  • From humble beginnings, Sandra Johnson sees education as the pathway out of adversity. With a belief in breaking cycles and aiding others, she, alongside her partner, started a university, embodying her convictions about lifelong learning and community empowerment.

In this Part 2 episode (with Part 1 featuring her husband and business partner, Marco), we hear Sandra tell of her childhood in a challenging neighborhood where education was not prioritized, leading her to face numerous obstacles from a young age, including living in poverty and experiencing violence. Determined to break the cycle, Sandra pursued education relentlessly, despite being unaware of available financial aid and feeling out of place in her initial university environment.

From that, Sandra shares her path to making it, the lessons learned along the way, and how she and Marco continue to drive forward, turning every challenge into an opportunity for growth and innovation. Join us as Sandra provides inspiration and insights on how adversity can fuel a purpose-driven life.

Welcome to Making It! This weekly show explores the lives and stories of entrepreneurs as they share their unique perspectives on their success and the path to making it.

“It's such a rush. . . founding a university, to see these kids, these young adults, finding their purpose and seeing that rush on them. And they're unstoppable, [as] they become successful.”— Sandra Johnson

    Guest Bio:

Sandra Johnson is currently the owner and co-founder of Accreditation Advisors Group and has dedicated much of her life to the education of others.

Immigrating to Lancaster, California, from Chile in 1970, Sandra attributes her success to her parents, who continually challenged her to overcome obstacles. Arriving in the United States in the first grade and speaking very little English, Sandra soon became the school’s translator, bridging the language gap between administrators and Spanish-speaking students — all while growing up in a tough neighborhood and, at times, receiving government assistance. Sandra’s childhood experience set the foundation of her passion: changing lives through education.

Previously, Sandra was the CFO and Co-Founder of the University of Antelope Valley. Since its inception in 1997, Sandra has overseen her company’s transformation from a small CPR company start-up into a nationally accredited higher education institution. The University of Antelope Valley has graduated over 1,000 students a year, with programs ranging from the master’s-level to career-specific certificates. The University employed over 100 residents and had two campuses, an athletics program, and over 30 academic programs and certifications. Sandra and her husband decided to retire from the University and sold the University of Antelope Valley in July 2022. They felt this would be the best move for the community to bring investors with higher volumes of funds to quickly assist in making the university a local mark and a global one.

Sandra has become a focal business leader in the Antelope Valley, earning the 2009 City of Lancaster’s Citizen of the Year Award, recognized jointly with Marco Johnson — her husband and co-founder of the university. In 2012, she obtained strong community support in her successful run for a seat on the Lancaster City Council. She recently addressed a Congressional Woman’s Conference on entrepreneurial fundamentals. She attributes her success to putting vision before profit. Sandra and Marco continually give back to the Antelope Valley community, supporting local charity and family shelter organizations, hosting community outreach events at the University, and assisting local entrepreneurs with guidance and support.

Sandra obtained a Master’s in Education with a Specialization in Curriculum Development and Outcomes Assessment and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, both from Aspen University.

  • Welcome to Making It! This weekly show explores the lives and stories of entrepreneurs as they share their unique perspectives on their success and the path to making it.

Marco Johnson is a former NFL player, former Los Angeles firefighter and paramedic, co-founder of The University of Antelope Valley, and co-founder of Accreditation Advisors Group.

“After my wife and I were grinding away, we kind of took a step back and said, ‘Hey, this is an opportunity for us to establish our community’s own traditional, regionally accredited university.’”— Marco Johnson

Marco Johnson is the owner and co-founder (with his wife, Sandra) of Accreditation Advisors Group, an education advisory firm.

Johnson’s road to entrepreneurship was a winding one. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science and marketing at the University of Hawaii, where he was a star wide receiver for the university team. After graduation, the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans) drafted Johnson in the 10th round of the 1988 NFL draft. He played two seasons on special teams for the Oilers and the Los Angeles Rams before trading his football for a fire hose.

Johnson witnessed hundreds of unnecessary civilian casualties throughout his career due to a lack of civilian cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first-aid training. The most disturbing event for him occurred on Christmas Eve, 1996. Johnson and his colleagues were battling a raging blaze in Los Angeles; a single mother and her three children were trapped inside a burning apartment building. While firefighters successfully rescued the family from the inferno, two children suffered respiratory failure and died before firefighters or emergency personnel could save them. The third child died in the rescue unit.

Johnson believes that if onlookers and passers-by had been trained in the most basic CPR and emergency assistance methods, one or perhaps all of the children would have survived. This tragic event prompted him and his wife to start a CPR school, initially as a side business.

That school grew to become the nationally accredited University of Antelope Valley. The university graduates more than 1,000 students a year, with programs ranging from master’s-level degrees to career-specific certificates. The university employs more than 100 people and has two campuses, an athletics program, and more than 30 academic programs and certifications. Marco and his wife decided to retire from the university and sold it in July 2022. They felt that the best move for the community was to bring investors with higher volumes of funds.

He and Sandra continually give back to the Antelope Valley community, supporting local charity and family shelter organizations, hosting community outreach events, and assisting local entrepreneurs with guidance and support.

Marco is the father of two wonderful children, Devion and Tiffany. He obtained a Master's in Education from the University of Hawaii.

  • Dr. Denisha Jones is the Executive Director of Defending the Early Years, an education justice advocacy and activist organization.

“Something has gone wrong that we've made kids ‘uncurious’ — from kindergarten to twelfth grade. And that's what the entire schooling is.” — Dr. Denisha Jones

Dr. Denisha Jones is the Executive Director of Defending the Early Years. She is a former kindergarten teacher and preschool director who has spent the past 20 years in teacher education. Denisha is an education justice advocate and activist working with various grassroots organizations to dismantle the neoliberal assault on public education. She is a part-time faculty member in the Art of Teaching program at Sarah Lawrence College and the School of Education at Howard University. Since 2017, she has served on the steering committee for the national Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action. Her first co-edited book, Black Lives Matter at School: An Uprising for Educational Justice, was published in December 2020 by Haymarket Books.

“Teacher Tom” Hobson is an early childhood educator, international speaker, education consultant, teacher of teachers, parent educator, and author. He is best known, however, for his namesake blog, Teacher Tom's Blog, where he has posted daily for over a decade, chronicling the life and times of his little preschool in the rain-soaked Pacific Northwest corner of the USA.

For nearly two decades, Teacher Tom was the sole employee of the Woodland Park Cooperative School, a parent-owned and operated school knit together by Teacher Tom's democratic, progressive play-based pedagogy. Teacher Tom came into teaching through the backdoor, so to speak, having enrolled his own child in a cooperative preschool, where he began working daily in his daughter's classroom as an assistant teacher under the tutelage of veteran educators — although he'll be the first to tell you that most of what he learned came from the children themselves. When it was time for his daughter to move on, he “stayed behind.”

Today, Teacher Tom shares his play-based pedagogy through online e-courses for early childhood educators; produces online early childhood conferences; consults with organizations about his "Family Schools" program; and inspires early-years audiences around the world (Greece, UK, Iceland, Australia, China, Vietnam, New Zealand, Canada, and across the US) both virtually and in-person with his engaging views on early childhood education, play, and pedagogy.

He was pressured by his blog readers into authoring his first book, aptly named Teacher Tom’s First Book, and is thrilled about the 2023 release of Teacher Tom’s Second Book.

  • Welcome to Making It! This weekly show explores the lives and stories of entrepreneurs as they share their unique perspectives on their success and the path to making it.

Larissa Banting is a publicist, journalist, and conversion copywriter with more than 25 years of experience.

“My daughter is... a horse jumper. She’s competing in Guatemala next month [and] I’m going to be taking the week off to go with her.”— Larissa Banting

Larissa Banting is a publicist, journalist, and conversion copywriter with more than 25 years of experience. Her job? To get you featured and famous!

Words have always been her passion and her playmates from an early age, when she would create stories and a complete guidebook to the culture of Pookinland, a made-up land suspiciously similar to a mashup of various East European countries and Baltic States (her parents worked with ethnic groups). After winning a poetry contest in Grade 4, she knew writing was going to be a “thing” for her.

Fast forward to university, where she was the only undergraduate to have her research papers published in academic journals. A few twists and turns of fate down the road and she found herself penning a weekly dance column in the arts magazines SEE and Vue. One jeté later and she was working with Alberta Ballet in marketing and public relations, followed by the Arden Theatre, City of St. Albert, Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival, and a slew of television and film productions as a unit publicist — as well as one-off stints for Bombay Sapphire Gin.

In 2002, she left the wintry abyss of Edmonton for the sunnier climes of Costa Rica, where she opened the destination wedding planning firm Weddings Costa Rica, which quickly grew to be the largest such company in Central America. Putting her publicity skills into high gear, her clients’ weddings were the first south of Mexico to be featured in international wedding magazines, and she had segments on various media outlets, such as Martha Stewart Living Radio. All this media attention soon had her named to the A-List Top 30 Destination Wedding Planners in the World as well as one of the 25 Most Influential Wedding Planners in the World. All these features helped grow her firm to cross the seven-figure threshold in only four short years. She knows firsthand the power of PR and how quickly it can grow your brand (and your bank account).
