Introduction
Welcome to the Bougie Black Therapists Podcast where we give licensed clinicians permission to be bold, be authentic, competent, and true to themselves while in private practice.
In today’s Bougie Episode, we discuss the topic of cultivating a private practice as a Black therapist with Montoyia McGowan and guest Dr. NaRicia Futrell, two of the top Black therapists in the field.
Therapy is becoming something more people of color want to invest in; however it's challenging to find someone that people of color can relate to. 80% of the therapeutic process is dependent upon how comfortable the client feels around the therapist. The remaining 20% is what was taught in school.
“Therapist Statistics & Facts: How Many are There in 2022?”, Zauderer, Steven, November 13, 2022, https://www.crossrivertherapy.com/.
Topics:
Representation in Psychotherapy
Time Management
Agency vs. Private Practice
Sharing Personal Experiences with Clients
Setting Boundaries as a Therapist
Self-Care Practices
Exchange of Energy
Brainspotting
Conclusion:
Some therapists choose not to share their personal experiences during sessions, while others may share their perspective with a client on what a more healed version of them could possibly look like. There is no set way to help clients figure out life blueprints work for them but being human during sessions allows a healthy exchange of energy that helps clients of color relate to therapists of color in a beneficial way.

Introduction
Are you somewhere in the grieving process after the loss of a relationship, loved one, friendship, or perhaps a job? Feeling like you’re never going to get your mojo back? In this Episode of The Bougie Black Therapist Podcast, Guest Tammy Groves Thornton joins the conversation to discuss how art can speed up the healing process after heartache.
A recent study indicated there was a 71% decrease in feelings of anxiety and 73% decrease in feelings of depression for evaluated art participants. Stopping the Chase helps clients who struggle with depression and anxiety understand that these issues are caused by a disconnect between the body and the brain because the brain can go forward, backward, and present, but our bodies can only do one. When there's a disconnect between our thoughts and our feelings, it can throw us into a state of turmoil on a regular basis.
Topics
Definition of Depression
Definition of Anxiety
Art Can Help with Depression and Anxiety
Art Can Help People Reconnect with Joy
Art Can Help When Dealing with Matters of the Heart
Art is Healing and Healing is a Process
Sometimes Painful Experiences are Necessary to the Healing Process
Start Off Small and Make Time for Creativity
Conclusion
The process of creating connects us to what is divine in us. It is a special connection we have to The Creator because The Creator created us. Our thoughts are energy, and energy never dies, so it’s important that we give our thoughts a place to go to keep them from ruminating and getting stuck in the vibration of us. Art is an excellent way to heal and give our thoughts energy.

Brief summary of episode: In this episode, Courtney Settle joins the conversation to discuss The Season of Loneliness and Finding Ways to Work Through the Loneliness of The Wintertime Blues.
Some people have difficulty acknowledging loneliness because they think they are perceived as weak or unable to get their needs met. We are human and therefore wired for connection with others. After living through a period of social distancing recently, many people found themselves feeling more alone than ever.
Loneliness effects on health: Loneliness kills. It cultivates depression and can lead to health issues and premature death. Studies suggest there is an association between loneliness and cardiovascular disease and mortality.

ORIGINAL WAYS TO WORK THROUGH LONLINESS BEFORE I STRIPPED THEM DOWN:
Be proactive and intentional about your connections Make it a point to check in with friends. Loneliness happens over a period and can creep up on us, especially with the holidays approaching.
Avoid Desperation Energy: It's ok to desire a relationship, just don't allow a Season or to dictate decisions you make.
Make Plan to Make Plans: Make plans and invite people out. Initiate contact sometimes.
Take a Chance: Everybody wants to be chased, but nobody wants to be the chaser. Have the courage to reach out and let someone know you are available and/or interested in them.
Create a routine for yourself: Consider joining a gym, church or other meet up groups that meet or involve regular activities.
Create an anchor in connection: Create a connection where you talk to someone every on a certain day of the week.
Learn how to be in the present moment: Allow yourself to be in a funk when you realize you're in a funk. The feelings should be able to move through you.
