Cody’s focus has transitioned now to his daughter Saylor Ohl, and helping her to learn to be one of the best breakaway ropers in the world. “I am training her to be in the top 10%, to get 3 checks out of 5 instead of 1 out of 10,” says Cody.

He now helps breakaway ropers sharpen their skillset. Through his approach of building confidence in and out of the arena, Cody’s main focus points are; horsemanship, roping cattle, roping mechanics, and keeping the winners mentality. Cody talks about roping cattle and how important they are in creating the best practice pen situation, “We rope great calves, so you don't get your skirt blown up, and these girls learn to trust their left hand, and go rope the calf.”

Cody talks about learning the style of roping that works best for you. Learning the “feel” of roping, of horsemanship, and of self discipline. He has broken down the sport of roping to every finite detail that goes into the run. Cody talks about strength in riding, your core, and your mind. His biggest focus is trusting the process, and being the top 10% of ropers.

  • When you think of rodeo queens odds are the first things that come to mind are rhinestones and big hair, but what if we introduced you to the biggest advocates in the sport of rodeo, the queens. Kaelanne Quinonez, Miss Rodeo USA 2024, is a shining example of what being an advocate for the sport of rodeo looks like and proof that you don’t have to be born into the sport to pave your own way. Kaelanne hails from the suburbs of the Central Coast of California and spent her childhood heavily involved in the Girl Scouts of America advocating for natural resources and conservation, making her a natural fit for queening and the western way of life and all that it entails. Rodeo queens stand on the front lines educating the public and promoting the sport of rodeo, they are not only required to have complete knowledge of the rulebooks, but public speaking skills, horsemanship, knowledge of animal welfare and one killer closet full of outfits! Jordan Jo and Kaelanne talk all things queening, rodeo advocacy, the western way of life, having a never settle outlook on life and going after the life you want.

About the Miss Rodeo USA Association: The Miss Rodeo USA Association is proud to have represented the International Professional Rodeo Association for over five decades. Young ladies from around the nation have competed and won the coveted title that is awarded each January at the International Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Through the love of rodeo, generous sponsorships, and embracing our heritage while focusing on our future, the Miss Rodeo USA Association hopes to continue to grow and offer the opportunity of a lifetime to cowgirls across the United States.

  • Makenzie Mayes is a force to be reckoned with, and she showed us why last month. Makenzie and her incredible horse Rousey were absolutely BLAZING. The team set an arena record with a 12.94 in Cowtown Coliseum, they clinched the barrel racing win for the Free Riders at Kid Rock's Rock N Rodeo and competed in AT&T Stadium in the final round of the Women's Rodeo Championship event during the PBR Finals for their shot at $60,000!

Makenzie comes from a rodeo family and her never lose attitude has taken her far in the arena as an all-around cowgirl. Jordan Jo sits down with Makenzie to talk about what a thrilling experience the month of May was, the inside scoop on her trailer full of equine athletes and of course a little bit about the breakaway roping.
