This week I read out an excerpt of an address of Martin Lloyd-Jones to his own church during an annual day away as a church family in 1963. Encouragingly for us, the crux of what Lloyd-Jones was saying 61 years ago in 1963 is the same embryonic train of thought as the things I have written in The Glorious Few in 2023, (60 years hence).
“If I am right in my diagnosis, the position is moving very rapidly and unless we do something, it may be too late; or we may be so overwhelmed in disaster that it will only be out of a terrible wreckage that we may gradually crawl out into a new position. I say the alternative is to recognise that it is time for us to act, to clarify our own minds.”— MLJ (1963)

In this week’s episode of Into the Pray, I drive to a local quiet spot on the east coast of north Scotland to read for you a 1953 address of Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones that ultimately caused John Stott, British Theologian from Cambridge, to publicly rebuke him.
Lloyd-Jones disagreed with ecumenicalism and the socio-political gospel of Billy Graham so strongly that he chose to face the ignominy that resulted from distancing himself from them rather than falling into the reality of Galatians 1:7-8.
Think along with me — are the attitudes which are central to the ecumenical agenda — in the Church and within Christian homes — really the foundations of faithful Christian relationships that are true to the gospel of Jesus Christ? What really of these “agree to disagree” agendas that cast a very dark shadow over those who refuse to agree that some matters, and some behaviours, shouldn’t ever be expected to change?

As Nick and Mairi discuss together, on the one hand we should be all calling out the contradictory condition of the Church with heated indignation and the sharpness of the prophetic gifts of the Holy Spirit, (50% of the Church are in error to the dishonour of God), but we should also produce the bountiful fruit in keeping with His nature.

Edward opened up about the inordinate pressures that he and his family are being put under by the godless government of the land which now means that a bottle of water is more expensive (of more worth) than a bottle of milk. But what does this have to do with eating at McDonald's and shopping with Amazon?

The question as to whether or not the scale and shock of the RZIM scandal was sufficient to rouse the Church from comatose is rhetorical; of course it wasn't. Neither was COVID-19, church closures and the emergence of totalitarian governments. Nevertheless, if we are going to take Jesus' return seriously, the question remains: what should happen when Christian leaders fall?

This week I happened to see a job advert on their website entitled, “Pastoral minister, part-time, LGBT inclusive church”. So I wrote to Premier to enquire as to what was going on.

It’s a tender picture: a fine Christian lady in her ninth decade struggling to grasp the need of God to “smite” His Bride.
Uncertainty about this is completely understandable but this video below addresses what is now a chasm of more than 3 years in church history.
It is insane to ask the question in the middle of the night and then, come the morning, refuse to listen to the answer.

When the term "wounded prophet" is used, often by church pastors, what is really going on?
Of the biblical Prophets, Abraham Heschel wrote:
"The sorts of crimes and even the amount of delinquency that fill the prophets of Israel with dismay do not go beyond that which we regard as normal, as typical ingredients of social dynamics. To us a single act of injustice – cheating business, exploitation of the poor – is slight; to the prophets, a disaster. To us injustice is injurious to the welfare of the people; to the prophets it is a deathblow to existence: to us, an episode; to them, a catastrophe, a threat to the world."
