Surprised? We're dropping in your feed a bit earlier this week because we wanted to celebrate Lunar New Year with you guysThis week we're talking about how Lunar New Year has become more important as we get older - especially if you're a child of immigrants and don't have many family near you.We understand that for many people, Lunar New Year will be a bit different. Just hours before we started recording, our city Victoria in Australia went into a 5 day lockdown sowe're also spending it a bit different. In this episode, we talk about New Year superstitions and how some of them sound a bit unrealistic. We also discuss how even though we may not necessarily believe in many of them, we have kind of followed them by default because it has been drilled into us since we were young by our parents. We also discuss whether as millennials living in Western countries, if we will be continuing these traditions. This week for recommendation time, we are recommending you to get behind the #AsiansAreHuman & #TheyCantBurnUsAll movement to rise awareness about the increased hate crimes against Asians everywhere around the world. Another month, another cultural appropriation! This week we are switching things up. You might notice the show sounds a bit different and that's because we'll only be focusing on one topic per week to give us more time to really dig deeper into the topics we cover. Also, we're both expecting really a busy year for us personally so we wanted to make it manageable for ourselves.BUT let's talk about the problematic sex and relationship coach Kim Anami's music video called 'Kung Fu Vagina'. Anami landed in hot waters last week after she culturally appropriated Asian culture to sell and promote her online courses. There's a few problematic things about the video - It samples Carl Douglas' catchy but problematic 70's song ' Kung Fu Fighting' which has the oriental riff - The music video fetishizes Asian women - Anami wears chopsticks in her hair - Mismatch Chinese & Japanese culture: although the intention to appropriate Chinese culture, she wears a Kimino... - It uses the WONTON FONT, which further perpetuates what Westerners think Chinese characters look likeSince recording, we have learnt that she's been deleting comments about those pointing out the cultural appropriation and Twitter users have found that she's publicly liked anti-BLM tweets. Do we see a pattern here? This week, Phil recommends watching the Korean drama 'True Beauty' which is available on Viki. Hello Juicy Lemoners! We're taking a bit of a break this week so we're revisiting some of our favourite moments in the past year! Can you believe it's been almost a year since LEMON was launched?!Fighting anti-Asian racism in AustraliaRising anti-China sentiments in the early days of COVID-19 led to an increased number of racist attacks towards Asian-Australians. In this segment, we discuss and share our experiences of the casual racism we faced but also talk about how many Asian-Australians actually don't know where the line is drawn for 'casual racism' because it's something that we've all grown up with and dealt with on a daily basis. Why do Asian people Anglicised our names? In this segment, we explore why our parents decided to give us English names and why so many international students coming to Australia are encouraged by their teachers to adopt and Anglicise their names. The Asian Black ProblemBlack Lives Matters has been one of the biggest movements of our generation but for the Asian community, it has always been viewed as a white vs black person problem. In this episode, we discuss why Asian pop culture and societies in Asia need to do better to further the discussion around colourism and BLM.Join in on the discussion on our socials!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lemonpodcastshow/Instagram: http://bit.ly/2TPE0dfTwitter: http://bit.ly/2TEpfLaOur Spotify Playlist: https://spoti.fi/2IMmpxJHosted by:Phillip Kuoch: https://bit.ly/PhilsIGThomas Tan Tan: http://bit.ly/2TU4QCk

What’s in a name? Particularly in Australia, having a distinctly foreign name has its positives and negatives, and I’ve always had this inkling that there’s a different way we think about names in Australia compared to Chinese culture in particular, but I could never quite put my finger on it. This episode we explore how this difference in names affects us.Shoes Off is a written, produced and edited podcast that educates, connects and inspires Asian Australians, because we don’t talk about culture enough. Each episode is topic-driven, and we'll bring you stories and thoughts from interesting Aussie Asians, academics and everyday folk so we can question, explore and celebrate what it means to be an Asian in Australia.Subscribe to Shoes Off: http://bit.ly/ShoesOffPod
