  • Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, in which I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

This episode offers something a little different - a snapshot of the world of songwriters and an insight into an international music competition. The International Songwriting Competition is an annual song contest that offers aspiring and established songwriters to have their songs heard in a professional international arena. Joe explains something of the aims and mechanics of the competition.

I'm delighted that Harmonious World has become one of the ISC's industry partners.

The track at the start and end of this conversation is the Harmonious World theme tune, performed by pianist and composer Joe English.

  • Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, in which I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

I can scarcely believe that I have reached 250 episodes (not my 250th guest, as there have been some duplications) but I am delighted that this special edition features guitarist, composer and singer Rosie Frater-Taylor.

I've seen and heard Rosie several times through 2024 and it was a delight that we finally got to chat about her background and her music, especially her latest album, Featherweight.

Please do sign up to Rosie's email newsletter to find out where you can hear her in 2025 - you won't be disappointed.

Thanks to Rosie for allowing me to play clips of a couple of her tracks from the Featherweight Deluxe version alongside our conversation.

  • Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, in which I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

This conversation took place between sets at Cambridge Jazz Festival a couple of weeks ago, when Dennis Rollins was working as composer, conductor and artistic director with the Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra. It was a real pleasure to chat with Dennis and I hope we can fit in a more lengthy conversation in the near future.

His passion for education knows no bounds, and you can experience his wisdom wherever you are in the world at funkytrombone.com

Thanks to Dennis for allowing me to play clips of a couple of his tracks alongside our conversation.

With apologies for the background noise (including the sound-checking of Roberto's piano while we chatted a few feet away) this is the live chat I had with Cuban jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca. It was a real pleasure to chat with hijm and then to hear him play as part of London Jazz Festival.

It was a joy to chat with pianist Joel Lyssarides. His latest album is Arcs and Rivers, in collaboration with bouzouki player Georgios Prokopiou: as usual, this is a classy album from ACT Music. You can read my review of Arcs and Rivers here.

  • Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, in which I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

Although I don't usually mention Christmas until December, there are a couple of great albums out that will help us all get into the spirit of the season. My first features an old friend, trombonist, singer and composer Ashley Slater. His album Merry Jazzmas is out now and you can read my review of it here.

This is the second appearance for Ashley - the first was way back in April 2021 on episode 42.

Thanks to Ashley for letting me play tracks from the album alongside our conversation and I hope you enjoy listening to them.

  • Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, in which I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

This episode features an extended conversation with my dear friend Michael Shapiro, who I wouldn't know if it wasn't for an introduction from Crossover Media's Amanda back at the start of Harmonious World. As well as our previous two interviews in 2020 and 2021, I have spent time with Michael in Milan (where his Frankenstein score was performed) and several times in London. His musical passion, intellect and wit come across - I hope - in this latest episode.

Alongside our conversation, you can hear extracts from Michael's flute concerto In The Light Of The Sun , performed by my previous guest Stathis Karapanos.

For this episode, I interviewed bass player and composer Matt Booth. I spoke to Matt as part of Extended Trio in 2022 for episode 120 and it was good to chat with him this time about his own album of tracks, many of which were written during lockdown.

For this episode, I interviewed Grammy-winning guitarist Sharon Isbin for the second time. The first was way back in August 2020, and she's been busy since then, creating wonderful music and working tirelessly with the Aspen Music Festival, which this year celebrated its 75th anniversary.

Sharon shared with me her album Live in Aspen, featuring her guitar alongside legendary sarod masters Amjad Ali Khan, Amman and Ayaan Ali Bangash, together with tabla virtuoso Amit Kavthekar. Alongside our conversation, you can hear extracts from the tracks from this fabulous album.

  • Welcome to the trailer for season 18 of Harmonious World, in which I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

For those of you who don’t know who I am, my name is Hilary Seabrook and I’m a writer, podcaster and musician (with a little teaching thrown in).

You can find out more about me on my blog - just search for Hilary Seabrook blog and you’ll find it, plus there’s a link in the show notes. You will also find there lots of album and gig reviews

Season 17 was another great one, and you can see a summary of it on my blog. In fact, you can see summaries of all seasons, so it’s easier to catch up with any of the episodes you may have missed.

Season 18 promises to deliver lots more great interviews with extraordinary musicians, with some already recorded and a few more amazing guests scheduled in for the next couple of months.

Thanks once again to Joe English for my theme tune, which you can hear now.

If you want to know the names of guests in advance and suggest some questions, you’ll need to subscribe! Another subscriber bonus is a cute key ring and maybe even a pen.
