Her passion is helping patients and providers think about thyroid function more broadly and recognizing that typical thyroid testing may not provide the full picture.

- Today I’d like to tell you about a study by Dr. Ahmet Karacalar, a plastic surgeon in Turkey who performs liposuction on patients with lipedema.
- He wrote this book during the lockdowns in 2020 and was published in May 2023.
- The title of his book is Lipoedema: An Evolutionary Mismatch.
- He presents archaeological evidence that lipedema is an “evolutionary mismatch” that dates back to the agricultural revolution.
- He then goes on to share with readers how a modern adaptation of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle may be the best treatment option for lipoedema.

In January 2017, Dr. Melissa Garcia Caballero joined Prof. Peter Carmeliet's prestigious laboratory in Leuven, Belgium, to investigate the therapeutic role of ketone body supplementation in lymphedema.
The exciting findings from this study garnered interest among clinicians and led to the initiation of a collaborative translational clinical Phase II trial (KetoLymph) to test the ketogenic diet's therapeutic potential in cancer patients who develop lymphedema.
Dr. García Caballero, co-author of over 35 scientific publications, is also a professor at the University of Málaga in Spain.

Dr. Nymo is an authorized clinical nutritionist with a PhD in obesity and metabolism from the Norwegian University of Technology and Science (NTNU).

Today, we explore a groundbreaking research paper published in JCI Insight by Ma and colleagues in June 2020, titled “Platelet factor 4 is a biomarker for lymphatic-promoted disorders.” The study, which included contributions from Dr. Stanley Rockson at Stanford University and Dr. Guillermo Oliver at Northwestern, aimed to identify a biomarker for lymphatic dysfunction and improve the diagnosis of lipedema, further confirming that lipedema is a lymphatic disorder.
