  • The topic of gut health comes up often on this show. It's important to revisit it because for everyone with an autoimmune thyroid condition, there will be be leaky gut and other gut issues to be dealt with.

In this episode, I talk with Donna Monthei, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Licensed Dietitian about a range of gut health topics including:

    - Donna's personal Hashimoto's story and then gut issue after taking 2 different antibiotics.

    - The gut-thyroid and gut-autoimmunity connection.

    - How to test for leaky gut and other gut issues.

    - The impact of antibiotics on the gut.

    - Parasites - what they are, how to know if you have one and should everyone do a parasite cleanse?

    - Ways to take your thyroid meds that bypass the digestive system, where appropriate.

What is ONE THING you can take away from this episode?

Donna Monthei is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Licensed Dietitian. She is the founder of EverVital Nutrition and creator of The Complete Gut Fix Program.

As a gut health expert, Donna has 20+ years of experience working with hundreds of people with chronic gut symptoms to help them poop like champions! πŸ†

She's also got her own Hashi's and gut health stories, which we'll dig into a bit here, and this intimate experience helps her understand and connect with her patients on a really unique level.

Donna is a mom of two 20-something boys... (I guess they're men now, right?) and is based in Austin, Texas, USA. She is a bit of a digital nomad during the hot summers and loves to be active with hiking, strength training, yoga, and cycling.

    Dream

No restraint - what would be the dreams for your health for next year?

    Create

Choosing the top 1-3 of your health dreams that can be worked on in 2024, created specific goals for them.

  • There are a variety of digestive issues associated with thyroid health including (but I'm afraid, not limited to) leaky gut, constipation, reflux, bloating, malabsorption, strong coeliac connection, irritable bowel syndrome and SIBO. SIBO certainly isn't limited to those with thyroid conditions, so share this episode with anyone you know with SIBO as it will benefit them regardless of their thyroid health.

Today's podcast discussion is a deep dive into SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth). To help me do this, I'm joined by The SIBO Coach, Jen Yundt Coles. We cover:

Jen's personal experience with SIBOWhat is SIBO?How is it different from other gut problems? What symptoms should people be aware of?How do you test for SIBO?How to you treat or manage SIBO? Traditional approach, diet, essential oils & herbs.Foods to avoid when managing SIBO.The importance of stress management for digestion. Is SIBO something that’s ongoing or can you β€˜get rid of it’?

If you think you might have SIBO, do get tested, it is a tricky digestive beast to deal with!

Jen Yundt Coles is an AFMC Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and Certified Acupressure Practitioner. She loves inspiring and guiding her clients to optimal health and wellness through promoting positive food & lifestyle changes. • There are many thyroid β€˜hot topics’ once you start digging into thyroid health information. Which guru do you follow? What action do you take? How do you apply what you learn to your own unique health situation.

I’ve been storing up a few of these hot topics for my guest Marek Doyle because I know he’s all over the nuance. He understands the grey between the black and white. He’s data driven and detail oriented. He’s also incredibily generous with his time – this being the longest interview I’ve done and whilst I don’t want to get into a habit of going over the hour, this was worth it!

So, in this conversation we (meaning Marek!) tackle:

Thyroid Antibodies Don’t Matter (common medical perspective) and they don’t cause destruction to the thyroid gland.Keto is great for thyroid health v keto is terrible for thyoid health.Low carb is great for thyroid health v you need carbs for production of T3 therefore low carb is bad.Fasting is a must for all health conditions (including not being a problem for thyroid patients) v fasting is too stressful and shouldn’t be used by thyroid patients.Ozempic/semaglutitde is the new wonder drug for weight loss v Ozempic is next β€˜I told you so’ in 5 years time.

There are many other thyroid hot topics, but I’ll save them for another podcast! If you have any thyroid hot topics you’d like to find the nuance in, please let me know for a future episode!.

Marek is a functional nutritional therapist who has spent the last 18 years building a model of personalized nutrition, based on the data of over 3,000 individual outcomes, 11,000 test results and extensive use of the scientific literature. Based in London, he offers one-to-one consultations for clients as well as training for practitioners.

He holds an MSc in Personalised Nutrition (CNELM/Middlesex Uni), as well as a CertHE in Nutritional Medicine (UWL), a Diploma in Allergy and Environmental Therapy (BIAET) and a Diploma in Advanced Nutrition for Optimal Health (GB Fitness/BCMA).

  • Let me introduce you to Victoria who is boldly sharing her thyroid story with you on this podcast episode.

Victoria isn't 40 yet and was suffering from debilitating swollen feet & ankles, to the point she often couldn't wear shoes. The doctors couldn't figure out why so basically ignored it until an accident sent her to hospital and the ER doctor ran some tests. She was found to be hypothyroid, put on medication and told nothing other than, take a pill every day now for life.

Fast forward a couple of years and she ends up in hospital again with a burst appendix and decided it was time to take her health into her own hands.

That was only in January this year and now the swelling in her feet & ankles is gone, her back surgery (for pain/sciatica) is cancelled, she's lost weight and is on the road to healing.

What's her secret? Well you have to listen to the episode to hear it all, but it involves being proactive, making some diet & lifestyle changes & getting a thyroid support team (which included my KISS Thyroid Coaching Program so you'll want to check that out too!)

Enjoy being encouraged by Victoria's story.

  • For many of us with thyroid conditions, pain is a constant. Like with most aspects of thyroid health 'it's complicated' and there is never 1 simple solution. HOWEVER, this doesn't mean there aren't solutions and options to try!

Her remarkable healing journey became the basis for her programs: Reboot from Chronic Illness and the Chronic Illness Recovery Blueprint. She’s also written an ebook β€œDetoxing Endocrine Disruptors: Essential Checklist” and is a featured author in the Amazon International Best Seller: Teach Your Expertise. • I talk a lot on this podcast about different diet and lifestyle interventions that may help you live well with your thyroid condition. But how do you know which (if any) have any scientific validation?

In this episode I'm talking with Ellen Steinke about what science she's discovered across various aspects of a thyroid lifestyle and also how the average thyroid patient can know where and how to look for the science behind various thyroid diet & lifestyle interventions.

The key areas we cover in this episode are:

Ellen's personal thyroid storyWhat science is there/isn't there behind dietary changes popular in thyroid health eg gluten free, paleo, AIP.What science is there/isn't there behind nutritional deficiencies. What science is there/isn't there behind whether or not to supplement with iodine when you have Hashimoto's.Castor oil packs and other more natural remedies - how to consider those. How to weigh the 'evidence' particularly in areas where there isn't the money for a whole lot of rigorous research.Tips for doing your own investigation into the science (or not) behind whatever diet/lifestyle intervention you'd like to investigate.

Ellen Steinke by a pre-med biology graduate and certified nutrition coach. Diagnosed with Hashimoto's herself, she distills complex information into understandable, actionable advice. She also leverages her personal journey and professional expertise to empower you with the knowledge and tools needed to take back control of your health.

  • With all the talk on my podcast about living a thyroid-friendly lifestyle, you might wonder, what does that actually look like on a day to day basis. Let me let you take a look into a 'typical' day in my life. Not that my life is perfect or all that interesting but sometimes it's helpful just to see what someone else does to live in a certain way.

Hopefully there might be one thing from what I do that is something you can take an try in your life. What works for me might not work for you or may be applied slightly differently.

If you've been listening for long enough, you'll have heard me say that whilst there are some common areas we all need to explore in our our journies, you will need to find your own unique lifestyle. I wish there was a formula or protocol for a happy thyroid but there just isn't.

This is simply what I'm doing at the moment, and this can and will change over time as I adapt to changes in my health or life!

The key areas I cover in this episode are:
My morning routine - exercise, breakfast, supplements etc.
    My work day.
My dinner and evening routines - including food, sleep, supplements and movement.

Join the Healthy Bites Summit hosted by fellow Aussie Thyroid Advocate and Naturopath, Megan Taslaman. I'm one of the speakers along side many others talking about a range of topics connected to thyroid health. It's FREE, starts 4 September and you can sign up here.

  • Have you still got your gallbladder? Many with Hashimoto's don't. I had mine removed 17 years ago. Whether you have yours still or not, this is a conversation I've been wanting to have on the show for a long time because it really is so important for your liver and thyroid health too.

I'm thrilled speak today with Olivia Haas, integrative nutritionist specialising in gallbladder health. Many people with gallbladder issues are often unaware of the vital connection between this organ and thyroid health. Olivia brings her personal journey alongside her professional expertise to the table, offering a holistic approach on how to navigate gallbladder disease, and its potential links to hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's.

This episode takes us on a deep exploration of the bi-directional relationship between the gallbladder and thyroid, and how hypothyroidism can increase the risk of gallbladder problems. Olivia, with her practical advice, shines a light on the role of lifestyle and diet in managing gallbladder health and provides support strategies for those who no longer have a gallbladder. The conversation also extends to the importance of liver health in relation to gallbladder problems, illuminating the interconnectedness of these crucial body parts.
