  • Former Unilever CEO Paul Polman Says Aiming for Sustainability Isn’t Enough. The Goal Is Much Higher

    19 Nov 2021

    ---

Paul Polman, who now chairs Imagine, challenges business leaders to ask themselves if they care about the world’s problems — and if they do, how far are they willing to push their companies to help solve them?

HBR editor in chief Adi Ignatius sat down with Polman, whose new book is "Net Positive: How Courageous Companies Thrive By Giving More than They Take" (https://www.amazon.com/Net-Positive-Courageous-Companies-Thrive/dp/1647821304) to talk about:
    • How leaders can drive ambitious sustainability agendas
    • The importance of corporate transparency in building trust
    • How employees can force change from within, as customers and society apply pressure from without.

Aiming for sustainability is not enough, Polman says. “Companies are starting to understand that you need to be restorative, reparative, regenerative.”

This interview is the fourth in a new video series called “The New World of Work,” which will explore how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Each week, Adi will interview a leader on LinkedIn Live — and then share an inside look at those conversations and solicit questions for future discussions in a newsletter just for HBR subscribers. Ever feel like your brain has run out of ideas? Here’s how to break out of a creative rut.

Feeling blocked isn’t just a problem for “creative” types. Many jobs require a healthy dose of fresh thinking and new ideas, and it doesn’t feel good to hit that mental wall. Innovation Editor Christine Liu talks to Sonja Rasula, CEO and founder of Unique Markets, about how to break out of creative ruts, how to approach (and accept) them when they happen, and what you can do to reduce the likelihood of a major creative crisis.

  • Helpful vs. Unhelpful Ways to Give Feedback

    16 May 2024

    ---

We learn most when someone else pays attention to what’s working within us and asks us to cultivate it. So when giving feedback, focus on what someone is doing well, and if you need to give be critical, make sure you’re specific and highlight your experience of the events.

  • The Art of Persuasion Hasn’t Changed in 2,000 Years

    9 Mar 2022

    ---

To successfully sell your next idea, try using these five rhetorical devices that Aristotle identified in your next speech or presentation.

00:00 More than 2,000 years ago Aristotle outlined a formula on how to become a master of persuasion
    00:42 Aristotle's five rhetorical devices
    00:57 Ethos (Character)
    01:48 Logos (Reason)
    02:08 Pathos (Emotion()
    02:50 Metaphor
    03:27 Brevity

More than 2,000 years ago Aristotle outlined a formula on how to become a master of persuasion in his work Rhetoric. The first device is ethos or “character.” In order for your audience to trust you, start your talk by establishing your credibility. Then, make a logical appeal to reason, or “logos.” Use data, evidence, and facts to support your pitch. The third device, and perhaps the most important, is “pathos,” or emotion. People are moved to action by how a speaker makes them feel. Aristotle believed the best way to transfer emotion from one person to another is through storytelling. The more personal your content is the more your audience will feel connected to you and your idea.

Based on the HBR article by Carmine Gallo: The Art of Persuasion Hasn’t Changed in 2,000 Years (https://hbr.org/2019/07/the-art-of-persuasion-hasnt-changed-in-2000-years).

  • How To Be Less Distracted at Work – and in Life | HBR IdeaCast

    22 Mar 2023

    ---

Nir Eyal, an expert on technology and psychology, says that we all need to learn to be less distracted into activities that don’t help us achieve what we want to each day. Unwelcome behaviors can range from social media scrolling and bingeing on YouTube videos to chatting with colleagues or answering non-urgent emails. To break these habits, we start by recognizing that it is often our own emotions, not our devices, that distract us. We must then recognize the difference between traction (values-aligned work or leisure) and distraction (not) and make time in our schedules for more of the former. Eyal also has tips for protecting ourselves from the external distractions that do come at us and tools to force us to focus on bigger-picture goals. He is the author of the book Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life (https://www.amazon.com/Indistractable-Control-Your-Attention-Choose/dp/194883653X).

  • U.S. Soccer's Gregg Berhalter on Rebuilding Trust in the Wake of Controversy

    6 Jan 2023

    ---

Gregg Berhalter coached the U.S. men's soccer team in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they achieved a memorable victory over Iran before losing to the Netherlands. Berhalter, who was a professional soccer player himself for 17 years, has coached in Europe and the U.S., and for the past four years, he’s been the head coach of the U.S. national team.

In the past couple of weeks, he's been under another kind of spotlight. Berhalter's decision to limit the playing time of one of his young players prompted the player's parents to threaten to expose an incident from more than three decades ago in which Berhalter got into a physical fight with his girlfriend at the time, who later become his wife. Berhalter and his wife issued a statement in which he expressed his regret for his action at the time and his cooperation with a U.S. Soccer investigation into the matter.

Berhalter sat down with HBR editor in chief Adi Ignatius for our video series “The New World of Work.” In addition to the controversy, he discussed:
    • Leadership lessons he’s learned through coaching teams of highly competitive individuals who may not be used to working together and who are vying for limited starting positions.
    • How players can stay focused amidst the noise and distractions that come with playing sports at such a high level. (It starts by not looking for validation on social media.)
    • The differences between talent and character—and how to capitalize on both.

This interview part of a series called “The New World of Work,” which explores how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Each week, Adi will interview a leader on LinkedIn Live — and then share an inside look at those conversations and solicit questions for future discussions in a newsletter just for HBR subscribers. • How to Be Ready for a Layoff, Even if Your Job Feels Secure for Now | Christine vs. Work

    10 Nov 2020

It never hurts to be prepared for the worst. Especially when it comes to losing your job.

If you ever get laid off, as opposed to fired, it’s never your fault. Layoffs are financial decisions made by companies, and can happen at any time. The transition is never easy, but preparing responsibly, even if your job feels secure, can make this process less painful if and when it comes up. What are steps you can take today to prepare?

We spoke to executive career transition coach Susan Peppercorn about how to prepare for a layoff. Her top four pieces of advice are essential bedrocks of individual career management: keep track of your accomplishments, nurture your network, back up important information, and be on top of your savings (give yourself a financial runway). You want these to become everyday habits for the long term.

Most of us probably don’t think too hard about whiteboards. Whether it’s the traditional dry-erase surface or a digital collaboration workspace, we typically use whiteboards in meetings for brainstorming sessions, jotting down diagrams, or posting sticky notes with questions and ideas. But is there a better way to use whiteboards? Why do whiteboards matter, and are there techniques to unlock their full potential? At the end of the day, are we unwittingly overlooking this everyday workplace resource?

Innovation Editor Christine Liu seeks answers from Jake Knapp, the inventor of the Design Sprint and the author of Sprint: How to Solve Big Problems and Test New Ideas in Just Five Days and Make Time: How to Focus on What Matters Every Day. • Procter & Gamble’s Lean Innovation Transformation | Cold Call

    7 Jun 2023

    ---

Whenโ€ฏKathy Fishโ€ฏbecame Procter & Gamble’s Chief Research, Development & Innovation Officer in 2014, she was concerned that the world’s leading consumer packaged goods company had lost its capability to produce a steady stream of disruptive innovations. In addition, intensifying competition from direct-to-consumer companies convinced Fish that P&G needed to renew its value proposition to make all aspects of the consumer experience “irresistibly superior.” But making this change would require wholesale transformation from within. Can Fish bring lean innovation to scale at Procter & Gamble?

Harvard Business School assistant professor Emily Truelove discusses the challenges of bringing this established company back to an innovative mindset in her case, “Kathy Fish at Procter & Gamble: Navigating Industry Disruption by Disrupting from Within.” (https://store.hbr.org/product/kathy-fish-at-procter-gamble-navigating-industry-disruption-by-disrupting-from-within/421012?sku=421012-PDF-ENG)
