  • Rockshow Episode 212 The Pogues special guest Nate Palan

Nathan “Nate” Palan is a versatile musician, composer, and music enthusiast based in Brooklyn, New York. Originally from southern Wisconsin, he has cultivated a diverse career in the music industry over the past two decades.

The Pogues were a Celtic punk band formed in London in 1982, blending traditional Irish folk music with the raw energy of punk rock. The band was founded by Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy, and Jem Finer, and their name is derived from the Irish phrase “póg mo thóin” (meaning “kiss my arse”).

    Musical Style and Impact

The Pogues became known for their mix of traditional Irish instruments (like the tin whistle, accordion, and banjo) with punk’s rebellious energy. Their lyrics often told gritty, poetic tales of life, love, drinking, and Irish identity.

    Key Albums & Songs

Red Roses for Me (1984) – Their debut album, featuring early classics like “Streams of Whiskey.”

Rum Sodomy & the Lash (1985) – Produced by Elvis Costello, this album included “A Pair of Brown Eyes” and “The Old Main Drag.”

If I Should Fall from Grace with God (1988) – Their most successful album, featuring “Fairytale of New York” (a Christmas classic featuring Kirsty MacColl) and “Thousands Are Sailing.”Peace and Love (1989) and Hell’s Ditch (1990) – Continued their unique sound, with hits like “Misty Morning, Albert Bridge.”

    Band Turmoil & Lineup Changes

Shane MacGowan, the band’s charismatic but troubled frontman, was fired in 1991 due to alcohol and drug issues. The band continued with different singers, including Joe Strummer (The Clash), but they disbanded in 1996. They reunited in 2001 and played sporadically until 2014.

    Legacy

The Pogues influenced countless folk-punk bands, from Dropkick Murphys to Flogging Molly. Their music remains a staple of Irish culture, and “Fairytale of New York” is still one of the most beloved holiday songs.

    Shane MacGowan’s Passing

Shane MacGowan passed away in November 2023, marking the end of an era. Despite their ups and downs, The Pogues’ music continues to inspire and resonate with fans worldwide.

  • RockerMike and Rob Presents:Steve Allen and Ron Flynt from the band 20/20

20/20 was a power pop band that emerged in the late 1970s, known for their melodic hooks, jangly guitars, and tight harmonies. Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, the band was formed by Steve Allen (vocals, guitar) and Ron Flynt (vocals, bass), later relocating to Los Angeles to join the burgeoning power pop scene alongside bands like The Knack and The Plimsouls.

They gained recognition with their self-titled debut album, 20/20 (1979), which featured standout tracks like “Cheri” and “Yellow Pills”—the latter becoming a cult classic in the power pop genre. Their sound blended the British Invasion influences of bands like The Beatles and The Who with the punchy energy of new wave.

Despite critical acclaim, mainstream success eluded them, and they released a few more albums, including Look Out! (1981) and Sex Trap (1982), before disbanding. However, 20/20 remains highly regarded among power pop enthusiasts, and their music continues to be rediscovered by fans of the genre.

  • RockerMike and Rob Presents:Suzi Ronson

Suzi Ronson (née Fussey) played a crucial behind-the-scenes role in shaping David Bowie’s image during his Ziggy Stardust era. Born in England, she worked as a hairdresser in Beckenham when she first encountered Bowie and his then-wife, Angie Bowie. It was Suzi who gave Bowie the now-iconic red mullet haircut, which was inspired by a style from a Japanese fashion magazine. Impressed by her work, Bowie invited her to join his team as a personal stylist, making her the first woman to be part of his touring crew.

During the early 1970s, Suzi traveled with Bowie and his band, the Spiders from Mars, styling his hair, helping with wardrobe, and supporting the overall theatrical vision of his performances. This period was one of the most visually striking and influential phases of Bowie’s career.

While working with Bowie, she met Mick Ronson, Bowie’s lead guitarist and arranger. The two fell in love and eventually married, starting a family together. After Mick’s passing in 1993, Suzi continued working in creative fields, including music production, writing, and storytelling.

In recent years, she has shared her experiences from the Ziggy Stardust era through interviews and articles, giving fans a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes world of one of rock’s most transformative periods. Her contributions to Bowie’s image and legacy remain a vital part of his history.

  • RockerMike and Rob Presents: John F. Noone

I grew up in a small hamlet on Long Island called Floral Park. I am the youngest of eight siblings and the only one born in Floral Park. My mom was pregnant with me when we moved into our storybook home in 1963. I am now sixty years old and have lived in many places, but to this day, the majority of my dreams take place in my childhood home of Floral Park. About a year ago I had a dream that I was helping my mother retrieve some boxes from the attic. There was an unfinished section of the attic where my dad laid plywood across the rafters and we stored boxes of Christmas decorations, empty suitcases and bric-a-brac.

In this dream, my mother asked me to bring her a cardboard box. But as I got close to it, I saw a bird's nest with a strange looking skeleton curled up inside. When I picked up the nest I awoke and immediately wrote down every detail I could remember. I could still see the strange skeleton with my eyes half closed, trying not to forget what it looked like, I quickly drew it with a ballpoint pen.

The next day as I re-read my scribbled notes and studied the skeleton drawing I thought, 'what the heck does this mean'?

And so I started writing my novel, 'The Plain Field'. In little over a year I have finished the three books of this trilogy.

Releasing soon will be my second book, 'The Plain Field / Shadow Twins' and then the finale, "The Plain Field / Eyes and Ash'.

Noone’s debut novel, “The Plain Field,” is set in his childhood home of Floral Park. The story follows the O’Hare family as they move into a house on Plainfield Avenue, uncovering local folklore and hidden truths intertwined with their own family’s secrets. The narrative delves into themes of mystery and the supernatural, reflecting the enigmatic allure of Floral Park.

In addition to his writing, Noone draws inspiration from his dreams and life experiences, often incorporating them into his storytelling. He credits his “healthy Irish ability to exaggerate” as a contributing factor to his creative process.

Noone has engaged with his local community through events such as book signings and Q&A sessions, including one held at the Floral Park Knights of Columbus to celebrate the release of “The Plain Field.”

For readers interested in exploring Noone’s work, “The Plain Field” is available in paperback and eBook formats through various retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Target.

  • Rockshow episode 211 The Story of Stax Records

Stax Records was a pioneering American record label based in Memphis, Tennessee, that played a crucial role in the development of soul, R&B, and funk music. Founded in 1957 by Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton, the label became synonymous with the gritty, raw, and deeply emotional sound that defined Southern soul.

Stax was home to legendary artists such as Otis Redding, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett (through a deal with Atlantic), Isaac Hayes, and The Staple Singers. Unlike Motown, which had a polished and orchestrated style, Stax music was known for its raw energy, tight horn sections, and a heavy gospel influence.

One of Stax’s most defining characteristics was its integrated roster of musicians, producers, and executives during a time of deep racial segregation in the South. The studio band, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, featured both Black and white musicians, which was groundbreaking in the 1960s.

The label thrived throughout the 1960s but faced difficulties after the tragic death of Otis Redding in 1967 and the loss of its distribution deal with Atlantic Records in 1968. It experienced a resurgence in the early 1970s, largely due to Isaac Hayes’ massive success with Hot Buttered Soul and Shaft. However, financial struggles led to Stax’s bankruptcy in 1975.

In later years, Stax was revived as a brand, and its legacy continues through reissues and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis. Its impact on music remains profound, influencing countless artists across multiple genres.

  • I am Right episode 1 Congestion pricing

As of February 19, 2025, the U.S. Department of Transportation has rescinded its approval of New York City’s congestion pricing program, effectively halting the initiative. The program, which began on January 5, 2025, imposed a $9 toll on most vehicles entering Manhattan south of 60th Street during peak hours, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and fund mass transit improvements.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized the program, stating it lacked a toll-free alternative and disproportionately burdened working-class Americans and small businesses. In response, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has filed a lawsuit to challenge the federal government’s decision and maintain the program.

The future of congestion pricing in New York City remains uncertain as legal proceedings unfold.

  • Rockshow episode 210 The Story of Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy

Philip Parris Lynott, born on August 20, 1949, in West Bromwich, England, and raised in Dublin, Ireland, was the charismatic frontman, bassist, and primary songwriter of Thin Lizzy—one of the most influential rock bands of the 1970s and early 80s. Known for his poetic lyrics, distinctive voice, and commanding stage presence, Lynott played a crucial role in shaping the band’s signature sound, blending hard rock with Celtic influences and storytelling.

The Formation of Thin Lizzy (1969-1972)

Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in Dublin in 1969, along with drummer Brian Downey, guitarist Eric Bell, and organist Eric Wrixon (who left shortly after). The band was named after a character from a comic book (The Dandy’s “Tin Lizzie”). They signed with Decca Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1971, but mainstream success eluded them at first.

Their breakthrough came in 1972 with their reworking of the traditional Irish folk song “Whiskey in the Jar,” which became a major hit in Ireland and the UK. However, after their next few albums underperformed, Eric Bell left the band, leading to a major lineup change that would define their classic sound.

The Classic Thin Lizzy Lineup (1974-1980)

After Bell’s departure, Thin Lizzy transitioned into a twin-guitar rock powerhouse. Lynott recruited Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, forming the band’s legendary dual-guitar attack. Their first major success in this era came with “The Boys Are Back in Town” (1976) from the Jailbreak album, which remains their most famous song.

    Notable Albums & Songs:

•Jailbreak (1976) – “The Boys Are Back in Town,” “Jailbreak”

    •Johnny the Fox (1976) – “Don’t Believe a Word”

•Bad Reputation (1977) – “Dancing in the Moonlight,” “Bad Reputation”

•Live and Dangerous (1978) – Regarded as one of the greatest live rock albums of all time

•Black Rose: A Rock Legend (1979) – “Do Anything You Want To,” “Waiting for an Alibi,” “Black Rose”

Thin Lizzy became known for their explosive live performances, poetic lyrics, and blending of hard rock with Irish storytelling. However, internal tensions, particularly with Brian Robertson’s unreliability, led to lineup changes.

The Later Years & Decline (1980-1983)

Thin Lizzy disbanded in 1983 after a farewell tour, marking the end of an era.

Phil Lynott’s Solo Career & Tragic Death

After Thin Lizzy, Lynott pursued a solo career, releasing two albums:

•Solo in Soho (1980) – “King’s Call,” “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts”

    •The Philip Lynott Album (1982)

He also collaborated with musicians like Gary Moore (“Out in the Fields”) and worked on various projects. However, his drug addiction worsened, and in late 1985, he collapsed due to complications from heroin and alcohol abuse.

Phil Lynott passed away on January 4, 1986, at the age of 36.

    Thin Lizzy’s Legacy

Despite Lynott’s passing, Thin Lizzy’s influence remains strong. Various members have carried on the band’s music, with Scott Gorham leading tribute tours. Lynott’s lyrical storytelling, stage presence, and fusion of Celtic themes with hard rock inspired countless musicians, including Metallica, Iron Maiden, and U2.

Today, Lynott is celebrated as Ireland’s first great rock star, with statues, documentaries, and tributes keeping his legacy alive.

    Essential Listening for New Fans:

Phil Lynott remains one of rock’s most beloved and tragic figures—a poet, a rocker, and a legend whose music still resonates today.

  • Rockshow episode 205 Can and Faust

Can and Faust are two pioneering bands from the Krautrock movement, a genre that emerged in West Germany in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Krautrock is known for blending rock, electronic music, and avant-garde experimentation, influencing many subsequent genres, including post-punk, new wave, and electronic music.

    Can:

    • Origin: Cologne, West Germany (1968)

    • Members: The classic lineup consisted of Holger Czukay (bass), Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), Jaki Liebezeit (drums), Michael Karoli (guitar), and Damo Suzuki (vocals from 1970 to 1973).

    • Style: Can’s sound is a fusion of psychedelic rock, avant-garde, jazz, and funk with a strong emphasis on improvisation and minimalist rhythms. They often used repetitive grooves and layered textures, creating a hypnotic effect. Their music could range from delicate, ambient passages to wild, chaotic experimentation.

    • Notable Albums:

    • Tago Mago (1971): A landmark album known for its experimental sound, long instrumental jams, and Suzuki’s unpredictable vocals.

    • Ege Bamyasi (1972): Featuring more concise and rhythmic songs, with hits like “Vitamin C” and “Spoon.”

    • Future Days (1973): A more ambient, ethereal record, often seen as a peak of the band’s explorative nature.

    • Influence: Can was highly influential in shaping the experimental rock and electronic scenes, inspiring artists ranging from David Bowie to Radiohead.

    Faust:

    • Origin: Wümme, West Germany (1971)

    • Members: The core lineup included Werner “Zappi” Diermaier (drums), Jean-Hervé Péron (bass), Rudolf Sosna (guitar, keyboards), Arnulf Meifert (drums), and Hans Joachim Irmler (keyboards).

    • Style: Faust’s music is more avant-garde and noise-oriented than Can’s. They mixed rock with musique concrète, tape experiments, electronic soundscapes, and dissonant, atonal elements. Their sound often had an anarchic, confrontational edge, pushing the boundaries of what rock music could be.

    • Notable Albums:

    • Faust (1971): Their debut, an experimental and highly eclectic album, blending found sounds, noise, and fragmented song structures.

    • Faust IV (1973): A more accessible but still experimental album, with a mix of rock, ambient soundscapes, and odd time signatures.

    • The Faust Tapes (1973): Originally sold for a low price, this album was a collage of improvisations, studio experiments, and sound cut-ups.

    • Influence: Faust is seen as one of the most avant-garde bands of the Krautrock scene, influencing later experimental and industrial music, as well as bands in the post-punk and art-rock genres.

Both bands were central to Krautrock’s ethos of breaking free from traditional rock structures, emphasizing improvisation, and pushing boundaries with studio technology. While Can leaned more into groove-oriented, hypnotic rhythms, Faust embraced a more radical approach to sound experimentation.
