prevent so many of the issues that we see pop up over time including problems with body image and relationship with food.

    In this episode, I address the topic of interest in intentionally trying to put on muscle mass/muscularity in the context of the principles of Intuitive Eating, weight-neutral health, and an environment that promotes a healthy body image.

  • Just about every conversation involving health discussions these days seems to revolve around, or at least eventually touch on the topic of “processed” food.

    I’m trying to cut out processed food. I’m trying to eat less processed food. I’m trying to eat more “real” food. You should cut out … and on and on.

    But, I would submit to you that not only is processed food not inherently “bad” but in many cases, it’s actually the HEALTHY option.

  • In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking with Vanessa Preston about trauma and its impact on various aspects of our lives including our relationship with food.

    Vanessa is a Mental Health Social Worker, Psychotherapist, and Nutritionist in Australia (originally from Kentucky). She has provided assessment and therapy services for 14 years and specializes in treating posttraumatic stress disorder and complex trauma. Vanessa is the Body and Food Freedom Program creator and the host of the Body and Food Freedom Podcast where she supports women to make peace with food and their bodies. Vanessa’s group program focuses on self-compassion, shame resiliency, body image healing, and intuitive eating.

    Some of the topics we discussed include:

    Vanessa provides a fantastic description of what trauma is and how it impacts us in a variety of ways including our relationship with food. How men are often less inclined to express hurts and emotional struggles and how this can impact our eating habits and behaviors even when the traumatic experience has nothing to do with food directly. How dieting negatively impacts those who are trying to work through their trauma. How non-diet approaches like Intuitive Eating address the needs of those who are recovering from trauma.

  • It’s so easy to fall into a way of thinking where we see only one way to work through a challenging situation. This is especially true in diet culture. The carnivore diet says to eat nothing but animal-based products. Many macro and calorie counters (especially many influencers we see on SM) think tracking is the best way to address your food-related problems … stick to your calorie target … easy, right?

    However, we even see this within non-diet approaches like IE. While most coaches and counselors are careful to avoid this, it’s easy to find ourselves gravitating toward our favorite go-to approach for addressing a particular eating or body image difficulty.

  • While scrolling IG, I saw an ad I’d never seen before. It was two people wearing full-body suits that looked like something out of a sci-fi movie and the tagline on the image said, “Precise measurements for real results!” I have to say that I would have LOVED this 10 years ago to compliment MyFitness Pal (for tracking macros), Happy Scale (for tracking DAILY body weight measurements), my training logs, my countless progress photos, and it would have basically replaced my electronic tape measure. One more data-generating piece of tech to help me obsess even more about every little change in my body shape and size.

    In this episode, I talk about this piece of tech and how this and other ways that we engage in body-checking could be harmful.
