I this episode Louise Madeley from Madeleys First Aid Plus, an expert with over 30 years of medical experience, explains the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest. A heart attack is caused by a blockage in an artery leading to the heart, resulting in death of heart muscle tissue. Symptoms include chest pain/discomfort, shortness of breath, nausea, sweating, and pain in the arms, back, neck or jaw. A cardiac arrest is caused by an electrical malfunction making the heart stop beating effectively, leading to sudden collapse. It requires immediate CPR and use of a defibrillator. Louise stresses calling emergency services right away for either situation and covers first aid steps to help in the interim. Louise will be provide more details on performing CPR and using automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in an upcoming episode.
