On this episode of FreightWaves Insiders, Dooner catches up with Michael Colin, founder and CEO of MVMNT. They’ll go on a career journey filled with dynamic pivots that has led to MVMNT building TMS 2.0.
Colin found his way into freight while working at a brokerage in Chicago, where he worked his way up from entry-level operations to director. His experiences as a broker led him to pursue his own venture in freight, initially following the mold of a digital broker before pivoting to develop a next-generation freight management software solution.
MVMNT is now 2 years old, venture-backed and focused on changing the transportation industry by building the next generation of transportation management systems.

Omar is a teacher by training and a trucker by trade. He has a graduate degree from Georgetown University, has studied at Oxford University, and mentors entrepreneurs at Stanford University. He drove trucks for years to pay for college, taught public school for Teach for America, then drove over the road as an owner operator for 3 years before founding a medium sized trucking company in 2003 and operating it until the end of 2010. He became a broker in 2011 and founded Surge as an independent brokerage late in 2016.
Since 2016 Surge has become one of the fastest growing digital brokerages in the industry providing real-time API pricing capabilities with TMS partners including: Blue Yonder, BluJay, Oracle, Mercury Gate, Kuebix. Omar sits on the Board of Directors of the Transportation Intermediaries Association, writes about industry related topics and speaks regularly at industry conferences for BluJay, Gartner, and CSCMP.

Guillermo’s passion to elevate smaller fleets stems from his experience as a fleet owner himself. His trucking roots can be traced back to his native Venezuela, where his career began as a master production scheduler for Nestle before founding his own trucking company, ALCARIN, which amassed nearly 500 employees.
After completing a master’s program at Columbia University, Guillermo Garcia relocated his business to South Florida in 2012. Five years later, he, alongside fellow Venezuelan immigrants Joaquin Brillembourg and Miguel Sucre, built SmartHop, which has to date secured over $16M in funding across two rounds.
SmartHop is a dispatch technology that helps smaller over-the-road truckers (over 90% of all trucking companies) compete with larger carriers through tech-powered freight dispatch and load booking, back office support, insurance, lease/rental, fuel cards and more.
