  • Today on the podcast we talk about something near and dear to my heart. Those feelings of insecurity that tell us "I'm not good enough," "I'm not smart enough,"..."I'm not brave enough."

As I wrestle with my own insecurities about speaking at an upcoming conference I realized that the world needs something only I can give them...me.

The world needs something that only you can give them.

    You.

Let your brave light shine, my friends.

    We need you.

  • So there I was, afraid of dogs.

So there I was, afraid that my parachute wouldn't open as I took my first jump out of a C-130 at the US Army Airborne School.

So there I was, completely exhausted after laboring for 36 hours to deliver a 9 pound, 2 ounce baby boy, scared that I didn't have the what it takes to be a Mom.

So there I was cuddled with my 7-year-old the other night telling him stories about times when I've been afraid and what I've done to push forward through the fear.

He was telling me about something that he was scared of and it suddenly hit me.

I've been pushing my children to try to be brave. We reward bravery and course in our house. Perhaps we need to do something different.

Perhaps instead we need to share times in our lives when we've been scared so our children know that it's perfectly normal and okay to be afraid.

The problem is when fear paralyzes us and keeps us from reaching into the unknown.

Today on the podcast we're talking about fear. I hope you enjoy it.

  • Welcome to episode 80.

I’ve been taking a break lately.

Wondering about the future of the podcast.

I’ve been bored with our long interview format.

I haven’t had time for interviews or to edit interviews or publish episodes.

I’ve thought about shutting the show down and taking a big break forever from it.

But in a lot of ways I’ve missed the chance to just turn on my computer, and talk to you, one on one as if you’re right here in the room with me.

So I’m back, the show is back but with a different twist.

I think this twist shows the evolution of HLAW as an online business, it shows the evolution of HLAW as we’ve hired staff and brought on Annie as our CAO, it also reflects changes in my own life as I’ve learned to delegate tasks more, and navigate the world as an outdoor retailer and as a female combat veteran struggling to balance the wants and needs of my husband and family with my own quest for outdoor adventure, the management of HLAW and the day-to-day operations of my ski shop.

What you’re going to see now on the HLAW podcast isn't’ just interviews, I hope to bring you along for the ride for topics ranging from hiking, to small business to motherhood and being a wife.

We’re going to open up our content to so much more and really share a lot more of our successes and our struggles. Sometimes it’ll be me talking about what I learned this week, sometimes this show will be a mix of short interviews, we might do some long form interviews too.

We’re finding the courage to be authentic here. We’re finding the courage to change and adapt and hopefully you’ll stick around.

Today on the show we’re talking about failure.

    And why it's an option.

Episode 80 is sponsored by Deuter, they are a proud partner of HLAW and sponsoring our upcoming Take Your Daughter On A Hike Day and Outdoor Woman retreat. Other retreat sponsors include Rx bars, Noso patches, and Kula cloth.

  • Hi Friends,

Rebecca here with a big announcement.

    I quit.

It's hard to quit something that you start, so I guess I'm not really quitting I'm just stepping down to hand the reigns of Hike Like A Woman leadership off to someone new. Someone with passion and motivation, someone with new ideas and who has the time and drive to lead our staff and Ambassadors. That person will be our Chief Adventure Officer and I'll let you know who she is on August 1st.

Now I'm still going to be doing our weekly podcast but there will be a new woman making decisions and working hard behind the scenes to serve the Hike Like A Woman community. I have a pretty good idea who this woman is going to be and I think she'll take HLAW in a direction of continued radness.

So this isn't a farewell podcast episode, rather it's an explanation of events in my life that have triggered the decision to step down and play less of a leadership role in HLAW.

I hope you'll listen to it and know how much this community has and will always mean to me.

    Enjoy!

  • Way back in February I was laid up for a few weeks with an unexpected surgery.

Naturally, I had to binge watch Season 29 of The Amazing Race.

While watching the show I was instantly inspired by Becca Droz. She had two braids and a permanent smile on her face for the entire race.

    What’s not to like?

But, the more I learned about Becca the more I realized that I needed to have her on the podcast because I believe that she can inspire the masses.

So, I shot her an email, she obliged and I’m super stoked to share her interview with her today.

  • Welcome to episode 074 of the Hike Like A Woman podcast.

This episode is a little unusual.

I mean, this is HLAW so things are always unusual ;)

Today Rebecca spends a few minutes answering reader questions and she talks all about her new store, Basecamp in beautiful downtown Laramie Wyoming.

We hope you enjoy today's Q&A session.

  • Welcome back to the HLAW podcast!

After a short hiatus, we're back with a quick episode.

During today's show, Annie and I talk about what's been going on the past month, what's going on in the future with HLAW and our Ambassador program.

We'll give you a heads up that this show was recorded at my gear shop last Friday night and I forgot my microphone so audio quality isn't awesome but hang in there with us because our conversation was pretty fun.

I hope you enjoy this relaxed update on what's been going on the past month.

p.s. This episode is sponsored by Wyoming Tourism. If you're looking for a fun adventure in the beautiful state of Wyoming come join me!

  • Hi Everyone,

    Rebecca here.

    Today's podcast episode isn't awesome.

It's a quick note to let you know that I need to step away from the podcast for just a month as I tackle the beast that is purchasing a gear shop.

For the past 8 months I've been transitioning myself into the world of outdoor retail as I've been in the process of buying a gear shop that has been in my town for over 36 years.

The transition started as I researched the clothing and gear that was sold at the store. Then I learned about taxes and payroll. Then I learned about merchandising. Then I started setting up vendor accounts, learning about point of sale systems, coming up with a business plan, figuring out my finances, and establishing systems and processes to hire, train and fire employees.

My dream of owning my own gear shop came to fruition on April 1st. Whose the fool? And while I'm one of those people who always thinks that I can do everything on my own as I peeled back 36 years worth of dust in the shop I realized that I needed to drop something on my plate in order to maintain my sanity as we remodel and train staff so that we can get out doors open as quickly as possible.

As much as I'd love to drop doing the laundry, or grocery shopping ultimately I decided that I need to step away from the podcast for the next month to really focus on the shop.

Unfortunately I can delegate just about everything related to HLAW to my amazing staff but the podcast is just one of those things that I do every week and it's not something I'm ready to pass off to someone else.

At the same time, I LOVE putting together the podcast, so it's not going away any time soon...I'm just stepping back to take a little breather.

I hate it when my favorite podcasts take time off so I know this isn't going to be a popular move with a lot of our loyal listeners but at the same time I know that if you're a true HLAW fan you know that we value self care and that means not driving ourselves to the point of exhaustion no matter how badly we feel about letting people down.

So my hiatus begins today. But I promise to be back the first part of May with a few interviews that I've already recorded and just haven't had time to edit.

If you're out there, feeling frazzled and like you're on the brink of burnout I'd invite you to take a little time off of something with me ~ stop doing one thing even if you love it so you can spend a little bit of extra time taking care of yourself.

    Thanks for your support.

    You're all so rad.

    ~Rebecca

Alex is a mom, a hiker, a cyclist, a comedy writer and founder of who often channels her inner Katniss with archery.

Today on the show we chat about everything from starting a new business to being authentic and I think you're going to love our conversation.

Alex is humble, down-to-earth and hardworking and if you don't have time to listen to the full interview today that last five minutes of the show where she tells me what advice she'd give to her 12-year-old self is worth a listen.

    This quote gave me goosebumps.

First up Rebecca talks about being inspired by the courage and strength of a few amazing women during one of her deployments to Iraq while serving in the Army.

Then Jessica, Christina and Sarah share stories of women who have helped mentor them in the outdoors.

  • Hi Everyone

Rebecca here with episode 065 of the HLAW Podcast.

We're weird here but this is our weirdest episode yet.

Yesterday afternoon I was in my office trying to edit a podcast episode.

My children were upstairs being super loud and obnoxious and it was actually starting to get on my nerves.

I went upstairs to tell them to keep the noise down when I discovered that they had pitched their play tent in the living room, pulled their cross-country skis out of the gear closet, put their ski boots on their feet and were playing the game of "Polar Explorer."

Naturally, my heart melted a wee bit and the podcast episode that I was editing got pushed aside because I knew then and there that I needed to have a heart-to-heart with my kiddos about the importance of stopping to play.

This is far from a perfect episode. The audio is a bit scratchy, my 4-year-old farts in the middle of it and it was completely unscripted but in a way I like that rawness and honest of it and I hope you do too.

Can you do us a favor and share this episode with a busy Mom who might be feeling overwhelmed with life and need a little reminder to put down the technology to play?

Thanks so much and enjoy my conversation with two wild and crazy kids.

  • Hi Everyone

Rebecca here with episode 064 of the HLAW Podcast.

I'm excited to have Marianne Hoffman on the show today.

She is a HLAW Ambassador who recently relocated from Utah to Ecuador all for the sake of adventure.

Marianne has also hiked the Camino, and she's an advocate for living life to the fullest no matter how old (or young) you are.

I hope that you enjoy getting to know Marianne on today's episode.

Can you do us a favor and share this episode with someone who might be craving adventure but struggling with feeling that they might be too old to enjoy it?

Thanks so much and enjoy the show!

  • Hi Everyone

Rebecca here with episode 063 of the HLAW Podcast.

Today we get real on the show.

Jessica, Lorna, Felicia and myself all share experiences where we've felt self-doubt creep into our lives and force us to question whether or not we are smart enough, brave, enough or tough enough to reach our goals.

On the show today I open up about the stress of purchasing an outdoor retail store and the doubts that I have about my ability to turn it into a thriving and successful small business.

Felicia shares her feelings of self-doubt as she chased her dream to become an attorney and how that has helped her cope with her child, who has a terminal illness.

Lorna, who is always our biggest cheerleader, reminds us all to stay focused on our purpose.

And Jessica talks about her divorce, losing her job and working two jobs to put herself through school.

We hope that you enjoy today's (painfully honest) episode.

Can you do us a favor and share this episode with someone you know who might be feeling a little bit of self-doubt right now?

Thanks so much and enjoy the show!
