The 5 Mics podcast series tells the most significant stories in hip-hop culture. Many stories have never been told, and certainly not with the authenticity, accuracy, and attention to detail that only Breakbeat can deliver. Season 1 of the 5 Mics series is undoubtedly a hip-hop classic! The Source magazine was known in the 1990s as the “Bible Of Hip-Hop.” Among its many contributions, the magazine’s “Unsigned Hype” column ranks near the top. Each month, “Unsigned Hype” would feature one artist selected from hundreds of demo tapes that rappers worldwide would send to the magazine’s offices in New York City. The column literally launched the careers of some of the biggest names in hip-hop. Legends like The Notorious B.I.G, Common, Eminem, DMX, Capone-N-Noreaga, Pitbull, and others all got their start by being featured in “Unsigned Hype” before they had a record deal. Season 1 of the 5 Mics series is entitled “It Was All A Dream: The Untold Story of Unsigned Hype,” and it brings hip-hop fans the never-before-heard tales behind the hype, as told by the journalists, MCs, and others who lived it while examining how this little column made big waves in the rap revolution.
