There are things that you may have thought were the primary reasons or benefits of getting into the gun dog world but, come to find out, there are other aspects that start to present themselves that make you realize theres a lot more to it. Perhaps its not all about the birds. Perhaps its not even just about the dog. Perhaps its about certain relationships, traditions, and family values that start to stand above all else.
The last episode recorded in the Eukanuba booth at Pheasant Fest is with the amazing family from Three Arrows Hunting Preserve. Parents Ben and Diane join me with two of their adult children Elizabeth and James to try and put into words exactly what this lifestyle has meant to them as a family. From the invaluable life lessons taught to the kids through hard work and stewarding the land, to what its like owning and operating a multi-generational farm!
Brittanys, breeding, and the farm!
Entering into the Hunt Smith world
What is the best way to go about getting your kids involved?
"Never settle!"
What has the land meant to the family over the years?
Chase your dreams!
The preserve is setup more for dog training than just profit
Hunting wild birds compared to the preserve birds
Why the Brittany?
Get the kids out into nature!

There have been countless guests and topics covered in episodes throughout the years that are truly invaluable and worth revisiting. Going through some of the back catalog and re-listening to some of the older episodes, I was honestly surprised at some of the information and details I have forgotten myself over the years. I wanted to try and highlight some of these guests and topics so I am going through and scrubbing some of the episodes and "remastering" them. Im cutting out any of the fluff such as the intros or outros so you hear just the meat and potatoes of these conversations. This should allow you to revisit these older episodes without having to sit through anything that happens to no longer be timely or applicable to the topic.
This time we revisit Episode 138 originally released on May 22, 2022 with Mark Fulmer of Sarahsetter Kennels where we broke down his decades long experience training dogs with the help of quail Johnny Houses!

How far do the birds range and still return?
Planting birds as opposed to releasing birds
Training means controlling the outcome
Johnny House dimensions and specs
Quail vs Chukar
Flooring and wood shavings vs hemp
The importance of a roof overhang
Routine maintenance requirements
Supplementing and replacing birds
Mark's training process
The birth of place boards
Simulating a covey in the training field

I'm revisiting Ep. 101 Tracking Principles which was originally released on 7/12/21. Jay Crafter of Invictus K9 and Grayson Guyer of Lost Highway Kennels joined me after a tracking clinic they put on to discuss the principles and foundations of a quality tracking dog. It goes beyond just tracking blood! This subject also transcends just training a tracking dog as theres a ton of information in this one in regards to building drive and desire in any type of dog! This is 100% applicable to our bird dogs!
Foundations of tracking
Selecting your new tracking dog
The lowest value reinforcer for the greatest change of behavior
Figuring out your dog's drive!
Restraint to create value in the reward by manipulating back pressure
Tracking vs air scenting
How to release the dog for a confident start
Changes of behavior (COB) and rewarding the momentum
Training in low odor makes tracking blood easy!
Making the track harder with age and accessory odors
Tracking is tracking regardless of surfaces
Running parallel rather than right on top
Actually setup for distractions!
Versatility is always a sacrifice
Principles, routines, and trusting the dog!

Its officially spring time which means its that time of year to really dig in on the training plan for the year. When trying to figure out where to go and how to get there, be sure to use the right balance. Ethan Pippitt of Standing Stone Kennels returns this week to chat about finding the right balance in your training.
A dog's experience moves a dog forward more so than a dog's age
Everything in training is good. In moderation.

In the first version of the new "recall" episodes, Im revisiting Ep. 85 The Dog Nose Best with Tom Brownlee which was originally released on 3/15/21. In the episode we dive into how our dog's noses work along with a bit of scent theory and how it behaves in different situations. This is not only applicable in hunting scenarios but, I would argue, even more important to consider when setting up your training scenarios in the off season.
VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and how a dog's nose physically works
Physical characteristics for a dog that helps them smell better?
Impossible to smell when panting
Environment factors and impacts on scent: temperature, thermals, humidity, wind speed, green grass, water
How to train a dog to use it's nose more
What exactly are they smelling when tracking an animal?
