This week we take the Houndsman XP faithful to the blackberry thickets of the Pacific Northwest hunting rabbits with beagles.
Seth traveled to Oregon to experience a wide variety of hound hunting styles and techniques and on the last day came to hunt rabbits with those tiny troopers of the brush, Beagles. Seth experienced a day of great success with David Church’s and Missy Fix’s dogs bringing in 2 different species of rabbits caught by the beagles in those harsh thickets. Seth was very enthusiastic to sit down with David and hear his story with these wonderful little hounds to pick his brain about the unique aspects of hunting in the Pacific Northwest with these dogs and much more!

His great grandfathers tamed a wild place. His ancestors include the first white child born in Bryce Canyon, Utah. He has hunted wild places before many white people ever saw it. He established a line of hounds that span 50 generations of game catchers, roped and captured mountain lions alone, started a 3 generation outfitting business, had horse wrecks and heart ache and victory. This is Stan Mecham.
Mr Stan Mecham will be 88 years old this year. With nearly nine decades under his belt, his life has been so filled with adventure he has never moved away from his hometown of Tropic, UT.

Aggression, man made or genetic? Can you recognize aggressive behavior? Why does your hound growl? Have you put your hound in a situation that may manifest itself into full blown fight mode?
Heath Hyatt joins Chris for this in depth discussion about dog behavior and how it effects houndsmen. Heath explains the why it is important to be able to identify what type of aggression your hound is showing. Once we know why the dog is being aggressive we can take step to redirect behavior. Heath identifies key areas that are of the utmost concern for houndsmen. Finally Chris and Heath discuss real life situations and how to avoid a reaction to a negative event.
There is no definitive answer to how to correct aggression. Each situation is different and should be approached on its own merit. Listeners will have some valuable take aways and will increase their houndsmen skills with this one.

Mike Cauley has been breeding and hunting with bulldogs his entire life. For more than forty years Mike has been using American Pit Bull Terriers as the clean up crew for his hog hunting adventures.
Chris and Mike discuss the history of bulldogs from the farm, working free range livestock, to the marsh, catching wild hogs. In this episode of the Houndsman XP podcast, the boys renew a longtime friendship with Louisiana’s Mike Cauley, best known for the successful exploits of his Bayou Cajun Plott Hound pack on wild hogs and on bears, both the blacks of the Northwoods of the US and Canada and the giant browns of Sweden.
Cauley primarily hunts hogs in the swamps and bayous of southeastern Louisiana where he has caught hundreds of the species over the years. He has also made three trips to Sweden to hunt the country’s huge brown bears after shipping several Plott Hounds to hunters there. One of the bears taken with Cauley-bred Plotts ranks fourth among Sweden’s largest trophy bears. Cauley’s experiences hunting brown bears in Sweden are thoroughly examined.
Discussions move to questions about why he chose hogs as his game of choice and why he chose the Plott breed over other breeds of hounds. An in-depth discussion evolves concerning the bulldog’s role in hunting hogs, what makes a good catch dog and how hounds and bulldogs are trained to work together. Cauley’s favorite bloodlines of bulldogs and curs used for catching dangerous wild boars are also explored.
Our hosts implore Cauley to describe the typical Deep South hog hunt with dogs, the type of territory he hunts and the type of equipment he uses on the hunt. Cauley also discusses the advantages and the pitfalls of using the same dogs on hogs and bears. Realizing many of the hogs Cauley catches are taken alive, additional questions emerge about how hogs are caught and what are the risks to hunter and hound. An exciting story of Trapper and the junkyard hog helps to make this inaugural episode on hog hunting one that listeners will surely enjoy.
