In today's episode we chat with Mark Jenkins who has been in the accounting industry for 35 years, with over 20 years in Public Practice with the majority of that time as sole Director of Quay Accountants in the sunshine capital of NZ - Whakatane.
In 2014, he sold his firm so that he could focus on his true passion - helping accountants to accelerate small business success.Mark joined forces with Viv Brownrigg, and together they founded The Gap, enabling Accounting firms throughout NZ, Australia and the UK to build recurring Business Advisory revenue.
We talked about Mark's journey, starting with his first introduction to tax at just 10 years old, his personal why that drives him, imposter syndrome and his view of the future of accountancy, and much more! Mark also shares some great insights to marketing that are key for all business owners.

In today's episode we chat with Dave Snowling. Dave has had 47 yearsβ experience within the building industry, mainly involved in the supply of joinery products. He was employed as an apprentice at 16 years old and stayed with the company for a total of 23 years of which the latter years were in senior managerial positions. That company become the largest joinery manufacturer within the UK. In 1999 Dave joined a small family owned joinery company, and helped grow the company, becoming the MD and a shareholder.
In 2010 Dave started his own business as a consultant working for several different companies involved in wood processing.
We chat about the challenges he had transitioning from employment to being a business owner and effectively then being on his own. As well as managing teams and people problems and how he challenged his team, giving them accountability to grow and move forward. It really was an insightful chat, and the overarching theme of the conversation was the importance of communication and how this is the best tool in our toolbox as leaders.

In today's episode we speak to Sarah Oakley, the founder of the Brave Bird Club, who is on a mission to inspire everyday she-roes to find their brave through the tougher times in life. Addressing the many social issues we face today, in an unequivocal example of women supporting women, she created knickers to be worn on ‘those’ days when you need to gain inner strength and find your brave. Sarah now heads up a growing Brave Bird community through social media and regular podcasts.
We spoke about Sarah's inspiration to set up Brave Bird Club, the work she does to help those with tough times and how asking for help is sometimes actually the bravest thing someone can do. We then moved on to Sarah's move to Spain, and running her business from there, with a factory in a third country!
We also chatted about what success means to us, and that work life balance theme cropped up again!

In today's episode we speak to James Wilkinson - a corporate and commercial lawyer, who routinely advises clients on M&A transactions, capital fundraisings, shareholder agreements and general commercial arrangements.
We spoke about James' journey from making major life decisions at 16 to giving up a well paid Corporate London role to move out, take a pay cut and spend more time with his wife and children. In this episode we spoke to James Sharp (Cheryl's husband) about his varied career and journey to becoming a business owner. There were tears, there was laughter, and a real good natter!
James started his working life serving in the Iraq conflict in 2003 and spent five years as a Submariner in the Royal Navy. During this time he received the Iraq war medal and Nato medal for his role in protecting the shores during the Athens Olympics in 2004.
After leaving the Royal Navy James went on to a 12 year career in customer service management on the railways, managing multiple teams of 60+ and overseeing the day to day operations of his region.
James is forever decorating at home, and absolutely loves seeing the difference something simple like a fresh coat of paint, a different colour, or even a feature wall can make to a room. James left the railway to help Cheryl build her business using his team and HR skills to set up one arm of the business, but after perfecting his skills whilst making over their own home (more than once!) and helping a few friends the decorating bug got stronger and stronger, and his company Pink Pig Decorating was born!
During the episode we talked about James' journey and all his learnings that he has brought into his business.

As a mum and step-mum to a tribe of 5, I fully understand the juggle of work and home life.
