  • When you invite friends over for dinner, do you talk about how famous your recipe is, you’d better come for this one exclusive event, don’t get FOMO!

No. That’s not how we talk when we have a relationship with someone. Unfortunately, that’s how a lot of copywriters are taught to write in emails.

I learned about the 9-word email through my mentor, Dean Jackson, and I’ve used it myself and for multiple clients in different variations. Essentially, it’s a short, personal invitation like you would send to a friend. “Hey, I’m making Korean BBQ next weekend. Wanna join?”

It’s so powerful because it’s so simple, but it still needs to fit into your overall email marketing strategy to really be effective. You can use it for sales events, master classes, even as part of the welcome sequence, but you have to have that relationship first.

  • We’ve talked about the email collection phase, then the connection piece, and now it’s time for conversions. Once you’ve engaged your readers and you have a connection with them, you to convert them into sales.

In your emails, you need to really highlight and showcase how you approach what you do. Pull on your expertise to really show how you do your job. If you’re a research specialist, your readers need to know. Spell out the common mistakes and how you solve them. Talk about case studies.

You need as many customer stories as possible to show your readers what is possible for them.

  • Imagine you got a reservation at a new restaurant you’ve been dying to try. You arrive and sit down, but the lights are off, there’s no servers, no host, and it seems like the place is closed.  Without a welcome sequence, newcomers to your email list can feel that way.

Setting up a sequence can still be personal and connecting, and you can use a sequence for a variety of different situations. You can use them for welcomes, launches, evergreen webinars, sales follow-ups, promos, or even if someone has been inactive. Try doing that with social media.

Start with a “Be Our Guest” welcome sequence so you can get to know them, establish a relationship with them, and introduce them to your offer. How else will they know, right?

  • I get asked all the time how to sell without coming off as the annoying sales representative that won’t leave people alone in the store. The difference is that people consciously opted into your offer and if they open up your email, it’s because they chose to.

What’s really important in email is connection. It’s not about the perfect copy that converts 100% of the time. Business owners usually fall into one of 2 buckets: either they send out lots of newsletters and never mention their offers, or they only sell and nothing else. That’s why a strategy is important because neither of those will work the way you want it to.

If you have a complete strategy, you’ll know when to sell and when to connect.

  • It’s mango season in San Francisco! Ask anyone whose culture has mangoes, they’ll all say theirs is the best. In Filipino culture, we love the little manila mangoes because they’re much sweeter and smoother than the larger red mangoes you’re more likely to see in the grocery store.

Just like mangoes, the size of your email list isn’t what’s important. Don’t let the size of your list stop you from emailing and selling in your emails, and don’t stop growing your list with qualified people.

Here are some mistakes I see when people grow their email list:

The freebie doesn’t connect with the offer, or it’s not a smooth connection. Maybe the social content gets a lot of engagement and relates to the opt-in, but the paid offer doesn’t match. There’s no call to action. What do people do next?Relying heavily on organic social media posts to get opt-ins. What’s much more effective is collaborations such as podcast guesting, joint webinars, or public speaking.

  • When I say salad, do you think of a basic, bland bowl of lettuce and carrots with ranch, or do you think of a hearty, nutritious salad with a variety of textures, flavors, and hearty protein? A hella delicious salad will leave you satisfied and nourished.

A hearty email strategy is the same way. There are many different pieces that go into an email strategy.

How are you growing your list? It’s not just about numbers, but also the quality of your subscribers. How are you connecting with people? Don’t use your list just for selling.Crispy, crunchy copy: don’t write it like a brochure, use words that elicit the craving you want them to have.Selling and conversions: in order to make sales from your email, you need to sell in your emails! How does email fit into your overall marketing strategy? One ingredient does not a good salad make.

  • A couple of weeks ago I was making chicken adobo with my sister and cousin and although the recipe is simple, there are lots of different variations. Each ingredient has its role in the flavor profile. It’s the same thing in your email marketing. Your recipe for your email strategy won’t look exactly like someone else’s, and that’s ideal.

Build your marketing strategy understanding the role that your email ingredient plays in the flavor of your brand.

  • I hear a lot of myths about email marketing and frankly, they’re not true! Time to bust those myths!

Myth #1: If you don’t email every day, people will forget about you. Worse, they’ll get mad at you. Truth: If you’ve built relationships, they’ll welcome you back no matter what. I take breaks from emailing my list all the time, but there are systems in place that keep the welcome sequence going.

Myth #2: You have to have a “big enough” list in order to start emailing. What matters is that you’re building a relationship with people who are truly interested in what you do. It matters that your lead magnet is aligned with your offerings, so people coming into your list will actually be interested in what you offer.

Myth #3: Your emails have to be a certain length to be effective. Truth: Say what you need to say, as long or short as it takes.

Myth #4: You have to twist the knife in every email. Now, you do want to connect emotionally and touch on pain points, but let’s not use knives on our customers, okay?

  • Are you worried about coming off as spammy, sleazy, or annoying in your emails? This episode is for you. We’re going to dive into the main reasons people don’t sell consistently in their email lists.

There are plenty of big retailers out there who are being legitimately annoying. They bombard you with catalogs and coupons with no storytelling or connection whatsoever. That’s not us.They’re afraid they have nothing to say - but that’s not true at all! Don’t get hung up on writing the perfect thing, or writing for the trolls, or the fact that you don’t think you’re a writer. The people that opted in are interested in what you have to say.Not knowing what to do or how to get started. Honestly, don’t let the tools block you from getting started.

  • Next time you get stuck in the social media hamster wheel, ask yourself if the vanity metrics like comments and likes are actually translating to sales. What does your sales funnel point to?

Social media is fun, but more engagement doesn’t necessarily mean more sales. The algorithm is always changing and you can’t really measure the right metrics. With email, you can tell which ones actually get more sales, and it’s far less likely to get lost in the algorithm than a social post is.

People are more likely to buy from your emails. They have given you permission to email them and when someone reads an email, they’re not just scrolling by hitting like. They are giving your email their full attention.

Most importantly, you own your email list. If socials go down again, or your page gets shut down for some reason, the platform owns your followers. Your email list is always your email list.

But, why don’t people use their email lists then? Listen in as I talk through those blocks.

  • Think about going out to dinner. The server clears your plates, then presents the dessert menu, even if you didn’t ask for it. Maybe you were thinking of dessert. Maybe you weren’t thinking about dessert, but seeing the menu gave you some ideas. Maybe you weren’t interested.

Emails are like that. You are the server, presenting the menu and tempting your guests. They might be interested, or not, but how will they know what you’re offering without a menu?

Email marketing is a classic, solid strategy that’s sustainable, much more so than cranking out hundreds of reels. It builds relationships with your audience on a deeper level. When someone joins your email list, it’s like they're joining you for a private one-on-one dinner.
