  • Come celebrate the discovery of LSD with The Kaleidoscopic Boys of Comedy™

On April 19th 79 years ago, Albert Hofmann had the first semi-intentional dose of Lysergic acid diethylamide. He then famously hopped on a bicycle, and the rest is dilated history. Since that bizarre day, it has changed the lives of countless people including Shane and Ramin’s. Oh yeah, it works!  But experiences vary.

Hear how The KBC’s™ experience with acid differs from mushrooms.  Despite such positive impacts on our lives, Shane has learned from his 'A Good Trip Tour' that not everyone has a good trip. We explore some of psychedelics' past and Shane unveils some entheogenic plans for the future.

Take a synesthetic ride on our Betterizer wherever you listen to podcasts or add some visuals with Spotify or YouTube

PS – Afterwards, you can watch Shane and Ramin tell some animated DMT stories on Comedy Central’s ‘Tale’s From The Trip’ and see Ramin in Shane’s documentary ‘Psychonautics’ on Amazon Prime.

If you want to see Shane’s final Head Talks show, it will only be at The MUM Campout Festival in Raleigh Sep 8-11. Sign up for more info on our website.

  • The Kids Of The Boys Of Comedy™ join Shane and Ramin for the first team episode!

Matt McCool (real last name) is the amazing editor of both Mind Under Matter and Here We Are.  If you follow us on Instagram or watch on YT or Spotify, you’ve gotten to see all the fun things that the best editor in podcasting adds to MUM.  What you would never know is all the little stuff that goes into making quality audio and video that no one would ever notice unless he stopped doing it.

Rhianna ‘The Hippie Witch’ Andrews (real hippie witch) has worked with Shane since his Good Trip Tour in 2016.  She has since had to wear SOOOOO MANY HATS.  She has run social media, been a publicist, booked guests, managed tours, been an agent and manager, done endless administrative assistant tasks, a web designer, a straight jacket designer, and way too many other things to list. Now she’s the MUM Mom.

Ramin and Shane generally keep Matt and Rhianna chained in a dungeon, subsiding off their own recycled urine, so we thought it was time we make this hostage video so everyone knows they are still alive.

Generally, our monthly bonus episodes are only available on Patreon but after recording, we realized that we want everyone to meet The KBC™.  So we decided to make this one public so you could get a free taste of some of the fun, experimental shows typically exclusive to our super fans.

  • The Upgraded Boys of Comedy™ reflect on completing their first year of the show.

We bring in the new season with new cameras, lighting, studio upgrades, and new features!

The UBC™ generally think it’s unrealistic to try to go from zero to 60 on any project, but something was special about Mind Under Matter.  Shane, Ramin, Matt and Rhianna went above and beyond to make a nearly complete vision of our show from the beginning and most importantly, we stuck with it.

We’re all so proud of what we accomplished in season one:  We only took one week off, we cranked out exclusive bonus episodes every week, we built a wonderful community, and we even launched the Mind Under Campout for September!

We are infinitely grateful to every single person who has listened, watched, followed, commented, subscribed, reviewed, shared, and supported the show and kept on salivating.  It’s been an absolute dream and we can’t wait to make more MUMories with all of you in season two!

Make sure to check out the free, public bonus episode later this week to meet our editor Matt McCool and MUM Mom Rhianna “The Hippie Witch” for the first time.

  • The Starstruck Boys of Comedy™ welcome the legend as their very first guest on the show.

It’s the last episode of the first season of Mind Under Matter and we wanted to go out with one of the last of a dying breed.

Doug Stanhope built a cult following as one of the most authentic, debaucherous, smartest, edgiest, funniest comics who has ever lived.  Well before podcasting and social media gave comedians more of a chance to take their career into their own hands,  Doug broke the mold.  He basically invented indie stand-up touring.  His DIY career paved the way for Shane and an entire generation of comics who wanted to think outside of the Hollywood model or traditional comedy club box.

His classic special Deadbeat Hero and brave book ‘Digging Up Mother’ are just a taste of his incredible openness that has made him a hero amongst comics, critics, and audiences.  Check out all his specials, books, and podcast at https://www.dougstanhope.com/

FYI, ‘No Refunds’ was the special taping where Shane was in the audience and laughed so hard that Doug had to stop the show.

Leave a comment to let The SBC™ know who you would like us to have on for a special guest in season 2!

  • What would you do if you met your younger self?  If you had to eat the same meal every day, what would it be?  Do you prefer to have more or less knowledge about frightening topics?

This week The Obliging Boys of Comedy™ dive back into the mailbag for a hilarious and thoughtful episode.

This is the second public Q&A episode and it’s safe to say that we will be making this a regular part of the show.  From philosophical, to the pragmatic, to the absurd… our patrons’ and Instagram followers’ questions killed it once again!!

Inspired by a question about live events, we announced a music & talk feature that will be introducing this month.  The OBC™ also introduced our new #2EZTuesdays tradition.

Speaking of live events...  Come meet Shane, Ramin, McCool, Banana and a bunch of other MUMies at our Mind Under Festival in September 9-12 in Raleigh.

Listen to the episode and go to https://mindunderpod.com/ to join the email list for more details.

  • Shane and Ramin have TWO tremendous pieces of news.  Don’t miss this episode as it involves some plans you are going to want to make!

The Charmed Boys of Comedy™ are feeling The Luck of the Irish.

This week we chat about the history of St Paddy’s Day.  We talk about Shane’s Irish ancestry, potato famines, and early American immigrants.  After doing Origins of Halloween (ep 29), Christmas Origins (ep 36), and now exploring St Paddy’s Day as a respite from Lent, we are starting to notice a bit of a theme with the holidays, religions, and traditions during the coldest months.  We speculate on cultural evolution and why we may not need luck and ritual may be seasonal.

After going through some struggles at the end of winter, The CBC™ recently found a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and are feeling festive.  We are sure you will too once you hear what is in store for the coMUMity.

After the show, head to https://mindunderpod.com/pages/festival to get more details about our upcoming event!

  • The Necromancers of Comedy™ use modern alchemy to determine how conspiratorial they are.

This week Shane and Ramin take the 15 question ‘Generic Conspiracist Beliefs Scale’

The scale breaks the score down into five facets:
    - Government Malfeasance: Belief in routine criminal conspiracy within governments
    - Malevolent Global Conspiracies: Belief that small, secret groups exert total control over global events
    - Control of Information (CI): Belief that unethical control and suppression of information by organizations
    - Extraterrestrial Cover-Up: Belief that information about aliens is being concealed from the public
    - Personal Well-being (PW): Concerns over personal health and liberty and the use of mind-control technology

It was such a fun conversation that we made two parts.

Subscribe on your podcast app and listen to the first episode for free.
If you prefer to watch the show, video is now available on Spotify as well as YouTube.

If you enjoy it, the second part is available now on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/63465356

  • The New Tradition Starting Boys of Comedy™ bring in the first inaugural International Mind Under Matter Day on 2/22/22!

What is International MUM Day?  For the first year, we are going to hash it out together.

If you could cobble together a new holiday with your favorite things from other holidays, what would it look like?  What is your ideal festival?  If Shane and Ramin put together a Mind Under Matter camp out next year would you be interested in joining The NTSBC™?  Tune in to find out more.

We talked about all of the amazing artists in the MUM community and decided to add their art to a piece for this week’s episode.  Find the artists we picked on Instagram.  @megindeth @shannonsimonartist and fan art from @karmavoid @inxy.ink @ajimerson

  • The Sexually Selected Valentines of Comedy™ release their second episode on mating behavior.

Last week we went through a bit of the early history of the scientific debates over the evolution of utility versus beauty.  This week we will go through some of the more recent theories about mating behavior to better understand the eruption of various behaviors that have both created and destroyed an uncountable number of species on earth.

We start with a dive underwater to see what odd strategies might arise when there AREN’T plenty of fish in the sea.  Things only get more beautifully bizarre from there.  Nature has a seemingly endless diversity of mating behaviors but are there some underlying patterns?

For example, giving gifts to mates has evolved over and over in multiple species, but you’d probably find some of those gifts to be very different than what you might imagine.

Be our Valentine? Watch on YT or listen on your favorite app.

  • This week The Sexually Selected Boys of Comedy™ get into some of the basics of the evolution of mating.

Charles Darwin’s birthday is just before Valentine’s Day on Feb 12.  We thought it would be fitting to spend the next two weeks talking about how change over time has shaped the tantalizing act of spreading genes.

'On The Origin of Species' put Darwin on the map and introduced the world to evolution. But when it came to mating, things like the peacock just weren’t making sense.  This spawned his controversial book ‘The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex’

The SSBC™ want to you to be our Valentine on YouTube or your favorite app.

  • The Amenable Boys of Comedy™ take questions from the listeners and wow did the MUMies come through with some good ones!

How many hot dogs have you eaten in your life?  Have you ever picked up a hitchhiker?  Do you believe in ghosts?  How would you use a time machine?  Who would you like to talk to from History?

This was the first Q&A episode that we tried and ended up with so many fantastic questions from both Instagram and Patrons that we decided to do two episodes!

  • This week The Interdisciplinary Boys of Comedy™ explore the interconnectedness of the many areas of research needed to understand the puzzling number of factors that lead to any single behavior.

How do we go about understanding even a simple behavior like deciding to listen to this podcast?

First, we would need to know what is going on in the brain moments before you hit play.  Then we would need to consider the hormones floating around your neurological environment that made you inclined to download in response to the stimulus of a new podcast drop.  What was your day, week, month, year like that primed you for listening?

And this is just the very recent past!

What happened in childhood and even the prenatal environment that shaped your excellent taste in podcasts?  How has history shaped your culture and how does that influence your actions?  Finally, we look back through deep time at what selection pressures our ancestors faced to explore genetic predispositions toward entertainment like The IBC™.

14 billion years ago a big bang happened that would eventually lead you to The Mind Under Matter Podcast so don’t wait another moment!  On the chance that free will is a thing, we would be delighted if you would use yours to watch the latest episode on YouTube or listen on your favorite podcast app today.

  • The Multitude Containing Boys of Comedy™ discuss the idea of our subselves.

This week we consider the idea that who we are is made up of several evolved subselves that (often subconsciously) drive behavior and ultimately the inclusive fitness of your genes.  An idea in the book ‘The Rational Animal’ is that there are seven of these subselves: Self-protection, Affiliation, Status, Disease Avoidance, Mate-Acquisition, Mate-Retention, Kin-Care.

From looking at this list you can probably think of a lot of ways these different drives compete with one another.  Many species risk their survival for mating.  We’ve all become very familiar with ways that affiliation can be at odds with disease avoidance.  Can you think of how different subselves may prime different choices?  Can you guess why watching either a scary movie or romantic comedy can prime a different restaurant choice?

Can you think of your own examples of some of these subselves competing with one another or working together?

  • The Music Explorers of Comedy™ share their favorite bands.

At the frequent request of fans, we dedicated a whole episode to talking about some of our favorite music from childhood to today.

We chat about Pink Floyd, Prince, Nirvana, OK Go, Post Modern Jukebox, Of Montreal, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Flaming Lips, The Police, Sting, Devo, CCR, The Talking Heads, Coletrane, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Kimya Dawson, The Avett Brothers, Nine Inch Nails, Knower, Zappa, Weather Report, Mono Neon, The Uncluded, Funkadelic, Vulfpeck, Lionel Ritchie, Bobby McFerrin, Tribe Called Quest, Hieroglyphics, NWA, Eminem, Cameo, The Time and more

We’ll take you on journeys like how Shane went from listening to MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice as a kid; to Biggie as a teen; to Outcast and Eminem in early adulthood; to a more recent path of discovery that took him from Lyrics Born to Deltron 3030 to Aesop Rock to Prof.

Every month The MEC™ like to ask our Patrons to suggest subjects for a full public episode.  Not only do our supporters finance our ability to put out awesome free public content like this, but they help steer the ship with fun suggestions like this.

  • The Working Boys of Comedy™ go job hunting!

We thought we would kick the year off with a job placement survey and explore the paths we may have been suited for had we not been destined to make the world’s greatest podcast.

We honestly were not at all expecting something from The Department of Labor to be so much fun, but this might be the best survey episode yet.  We hope you enjoy Shane’s laugh because it turns out, Ramin is well-suited for a job as a Job Impersonator.

The WBC™ had such a blast that we made a part two for January’s monthly bonus episode.  We’re even going to make it available to the public as a free treat to kick off the year!

  • The Resolute Boys of Comedy™ bring in the New Year and give birth to a new character.

We both appreciate the opportunities for reflection and resets, but why do New Year’s resolutions often fail? What are some SMART goals that give people a better chance of success?

We reflect on the first year of Mind Under Matter and how it has changed some of our work habits.  We reveal some of our plans for 2022 including an app, a book, and a tour!

The RBC™ would like to thank all you MUMmies out there for all the support and interest in 2021!  We are really proud of the show and are so excited to keep expanding the MUMiverse.

  • The Infectious of Boys of Comedy™ dig into the history of pandemics.

Life on earth started billions of years ago.  Life parasitizing other life, evolved shortly after.  And the endless arms between viruses and hosts began.  This mix of battles and cooperation gave rise to much of the rich complexity and diversity of life in addition to some of its biggest threats.  Early sexual reproduction may even have become more successful than cloning in part to escape disease spread.  And now sex is one of the main ways diseases are spread!

And around and around we go…

Modern civilization has created unique opportunities for viruses and modern medicine has created unique defenses.  Once again, the arms race continues.  Meanwhile, while our biology and psychology haven’t changed much since hunter-gathers so we find our intuitions mismatched for our modern world.

From major events like smallpox, to modern scares like Ebola, to an obscure Australian horse disease, many of the common themes have happened again and again.  At a time when many are turning to the news to get daily updates on jargony talking points to argue over, The IBC™ think it’s worthwhile to look back through the last few hundred years of various epidemics to get some perspective.

Catch this episode on YouTube or your favorite app and you will come down with contagious laughter and be super spreading novel insights in no time.

  • The Festive Boys Of Comedy™ get all dressed up in top-of-the-line Christmas outfits to explore the history of the winter solstice.

This holiday season many celebrate some of our most cherished traditions, but where did they come from?  Some historians believe Yuletide was the prequel to Christmas and Santa was played by Odin.  Some of our traditions may even have been influenced by psychedelics.  One thing is clear, there is a rich history of partying very hard during the longest nights of the year.

Kick the Holiday season with the FBC™!  We hope you get some fun conversation topics for holiday parties and maybe even some last-minute gift ideas including some of our favorite board games.

Merry MUMmas to all and a Too Easy New Year!
