STORY 1: Gwinnett preparing to open Eastern Regional Greenway Trail
Residents of eastern Gwinnett County are anticipating the opening of the Eastern Regional Greenway Trail, part of a larger infrastructure project. Jackson Fenchak, a rising junior at Brookwood High School, achieved a significant milestone by winning his age group at the Lauren’s Run 5K, completing the race in 23 minutes and 45 seconds. This victory holds special meaning as Jackson battled Stage IV neuroblastoma as an infant and later overcame congenital vertical talus. Supported by CURE Childhood Cancer throughout his journey, Jackson's family now gives back by raising funds and participating in events. Despite challenges, including multiple surgeries, Jackson excels in cross country, track, and wrestling. He approaches each day with gratitude, seeing every opportunity to compete as a gift.
STORY 3: A Duluth Man Drowned in South Carolina Last Week
Last week, 61-year-old Duluth resident Kemal Alic tragically drowned in the Atlantic Ocean near Myrtle Beach, according to reports from South Carolina. The Horry County Coroner’s Office determined Alic’s death was due to drowning, with asphyxiation cited just before 1 p.m. on July 3. Alic, a Bosnian war veteran who had resettled in the U.S., leaves behind a wife and three children. A GoFundMe campaign started by his friend, Hardit Singh, aims to support Alic's family during this difficult time, highlighting Alic’s dedication as a hard worker and his pursuit of opportunities in America. The campaign has raised $1,721 of its $10,000 goal as of Tuesday afternoon.

The Snellville Tag Office in Gwinnett County will close temporarily from July 24 to July 29 due to repairs from a water main break. Tax Commissioner Denise Mitchell announced residents can use other tag offices in Lawrenceville, North Gwinnett, Norcross, and Peachtree Corners during this period. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays. Tag renewal services are also available at 12 kiosks throughout the county, including one at Publix in Snellville, with fees applicable and card payments accepted. For assistance, residents can contact the Tax Commissioner’s Office DMV Customer Service Line or email [email protected].
STORY 5: With Animal Welfare Center Reaching Capacity, Gwinnett Offering Free Adoptions
Gwinnett County's Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Center faces critical capacity, prompting a special adoption initiative called "12 Strays of Christmas in July." STORY 2: Four Lake Lanier Boaters Hospitalized After Fourth of July Incidents
On July Fourth, Lake Lanier saw two boating incidents, the only ones reported statewide in Georgia. The first occurred at Buford Dam Park when two rented personal watercraft collided, resulting in injuries to three individuals who were hospitalized with lacerations, abrasions, and fractures. The operator deemed at fault fled the scene and remains at large. The second incident occurred at Burton Mill Park, involving a person jumping into shallow water from a vessel, resulting in a fractured rib and hospitalization. Additionally, DNR's Law Enforcement Division issued three boating under the influence citations in the Gainesville region, which covers Lakes Lanier and Hartwell.

A viral video on social media this week showed people inside a Budget Rental moving van, sparking concerns of human trafficking as the original poster claimed they were tied up. The incident occurred on Interstate 85 north from midtown Atlanta until Gwinnett police intervened. However, Gwinnett County Police Sergeant Collin Flynn clarified that the individuals were not trafficking victims but were two families relocating with their belongings. They were healthy and not in distress, heading from Alabama to Maryland for new job opportunities. Despite no evidence of trafficking, police cited the driver for Georgia's seat belt law violation as the occupants were riding in the van without seat belts. The group was safely dropped off to find an alternate means to continue their journey to Maryland.
STORY 2: Ousted Gwinnett School Board Member Criticizes Runoff System
Karen Watkins, Vice Chairman of the Gwinnett County school board, has decided not to seek a recount after narrowly losing to Rachel Stone in last week's runoff election. Stone won by 17 votes, securing less than a 0.5% margin over Watkins. Although Watkins could have requested a recount under state law, she opted not to, criticizing Georgia's runoff election system instead. Watkins highlighted concerns that requiring candidates to surpass 50% of the vote in a runoff can suppress voter turnout and dilute the impact of voters. In the primary election, Watkins led with 41.8% of the vote, leading to the runoff with Stone who garnered 30.6%. The runoff saw significantly lower turnout compared to the primary, with only 3,719 votes cast. Watkins' campaign labeled the runoff system as voter suppression, emphasizing its costliness and potential to diminish voter participation.
STORY 3: Biden, Trump swap barbs in no-holds barred debate
In Atlanta, a 90-minute presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, moderated by CNN with no live audience, aimed for civility with microphones turned off when not speaking. Despite this, both candidates traded accusations, blaming each other for inflation and trading personal attacks. Trump faced legal challenges, including indictments in Georgia and a recent New York conviction. He attributed these to Biden targeting him politically. Biden criticized Trump's inaction during the Capitol riot and highlighted Trump's legal troubles and personal scandals. The origin of these snails in Lake Lanier remains uncertain, but possibilities include their sale in food markets and ownership as pets, despite recent regulations against possessing them in Georgia. These snails pose ecological threats by displacing native species and economic risks by damaging boats and equipment, potentially hindering water access. DNR urges the public, especially anglers and boaters, to prevent further spread by ensuring boats and equipment are clean and by not releasing non-native species into Georgia's waters.
STORY 2: Gwinnett Schools Budget Includes Higher Raises for Employees
Gwinnett County Public Schools recently approved a $3.2 billion budget for fiscal year 2025, which includes substantial increases in teacher salaries beyond initial expectations. Originally slated for a $3,000 raise, teachers will now receive $4,000, reflecting additional state funding and community feedback. The budget also boosts the cost-of-living adjustment for other employees from 4% to 4.25%. This $32 million in new funding also supports initiatives like more instructional coaches, SAT For All program funding, graduation coaches, and enhanced resources for multilingual and ESOL programs. Additionally, the district plans a slight reduction in its property tax millage rate, pending public input at hearings scheduled for July.

The Budweiser Clydesdales, symbols of American tradition, will be in Norcross on July 5th. Their visit supports Folds of Honor, a charity providing educational scholarships to families of fallen service members. Luke Vasquez, a recent graduate of Mountain View High School in Buford, has been awarded a prestigious Gates Scholarship from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Out of over 50,000 applicants nationwide, Vasquez was selected as one of 750 Gates Scholars. This scholarship will cover the cost of his undergraduate education at the University of Georgia, ensuring he graduates debt-free. Vasquez plans to study international affairs with aspirations of becoming an immigration attorney, inspired by his family's experiences with immigration. Beyond the Gates Scholarship, Vasquez has received numerous other honors and scholarships, reflecting his academic and extracurricular achievements in wrestling and community service.

Georgia Power has expanded its "Income-Qualified Senior Discount" program to include more customers with limited incomes, effective since May 1 following approval by the Georgia Public Service Commission in December 2023. During the operation, police conducted 485 traffic stops, issuing 658 citations, including charges for DUI and reckless driving.

Joseph Grier, a Stone Mountain man, faces numerous charges, including murder, after hijacking a Ride Gwinnett bus in Atlanta. STORY 3: Composting Partnership in Gwinnett Schools Keeps Food Waste Out of Landfills
Third-grader Maya Terrazas from Baggett Elementary School has been composting at home for a year, and recently, she joined the school's Compost Connectors group, which diverts food waste from lunches to make compost for gardens. The program, part of a partnership between the Food Well Alliance and local schools, educates students on sustainability. Baggett, along with other Gwinnett schools, saw over 2,700 pounds of food waste diverted to composting. While fire ants may prey on certain pests, they're generally unwelcome guests in our yards. Chemical treatments, like baits and pesticidal dusts, can be effective but require careful application and consideration of environmental impact. Frequent mowing can disrupt their colonies, encouraging relocation. Additionally, encouraging competition from other ant species may help control fire ant populations. Proper identification and persistence are key in managing these formidable pests, whose sting packs a serious punch.
STORY 7: Ex-Cop Convicted of Kidnapping, Murdering Norcross Teen
Former Doraville Police Officer Miles Bryant has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the kidnapping and murder of 16-year-old Susana Morales from Norcross nearly two years ago. A jury found Bryant guilty of malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping, and false report of a crime charges, though he was acquitted of attempted rape. Morales' sister expressed gratitude for the verdict, acknowledging that nothing can bring Susana back. Judge Tamela Adkins imposed the life sentence, emphasizing the severity of Bryant's actions, especially given his former law enforcement role. Bryant apologized to Morales' family before sentencing. The investigation relied on evidence including cell phone data and the recovery of Bryant's handgun near Morales' remains.

A woman was fatally shot Saturday night at a shopping center in Snellville. Gwinnett Police officers responded to the incident at 3541 Stone Mountain Highway around 7:30 p.m. and found the suspect being subdued by witnesses. The suspect was arrested, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved or a motive, but it may be domestic-related. The suspect is being questioned. Police urge anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers, referencing Case No. 24-0042372.
STORY 2: New Lawsuits Filed to stop Mulberry city council elections
Stephen Hughes is trying to stop the new city of Mulberry's council elections following his unsuccessful attempt to block the city's creation. Gwinnett County's school board has appointed new principals for Creekland Middle School and Duluth High School. Tyese M. Scott, former principal of McKendree Elementary School, will replace the retiring Kimberly Gillette at Creekland Middle. Cynthia "Cindy" A. Kinchen, previously principal at Duluth Middle School, will take over from Eric Davidson, who has been promoted, at Duluth High. Scott has 29 years in education, including 16 in Gwinnett, while Kinchen has an 18-year career within Gwinnett County Public Schools. Both bring extensive experience and advanced degrees in education to their new roles.

STORY 1: Buford Hit by Third Earthquake In Less Than Three Days
Buford experienced its third earthquake in 72 hours, with a magnitude 2.3 quake occurring on Sunday night near Lake Lanier. This follows a magnitude 2.5 quake on Thursday and a magnitude 2.1 quake early Friday. Sunday's earthquake was the shallowest, at 1.4 miles deep, near Buford Dam Road and Old Shadburn Ferry Road. The previous quakes occurred at depths of 2.5 and 5.2 miles. The U.S. Geological Survey reported 115 people felt Sunday's quake, mostly in Buford and Sugar Hill, while 163 people felt Thursday's quake, with reports from as far as Peachtree Corners.
STORY 2: ARRESTED: 61-Year-Old Woman Accused of Setting Norcross Homes on Fire
Hong T. Huynh, 61, was arrested by Dunwoody police on Friday for allegedly setting two homes on fire in Norcross on June 1. The fires, which occurred 20 minutes apart on Buckingham Court and Turners Ridge Drive, displaced ten people, including children, and injured one person. Huynh is currently held without bond in DeKalb County Jail. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents. Authorities are seeking additional information about the fires from the public.
STORY 3: Rotary Club of Duluth Car Show Set for June 15
The Rotary Club of Duluth Car Show, co-hosted with the City of Duluth Downtown Development Authority, will take place on June 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in historic downtown Duluth. The event, which is free and family-friendly, will feature a variety of cars displayed in the lot behind the Red Clay Theatre. Attendees can vote for their favorite car, with multiple trophies awarded. Proceeds will benefit Operation One Voice, a nonprofit supporting the families of fallen soldiers and police officers. STORY 4: Gwinnett County Police are getting a new headquarters
Gwinnett County officials have approved a $5.8 million contract with Precision Planning Inc. to design and provide construction administration services for a new Gwinnett Police Department Headquarters facility. The current headquarters, built in 1977 and expanded in 1988, no longer meets the department's needs. The new facility, expected to be completed in 2026, will consolidate off-site police teams and include a parking deck. The site, located at 800 Hi Hope Road, will replace the existing headquarters and E911 facilities. Funding for the project comes from the 2023 SPLOST Program.

Gwinnett County deputies arrested Alexis Coria, a 27-year-old alleged Surenos gang member from Lawrenceville, for the murder of Kevin Valdez in a Lilburn strip mall parking lot on May 19. Coria faces charges of malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit tracked Coria to Acworth, where he was arrested without incident after being monitored leaving an address in Dunwoody. Valdez was found dead in his car at 880 Indian Trail Lilburn Road. The motive remains unclear, though the incident began between Burns Road and Dickens Road.
STORY 2: Seven men face RICO charges for allegedly breaking into 492 cars in Gwinnett
A joint operation involving multiple law enforcement agencies and the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office resulted in the indictment of seven men on racketeering charges for breaking into 492 cars and stealing some of them over 17 months. The suspects, including residents from East Point, Fairburn, and Conley, face RICO charges. The investigation, starting in November 2022, involved fingerprint analysis, DNA evidence, surveillance videos, and cell phone data. Five suspects have been arrested, while two remain at large. Reed, who went by "Sway Huncho," forced her into sex work, subjected her to beatings, and deprived her of basic needs. She managed to call 911 from a hotel when Reed left her alone, leading to his arrest and subsequent 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking. Her case highlights the pervasive issue of sex trafficking in Georgia, affecting people in various settings, including hotels and private homes, with a high incidence in areas like Gwinnett County.
STORY 3: Sex Trafficking Survivors Target Hotels Through Lawsuits
Survivors of sex trafficking have been suing hotels for allowing their exploitation. Plaintiffs claim hotels ignored obvious signs of trafficking, like high visitor rates and excessive condom use, and sometimes even provided drug paraphernalia. Lawyers Jonathan Tonge and Pat McDonough, specializing in such cases, aim to make ignoring trafficking unprofitable for hotels. They’ve settled over 50 cases, with 20 ongoing. Legislative changes, like improved "rape shield" laws and a "lookback" period for civil suits, could help survivors. Post-settlement, attorneys like Cheryl Richardson manage survivors' finances to protect them from exploitation and ensure long-term stability.

Since then, A.L. has rebuilt her life, found employment, and is raising her son. She lives in another state, free from drugs, and is considering studying criminal justice. Her story underscores the ongoing efforts and challenges in combating sex trafficking and supporting survivors.
STORY 5: Former Brookwood Swimmer, SwimAtlanta Coach to Compete on ‘The Bachelorette’
Thomas Nguyen, a 31-year-old from Gwinnett and Brookwood High grad, is one of 25 men competing on the 21st season of "The Bachelorette," starring Jenn Tran. Nguyen, who previously swam professionally for the Vietnamese National Team and reached NCAA Division II finals in college, now works as a retirement advisor. Known as Thomas N. from Tucker on the show, he plans to impress Tran with his Vietnamese cooking skills and romantic gestures. Nguyen hopes to find a love as strong as his parents' and is eager to start a family. The season premieres on July 8 on ABC and Hulu.

Jacob Johnston, an 18-year-old driver, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and reckless conduct for the death of 4-year-old Abigail Hernandez, who was struck while walking with her family in the Mall of Georgia's parking lot on March 10. Johnston was booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center on Friday and released 16 hours later on a $5,900 bond. Although police initially deemed the incident accidental, the District Attorney’s Office decided to press charges. Hernandez's father and sister survived the accident. A court hearing for Johnston has not yet been scheduled.

Gwinnett Technical College’s Respiratory Care program has been recognized for its excellence, boasting an 11-year streak of 100% pass rates on the national credentialing exam. STORY 6: Early menopause linked to breast cancer in women

The research suggests relatives of these women also have increased cancer risks, including breast, prostate, and colon cancers. The girl's mother reported her missing around 11:40 a.m. after an argument, discovering she had left their Lawrenceville home without shoes. The helicopter quickly located the girl, and officers on the ground, guided by Corporal Hanna, found her upset but safe on a sidewalk. Hanna calmed the girl and safely returned her home. The case showcased the police department's coordinated efforts and crisis training.
STORY 2: ERROR: Computer Glitch Sends Tax Appeal Hearings Email to Many Gwinnettians
On Memorial Day, many Gwinnett County homeowners received erroneous emails about participating in Board of Equalization appeal hearings due to a computer glitch. The emails, sent between 10:42 and 11:43 a.m., were caused by a coding error and affected "several thousand" homeowners. The emails, which included WebEx links for hearings, caused confusion and concerns about potential scams. Arefeen Chowdhury, a candidate for Gwinnett tax commissioner, demanded answers. The county sent a follow-up email explaining the mistake and has taken steps to correct the issue and prevent future occurrences.
STORY 3: Marine From Buford Carries Honor And Remember Flag at Virginia Run For The Fallen Memorial Run
On May 4, U.S. Marines with the Security Battalion participated in the 12th Annual Virginia Run for the Fallen at Marine Corps Base Quantico, running with the American and Honor and Remember flags. The event, involving Gold Star families and veterans, is part of a four-day, 250-mile tribute to honor Virginia service members who died during the War on Terror. Lance Cpl. Jacob Shelton and Cpl. STORY 1: Prosecutors: Robbery Gone Wrong Ended in Murder
A Norcross man and a Fayetteville man are set to be sentenced for the 2020 murder of Malik Werts during a home invasion in Norcross. Corey Arnell Myart, 24, was convicted of felony murder, home invasion, and aggravated assault. Gabriel Morales, 23, was found guilty of felony murder and aggravated assault. They face potential life sentences. The crime occurred after Myart and Morales targeted Werts' apartment, suspecting large amounts of marijuana. They invaded the apartment, and during the robbery, Werts was shot. Myart's younger brother, Cobe Myart, is also charged and awaiting trial.
STORY 2: SUV Crashes into Lawrenceville Burger King
An SUV crashed into a Burger King in Lawrenceville on Tuesday, causing minor injuries to the driver and several patrons inside. The incident occurred at 445 Grayson Highway. The driver was transported to the hospital and will be charged with reckless driving and other traffic offenses. The restaurant is currently closed. No further details on the cause of the accident were provided.
STORY 3: Flowery Branch Man Raped Gwinnett Teen, Then Stabbed Her 86 Times
Zachary Iona, a 22-year-old from Flowery Branch, was sentenced to 30 years in prison and must register as a sex offender for raping and stabbing a 15-year-old girl he met on Snapchat. Iona pled guilty to multiple charges, including rape and aggravated assault. He attacked the girl at her Hoschton home in 2022, stabbing her 86 times. The victim survived after extensive surgeries and physical therapy. Gwinnett DA Patsy Austin Gatson highlighted the dangers of social media through this case. Police identified Iona from a Snapchat photo.

STORY 5: 7 Gwinnett Seniors Earn Gates Scholarships
Seven recent graduates from Gwinnett County Public Schools have been awarded the Gates Scholarship, granting them a free college education. These students, selected from a nationwide pool of 300, include Malik Bailey, Sophia Rodriguez, Victor Osele, Hashim Abdullahi, Braylon Kelley, Georges Djrogbo, and Kevin Nhan. The Gates Scholarship, funded by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, covers all college expenses not already accounted for by other financial aid or family contributions. Beyond financial support, the scholarship offers comprehensive services such as career guidance, mentoring, leadership development, and wellness support. Recipients are chosen based on academic achievement, leadership skills, and personal success. This prestigious scholarship aims to empower high-potential, low-income minority students to excel academically, graduate college, and become leaders in their communities.
