In this episode, we continue my conversation with Dr. Jeff Carmen, psychologist and developer of passive infra-red hemoencephalography (pir HEG) neurofeedback. After talking last episode about medical conditions that mimic psychological symptoms, we focus here on what health care providers can do to better understand symptoms that look "psychological," in order to help our patients.

This episode's guide is Dr. Jeff Carmen, psychologist, developer of passive infra-red hemoencephalography (pir HEG) neurofeedback. We spoke together about pir HEG in a previous episode. In the next two episodes, we talk about a different topic — the ways that medical conditions can mimic psychological symptoms. Anxiety, depression, anger, and changes in mental status often reflect a psychiatric issue. However, there are times that a brain or body event is the culprit. Migraines, seizure disorders, tumors, and long COVID can all trigger psychological changes. In fact, the psychological symptoms may be the first sign that something is wrong. Listen in to learn more about these complex situations.

This episode continues a discussion with Mela Berger, expert somatic clinician. She founded and directs the International Institute of Healing and Cultural Arts, which trains BIPOC clinicians in neuro-somatic integration approaches to treating trauma.

For members of the BIPOC community, trauma is often linked to historic and systemic racism. The health care system does not adequately address this, and there are well-documented disparities in health care availability and quality, based on the cultural background of patients. Mela and the Institute are working to change this by training more BIPOC clinicians and by providing workshops for all clinicians to better connect with their BIPOC patients. Learn more about upcoming events and ways you can support the Institute’s mission.

This episode's guide is Mela Berger, an expert in somatic therapies, and founder and director of the International Institute of Healing and Cultural Arts.

Mela concentrates on work that empowers Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) to overcome trauma. This episode is the first half of a conversation with Mela about the particular traumas facing the BIPOC community, as well as the roll health care providers might play in healing and wellness.

During this conversation, Mela mentions the 1619 Project, an effort from The New York Times Magazine to explore the role slavery has played throughout United States History, and an associated book.

She also recommends the journalist Roland Martin, an editor, writer, host, and contributor focused on the perspective of black Americans.

Our guides today are Angelika and Mitch Sadar, directors of Sadar Psychological and Sports Center, sponsors of NRBS. Mitch also serves as the NRBS President, and Angelika as the Executive Director. For many years, they have worked with clients and trained neurofeedback providers. In today's conversation, they discuss the HBI database, and what it provides beyond qEEG analysis. In addition to maps showing client brain activity compared to the “norm,” the database allows analysis of event related potentials, which show how the brain process visual and auditory information. HBI has also developed measures of attention, vigilance, alertness, internalization/externalization, and emotional regulation.

Join us as they discuss how the HBI database can provide more information for your clients, and for planning interventions. In the next episode, we dive deeper into the database itself, for a wonkier discussion of quantitative brain analysis.

This episode's guide is Andrea Meckley Kutyana. Andrea specializes in applied psychophysiology and neuroscience techniques to assess and train all aspects of human physiology, helping individuals optimize their functioning. She has over 20 years of experience in analyzing EEG, multiple bio- and neurofeedback modalities, neuromodulation, self-regulation, and relaxation techniques. She holds a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialty in Psychophysiology and a Master’s degree in Health Psychology. Andrea is a Licensed Psychological Associate and Health Service Provider in North Carolina, is Board Certified in biofeedback and neurofeedback by BCIA, and as a Quantitative EEG Technologist by IQCB. She trains and mentors neurofeedback and quantitative EEG, has published several book chapters and articles, and presents at scientific meetings.

Dr. Kutyana will discuss Event Related Potentials (ERPs). These are the brain's response to any sort of stimuli. ERPs are well studied in neurology, and tend to follow specific patterns, indicating how the brain processes information. ERPs can help us better understand the struggles some people have understanding some types of information compared to others. For example, some people are better visual than auditory learners. Others have difficulty with multi-sensory information. ERPs provide an even more detailed understanding of some brain functions than EEG or qEEG alone.
