On our final episode of our More Women More Miles series we welcome back coach Kristen Legan to walk us through how to not mess up your final two weeks of race prep before UNBOUND. We cover everything from taper workouts to race week nutrition tips, and even how to lay out expectations for your friends and family for your race week. Kristen also goes over her suggestions on logistics prep for race day, with things like calculating food and hydration needs and making sure your crew is prepared with anything you may need at your checkpoint stops. If you are heading to Emporia there will be no shortage of fun activities and events to take part in, however you’ll want to make sure you don’t burn yourself out before you actually hit the start line. Kristen gives us a few tips on how to balance maximizing your fun social time at the expo with preparing yourself for race day to show up fresh and ready. Kristi and Kristen also go over an in-depth course preview for the 200 and 100 mile courses, and give their advice on managing adverse conditions like heat and mud.

On this week’s show we are joined by runner-turned-cyclist Caroline Wreszin. The LA based athlete got started on the bike in highschool when an injury sidelined her from running, and she was hooked from the first ride. As a self described competitor, Caroline found her way into gravel racing, and despite her first race being icy cold, she hasn’t looked back. Last year Caroline built up her own privateer program and focussed mainly on gravel racing. This year she has her eyes set on some big goals for LA 2028, and has shifted her focus onto the road. Caroline’s main sponsor is Skratch Labs, and she shares what she has learned from working with the company as well as how they have helped her on the path to her goals.

This week on our More Women More Miles series, we are so lucky to be joined by bike mechanic extraordinaire Casey Wytske. Casey has years of experience working as a mechanic in the cycling industry, and also teaching courses on bike mechanics. In this hands-on session Casey goes over all of the things we need to know in order to get our bikes ready to take on UNBOUND Gravel, or any other gravel event. To start off, she goes over tire selection to maximize comfort, efficiency and safety, as well as tips on how to find the right tire pressure. Casey also goes over the essential tools you need in your bag for any gravel ride, and then dives into a step by step bike check, including how to check and top up sealant in tubeless tires. Next Casey goes over fixing a flat and patching holes in your tire, as well as keeping your bike clean and running smooth on the course.

This week we welcome artist and cyclist Lisa Congdon. After a handful of charity bike rides, Lisa was drawn into cycling when she moved to Portland as a way to make friends in a new city. With a few years of road riding under her belt, Lisa was drawn into gravel cycling in 2020 and hasn’t looked back. This elementary school teacher-turned artist, activist and cyclist has found a way to beautifully weave together her passions in a meaningful way by creating art that represents the things she is passionate about. Lisa describes how cycling allows her to let her mind wander into the creative spaces that help to get her creativity flowing for her artistic projects, and why cycling is so helpful for her creative practice. Not only does Lisa create beautiful art, she uses her work as a vehicle for social change, and has woven that into the work that she has done in the cycling space.

Our guest this week is Colorado-based cyclist Michaela Thompson, who joined us a couple of days before the kickoff of the Life Time Grand Prix at Sea Otter Gravel. Originally from Boulder, Michaela now lives in Durango CO. She talks about her upbringing in a family of athletes, and how she made her way from downhill ski racing to joining the cycling team at Boulder High School in her junior year. Michaela joined the Boulder Junior Cycling Club in 2019 where she dabbled in all disciplines of cycling, and qualified as a junior for Cyclocross Worlds in January of 2020. She tells us how that experience sparked a fire in her to compete at a high level in cycling, leading her to join a professional development team in Durango. Over the next couple of years she gained experience in the endurance cycling world, and eventually made her own race program as a privateer in 2024 where she finished 10th overall in the Life Time Grand Prix. Michaela also shares some of her goals and plans for the 2025 race season, which include a second year in the Grand Prix, as well as racing Brek Epic which starts the day after Leadville!

Welcome to our 200th episode! This week Kathryn and Kristi are joined by a very special guest, Heather Jackson. A former professional triathlete, Heather has jumped with both feet into the world of off road racing, claiming impressive results in both gravel cycling AND ultra running. Heather grew up in an athletic family, and her early years in sport were spent on the soccer field and in the ice hockey rink. After her collegiate years playing ice hockey at Princeton, Heather quickly found her way into triathlon and never looked back. In her over 15 years as a professional triathlete Heather claimed 6 Ironman wins, 16 Ironman 70.3 wins, and finished in the top 5 at the Ironman World Championships 4 times. Heather talks about her transition from top Ironman pro to gravel racer and trail runner, and some of her highlights on the dirt so far including being part of the epic 9-woman sprint at Unbound in 2024. She also gives her advice for folks that may be pursuing both cycling and trail running this season.

As you may know, The Mid South Gravel was meant to take place last weekend in Stillwater, Oklahoma. However, the event had to be cancelled at the last minute due to a devastating wildfire in the area. Past guest Meg Fisher joins Kathryn this week, freshly home from Stillwater, to talk through the weekend’s events. Though Stillwater was spared of any major damage, the neighboring town of Guthrie was hit particularly hard by the fires, and many people there lost everything. Despite the devastation, the gravel community rose to come together on Saturday to show their support for Still water and Guthrie, and demonstrate what is really important about bike racing; people showing up for each other when they need it most.

This week on the show Kathryn and Kristi are joined by Life Time Grand Prix rookie Stella Hobbs, from Whitefish, MT. Stella grew up competing in nordic ski racing, and after a successful collegiate career she hung up her skis, moved back to Whitefish, and within a couple of years was the proud co-owner of Great Northern Cycle & Ski. She participated in the weekly group road rides, and started mountain biking with her husband. Then in 2020 the weekly shop ride went from pavement to gravel, thanks to the influence of Jess Cera. Although it took Stella a little while to come around to the idea of gravel riding, once she got started she never looked back. Her endurance sport background gave her a leg up in hanging on to those speedy shop rides, and in 2023 she made the jump to gravel racing, pushing herself to take on bigger and bigger races. Stella was inspired by the women of the Grand Prix, and worked hard to put herself in a position to be selected for the 2025 season. After some time off of serious training after her ski career she says she is enjoying the process of focussing on training again, and is looking forward to taking on all of the Grand Prix events this year.

Heidi and her partner live in Patagonia, AZ and have been hosting gravel cycling camps and events in the region for over 15 years. They recently launched a new event for 2025, but this time they are breaking out the running shoes! The Daydreamer trail run will be taking place in Patagonia February 27-March 1, 2025. The event will be held at the Patagonia Lumber Co, and will be offering 10km, 30km, and 50 km distances. Putting on a gravel event for thousands of people is no small task. Our guest this week Amy Charity knows that all too well. Amy is at the helm of the GRVL series which hosts gravel races in FNLD GRVL in Lahti Finland, RDL GRVL in Adelaide Australia, as well as SBT GRVL in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This year their flagship race, SBT GRVL was met with an enormous new challenge as it faced major resistance from some residents of the small rural community that hosts the event. Amy talks through the challenges of putting on such a large event in a remote, rural community and how she and the GRVL team have had to work with stakeholders to make changes with the event so that it minimizes disruptions for residents of the county. She also discusses why it is so important that we, as gravel cyclists, act as good stewards to the places in which we ride our bikes to ensure that these places are being protected and preserved for all users of the land.

This is our way of “keeping our foot on the gas” to make sure that women’s participation in big gravel events continues to grow.
