Malcolm Gladwell is an author, journalist and cultural commentator who was born on the 3rd of September 1963. He grew up and went to school in rural Ontario, reportedly receiving disappointing grades during his schooling. Gladwell decided to pursue advertising as a profession, however, after being rejected by every advertising agency under the sun, he accepted a journalism position at The American Spectator magazine. Between the years 1987 and 1996, he would work as a reporter for the Washington Post, covering business and science. Gladwell interned with the National Journalism Centre in Washington in 1982. He would also graduate with a bachelor's degree in history from Trinity College of the University of Toronto, in 1984. Due to this high performance in his field, Gladwell would eventually become the paper’s bureau chief in New York City. Since working for and leaving the Washington Post in 1996, Gladwell has been a staff writer for the New Yorker. He is also the host of the Revisionist History podcast, and co-founded Pushkin Industries.

Victoria Devine is the founder and host of She’s on the Money, an award-winning retired financial adviser and writer. She has a background in behavioural psychology, an extremely successful podcast, and is this week’s author in focus. Devine continues to help thousands of people change their relationship with money through these various mediums, making hard-to-understand concepts ‘fun, fresh and relatable’. While this book is most definitely targeted towards young women – I believe the notions shared by Victoria are applicable to all. As such, I have selected and shared what I believe to be the most important ideas, concepts, and excerpts.

In his work with various organisations and companies around the world, Sinek noted that some teams trust each other so much that they would put their lives on the line for their peers. While other teams were full of bickering, negative, and under-performing staff. Why? The answer became clear during a conversation with a Marine Corps general. "Officers eat last," he said. What's symbolic in the chow hall is deadly serious on the battlefield: Great leaders sacrifice their own comfort--even their own survival--for the good of those in their care. This book investigates this idea in great detail, exploring the qualities of true leadership, and attributes of effective leaders. For reference, Leaders Eat Last received 4.6 Stars on Amazon.com, and 4.1 stars on Goodreads, being received positively overall.

Dale Carnegie was born in Missouri in 1888, becoming a salesman and aspiring actor after being educated at Warrensburg State Teachers College. In 1936, Dale Carnegie published his renowned book “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” Many of Carnegie's teachings are still applicable today, and his four-part book contains advice on how to create success in business and personal lives. In the many years since, this popular book has sold over 15 million copies and positively impacted countless lives. As noted in the skit from last week’s episode, Dale gave away 90% of his wealth to various causes.

This book is considered cultish by some, and a godsend by many. Just like my skit from last week would suggest, this week we’re covering ‘The Barefoot Investor’, By Scott Pape. This book has sold 2 million copies and can be found in 1 in 20 Aussie households. Scott states that you can get your money sorted in 10 minutes or less per week – as this review will confirm.

This week, we're taking a look at ‘Who Moved My Cheese? An Amazing Way to Deal With Change In Your Work and In Your Life’, By Dr Spencer Johnson. Dr Johnson is also the writer of the best-selling book ‘The One Minute Manager’, which has sold 15 million copies and has been translated into 47 languages, while the book of the week has sold 28 million. Not bad, eh? Anyways, the story of Who Moved My Cheese? Was created by Dr. Johnson to help him deal with a difficult change in his life. It showed him how to take his changing situation seriously, but not take himself too seriously. Additionally, the 28 million people Spencer has reached, have kept their sense of humour, changed, and gained something better for themselves. His readers have ‘reported… improved…careers, businesses, health, and marriages. It’s important to understand that it is not what is in the story of Who Moved My Cheese? but how you interpret it and apply it to your own situation that gives it value’.

Welcome to another episode of WILFRED – what I learned from reading: an educational discourse. Thanks so much for joining me yet again, for our sixth episode. Simon Sinek is a British born American author and inspirational speaker. Described as an unshakable optimist, he is the author of five books, including Start with Why, which was released in 2009 and is today’s book in focus. What follows is a summary of what I have learned from reading Start With Why.

Introducing this week’s author, Mark Manson – he is a superstar blogger, turned author – who brings us this refreshing slap of reality. This book will allow the reader to gain and build “resilience, happiness and freedom”, according to Ryan Holiday, a successful author in his own right. I selected this book for our fifth instalment – as it’s “as much a pat on the back as a slap in the face” (as Mark’s website puts it). Manson was born and raised in the Lone Star state, Texas, and went to college in Boston. Although I’ve never heard him speak, I’m going to assume he sounds like a combination of Ethan Hawke and Marky Mark… oooooooh dreamy. Anyways, what follows is a summary of what I have learned from reading The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life.

The ASX investor education team has been providing the essentials about share investing for over 30 years. The latest edition of Starting Out in Shares the ASX Way is your one-stop resource to understanding what shares are—and how to buy and sell them. This book will allow the reader to build a strong foundation in understanding the basics of investing, prior to doing so themselves. I selected this book for our fourth, as those listening seemed very intrigued by the basics discussed in the second episode, Rich Dad Poor Dad. What follows is a summary of what I have learned from reading Starting Out in Shares.

I thought this book was a sound choice for our third discussion, as it has remained highly regarded throughout the decades, being first published in 1937, during the Great Depression. Amazon states that over 100 million copies have been sold worldwide since it was first published. More than just a personal finance and/or personal development book, Think and Grow Rich focuses on philosophy and the power of the mind, with regards to wealth building. What follows is a summary of what I have learned from reading Think and Grow Rich.
-
I thought this book was fitting for our second discussion, as it is THE most successful book within the Personal Finance genre, with over 32 million copies sold in more than 51 languages, across more than 109 countries. To put that in perspective, that’s 8 times more sales than Atomic Habits, by James Clear – which we reviewed in our first episode. As you already know from the title, it’s Rich Dad Poor Dad, by Robert T. Kiyosaki. What follows is a summary of what I have learned from reading Rich Dad Poor Dad.

James Clear is well respected author and public speaker, who primarily focuses on habits, also speaking on self-awareness, and continuous improvement. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Atomic Habits, selling over 4 million copies. This book embodies both its secondary titles – as once you read it, you will understand how to apply its ‘easy’ and ‘proven’ methods to form good habits and break bad ones. You will also develop an understanding of how tiny changes can compound into remarkable results.
