  • This week, we veer a bit away from our typical subject matter to chat about a topic that Erin and Abby find interesting: the Enneagram. We are joined by guest, Marathana Prothro, an Assistant Professor of Communication at Bluffton University who is also certified through the Enneagram Institute of Ohio.

In our conversation with Marathana, we chat about how the Enneagram differs from other personality tools, how being Mennonite might impact how an Enneagram number presents or is interpreted, and spend a fair amount of time trying to help Abby determine what her Enneagram number might be.

While this episode does cover some of the basics of the Enneagram - what it is, and a brief overview of the 9 types - if the Enneagram is new to you, we recommend looking at the Enneagram Institute website for a quick primer. We use a couple terms in this episode without explanation, for example "wings" (the number directly left or right of one's primary enneagram number - for example, Erin is a 7 wing 6), and "directions of integration" or disintegration which refer to how an enneagram type grows, or reacts to stress.

We chat about Steve's work and research, current projects, interesting questions he's been asked about the Amish, and what the word "haystack" means to him.

Steve has authored, co-authored, and edited many books and articles on the Amish. A few select items from that list include:

    Divine Rivals, Rebecca Ross
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Taylor Jenkins Reid

  • This week we wrap up season 5! As a reminder, season 5 was shorter to accommodate Tillie's opportunity to lead a study abroad semester in Ecuador. We chat about season 5, issue a few corrections, play a few bloopers, and provide updated stats.

We will be back soon with season 6! Plans are still underway, but after a bit of hiatus for planning and recording, Abby and Erin will be launching a season of interviews and episodes with guests - if you have recommendations for people we should talk to, please let us know!

We will provide Tillie updates during Season 6 as well, but you can also follow the group's adventures on the Goshen College SST blog: https://www.goshen.edu/ecuador/

  • This week, the MennoBrarians discuss the book White Mosque with author Sofia Samatar. The White Mosque weaves together personal reflections on Samatar's experiences as a Mennonite, with the story of Samatar's trip to Uzbekistan to learn more about the sect of Mennonites who pilgrimaged to Ak Metchet in the 1880s. It's a fascinating read, and we recommend you all add it your reading list.

We discuss this slice of Mennonite history, famous-ish Mennonites, what it's like for a speculative fiction writer to write a memoir, and much much more.

This week, the MennoBrarians discuss the 2008 movie Sex Drive, which can currently be found on Netflix. Sex Drive is a coming of age comedy about three teens who take a road trip to Knoxville, TN, with a short detour through Amish country that really does include a Fall Out Boy Rumpsringa Concert. We chat trips with friends, Amish mechanics, the dangers of driving cars through corn fields, and much more.

Content note: due to the content of the movie we are discussing, be aware that our episode contains mild sexual references and innuendo.

  • This week, the Mennobrarians chat with historian John D. Roth, Project Director for MennoMedia’s project “Anabaptism at 500” and former Professor of History at Goshen College, about his most recent book, A Mennonite College for Everyone(?): Goshen College and the Quest for Identity and Inclusion, 1960-2020. We chat writing history, the myth of Mennonite exceptionalism, and what we can learn from the past attempts (and often failures) to meaningful expand the definition of what it means to be a Mennonite or a Mennonite institution. We also subject John to the Amish title generator and a round of Balderdutch.

You can find John Roth's book for sale at Fables bookstore in Goshen, IN.

X-files season 1, ep 14, "Gender Bender," aired in 1994. This episode focused on a series on a group known as The Kindred that are "similar to the Amish," but turns out, they are aliens.

  • This week, the MennoBrarians take a deep dive into Amish Romance self-publishing. Inspired by the conversation on Amish Country Treasure in season 2, in which Tillie speculated the book was written by a bot, Erin went on a research journey to see if she could figure out if the text was written by a human or AI (findings: inconclusive). In this episode, Erin shares some of what she found during this research journey.

We chat self-publishing, random research topics, and whether it actually matters if bots write the books we read.
