  • We love real estate! Any long-time listener of the podcast knows that we’re fans of investing in real estate. We both have a handful of rentals and a decent chunk of our financial success is due to those houses! That being said, we also approach the conversation with a degree of reservation because we don’t think it’s for everyone- it’s not nearly the source of passive income like many would lead you to believe. Not to mention we happened to dip our toes in the waters at a historically great period of time. So we’re nuanced, but our guest today is NOT! Here to preach the real estate gospel is Alan Corey who is all-in: he’s a realtor, author of A Million Bucks By 30 as well as House FIRE, which we’ll be discussing today, and of course an investor himself. Alan is a self-proclaimed ‘real estate maximalist’ here in our wonderful city of Atlanta, and we’re going to talk about all things real estate- the current state of the market, why first time home buyers shouldn’t wait, why he doesn’t care about interest rates as an investor, the role of leverage when investing in real estate, if umbrella insurance is enough to mitigate risk, how to think about investing in an Airbnb, vacation rentals, and more!

  • When you read the words: tightwad and spendthrift, it’s likely that you find yourself drawn to one over the other. Maybe you’ve always been on the cheaper end of the spectrum and you see it as being a responsible adult. Or maybe you’re more like a lot of Americans and you find it impossible to pass up a good sale- even if you don’t necessarily need that item you just want to have some fun! Or perhaps you’re what our guest today calls an ‘unconflicted consumer’. Either way, the good news is that you’re not locked into this archetype forever. You can modify your behavior which can be incredibly beneficial, not only for your personal financial goals, but also to your relationship with your spouse or significant other. To talk about that and more today, is Scott Rick. Scott holds a PhD in Behavioral Decision Research from Carnegie Mellon. He’s known for his work on consumer financial decision-making where Scott focuses on the emotional aspects that influence spending behaviors and his latest book is Tightwads and Spendthrifts: Navigating the Money Minefield in Real Relationships. Today we discuss how retail therapy actually works, why financial opposites tend to attract, the best ways for couples to combine their money, “spending roles” for tightwads and spendthrifts, and much more!

  • … literally, we’re discussing why some of the brightest minds at Stanford University need just as much instruction for their money as the typical American. At such a competitive school, with one of the lowest acceptance rates, you’d think those students have everything figured out, but you’d be wrong! Our guest today, Adam Nash, is a personal finance enthusiast and adjunct lecturer at Stanford University. And today we cover topics like why he starts the course with behavioral finance and how prioritizing income over expenses can bring a traditionally dry subject to life. But beyond the classroom, Adam’s career spans roles at companies like Dropbox, eBay, and even Apple to just name a few that we use on a daily basis. And he’s currently serving as the CEO and co-founder of Daffy, which is a fintech platform centered around charitable giving. So even though it’s not December, we’re also going to talk about strategically giving your money away, why more folks need to consider donor advised funds, and how Daffy can help to make us all more charitable and generous individuals.

  • Sure, historically speaking, the stock market always goes up but will it continue to go up?! None of us are willing to make any predictions, but let’s just say that if that’s NOT the case, we’ve got much bigger problems at hand. But the fundamental question remains: why does the stock market grow? This question is answered today by Brian Feroldi, whose journey into the financial realm has led to writing over 3,000 articles on stocks and investing for the Motley Fool. He’s a YouTube star with millions of views where he explains the ins and outs of individual companies and broadly speaking the market as a whole. And Brian’s recent book: “Why Does the Stock Market Go Up?” is what we’re getting into today. This episode is an investing deep dive as we demystify some investing concepts like why stocks are the top performing asset class, what it means to ‘own stock’, why introverts are better investors than extroverts, investing in psychopaths, how to know if single stock investing is for you, and much more!

  • Your birthday comes around every year- and you never forget because it’s something that you look forward to! But we’d argue that there are certain financial tasks that we should also revisit at least once a year, but we’re less than enthusiastic about knocking them out. This neglect is compounded by the fact that our finances have gotten more complicated than ever. You likely have accounts everywhere: you might have multiple 401ks, savings accounts, credit cards- it might feel like there’s too much going on as you juggle more logins than you can keep up with. Now these are tasks that don’t need to become ongoing obligations, but we do think they will help you make your personal finances more manageable. Whether it’s something as straightforward and practical as making some tweaks to your budget or if it’s the beginning of a season of reevaluating your life goals, we have a number of tasks that will allow you to spring clean your finances.

  • What does it mean to be rich? I think very few folks feel rich, even if they are doing really well for themselves. And oftentimes that’s due to the hedonic treadmill as we’re constantly moving the goalposts as to what it is that we think will make us happy. Most folks rarely feel like they simply have enough. But guess what- a lot of folks would be surprised to find themselves in the top 10% of earners in the US. And when you make a lot of money, or at least hope to, it takes a different approach to how you should handle your finances. That’s why we’re excited to be joined by Rachael Camp, owner of Camp Wealth, who is on a mission to help her clients build and preserve their wealth. As a Certified Financial Planner, Rachael not only knows the right moves to make with her money, but she’s actually doing it- she’s designed a financial life that allows her to prioritize the things that are important to her like a matcha tea ritual and snowboarding, by minimizing other expenses, all while advising clients who make upwards of seven figures. Listen as we discuss Rachael’s history with the FIRE movement, delayed gratification, financial mistakes of higher earners, and much more!

  • Think about any great relationship that you have- whether that’s with your partner, a friend, or even a boss. In each of those examples, there’s a really good chance that you’re both really good at talking and relating to one another. At the core of any healthy relationship is the ability to feel heard and understood, and that’s why communicating is so important!
