SALE. SALE. SALE. SALE. SALE. SALE. SALE.
Are you an ACTION taker or an inspiration hoarder, pinning beautiful home decor pictures on Pinterest like it's your job? In today's episode, I'm sharing how three different women, with three different budgets, learning styles, and aspirations for their homes took a different pathway to achieving the goals they wanted for their homes. Although each of these ladies had different design styles, they all ultimately had the same goal: they wanted their homes to look better tomorrow than they did today! Inside this episode you'll hear how Colleen chose 1:1 decorating coaching calls (lovingly referred to as Decorating SOS calls) where she slowly chipped away at turning her inspiration into results she loves.
Then you'll meet Sarah, one of the hardest workers I know. Sarah knew she wanted change, was willing (and able) to do the work herself, she just didn't know where to start. So we started with a plan - a Room Edit, where my designer's eye evaluated her space and compared it to the inspiration photo she had and then I gave her a generalized plan that she put into action.
And finally, you'll meet a busy, corporate mom of four, Kara, who had a great starting foundation in her dining room, but wanted help elevating the space but didn't want to spend the time picking out the products herself. So I created a Custom Design Board (aka Mood Board) for her to see all of the product choices I selected from the stores she likes shopping at. Seeing these products together allowed her to see how they interacted with each other before she purchased a thing. She was able to save time and, although I shopped for her, saved money because she knew what the products looked like together before she purchased a thing.
For ONE WEEK ONLY...these three design services are available for booking before heading back into the vault for another year. Though you don't have to receive the service this week, you do have to book it this week by May 31st.

So, you want your home to look like a designer was just there...
Last week, in episode #249, I was answering a listener's question who wanted to know 'how to get the professional look' inside your home.
Last week I shared 4 foundational ways you can create the look in your home that a designer was there doing the work. These four things are the base for starting - things like creating a cohesive look, paying attention to scale, applying the rule 'less is more.' You can listen to that episode here!
This week, I'm going a bit deeper as I share five things to do while you are styling your home to add the proverbial icing on the cake. Styling is the finishing touches and the finishing touches are in the details. We explore how to create a full, nuanced, intentional look floor to ceiling.
After listening to this episode, if you are wanting help creating a home that looks like a designer was just there doing it for you, come join Home Design 101. Inside Home Design 101, you will learn decorating concepts that will help make your home look cohesive and feel cozy. With monthly office hours and a private student community, you will have the hand holding you need to transform your spaces into spaces you can't stop gushing about. Cleaning: do you love it OR do you hate it?
It's no surprise when you visit Pinterest, Instagram or the interwebs that there are a multitude of cleaning systems that are promoted as THE BEST with promises of having the cleanest house you've ever had in the history of ever. But here's the thing...
Unless you LOVE cleaning, I think it can be hard to get into the routine of cleaning in a sustainable, consistent way. It doesn't matter how MUCH you love a clean house, so much as it matters how your personality coincides with a routine that works for you!
So in this episode, I'm sharing the system that I found that FINALLY works with my personality that allows me to have continually clean house without feeling overwhelmed. But although I'm sharing it with you, I'm not assuming that we are one and the same.
In this episode I'm sharing with you the QUESTIONS you should ask yourself so you know how to develop a cleaning routine that works for you, the demands of your home and WITH your personality.
This show is a replay...enjoy!

How do you decorate your home to make
it look like a professional did it?
This is the question asked by one of our listeners - how do you get professional looking results when decorating your home? This is a two part series (subscribe to listen to part 2 on Tuesday, May 21st).
Keep these four decorating principles in mind while decorating your home:
1. Less is more. This doesn't always mean you need to declutter, though that's a good first step. Less can mean, fewer items, fewer matching sets, a less stuffed couch, less of the footprint taken up by furniture in general.
2. Scale matters. Paying attention to size guidelines is critical for getting a room to look just right. A too small area rug or too short of curtains can instantaneously spoil good design.
3. Repetition is key. Repetition of design elements is how one creates a cohesive looking home. Repetition in the large details is important, but when that repetition carries to the small details...that's where it starts looking 'professional.'
4. Practice, experiment, change things often. This is your permission to play. If you only intake ideas and never practice them, you'll be left wondering what a professionally designed home looks like.
Part two of how to make your home look like a professional was there, will be airing next week. Subscribe to listen.

Did you know?
The outside of your home is a reflection of the inside. Those scruffy looking plants, that unkept lawn and all the stuff on your front porch...those are telling a story about your home.
Creating a home that you love coming home to doesn't just start once you open the front door, it starts when you turn into your driveway (or if we're feeling really philosophical - it starts in your mind and in your heart...we'll save that for another day).
When people talk about curb appeal, of course it's an impression for others - often times the first impression, but it SHOULD be done for you!
In this episode, I'm sharing four quick tips for boosting your curb appeal this weekend - and it goes beyond mowing the lawn and trimming the hedges. The yard and those scraggly bushes are important to take care of, but so is your front porch or your landing area.

Have you ever wondered how you can arrange your
living room to look cozy?
Today's quick tip comes as a question from Elizabeth, a listener, who wants to know "what goes together and how to arrange a room to look cozy."
What goes together is determined once you know your personal design style. You can learn that here: Home Design 101
But how to arrange your living room to look cozy, however, starts with intentionality. There are five components that help create a cozy looking space in arrangement alone. Choosing a focal point, creating a conversational area with anchoring pieces like coffee tables and area rugs, having easy walk throughs and flat surfaces ample enough to invite staying with room enough to set drinks and snacks.
Adding textures and styling come secondary to the arrangement (all can be learned inside Home Design 101).

Is the thought of shopping for a new couch intimidating?
In today's episode I'm talking with Alex Back, CEO and founder of couch.com. He's worked extensively with partners such as Costco, Bed Bath and Beyond and Amazon and his work has been highlighted in many publications such as Forbes, CNN and HGTV, among others. Alex is delighted to bring his experience and authority on couches and the furniture industry to this platform, along with many of his industry colleagues who are helping him keep the Couch.com audience informed and engaged on a daily basis.
During our conversation Alex shares the concept behind his site couch.com and how you can use it as a tool when you are shopping for a sofa for your home. Going beyond the question 'what style should I get,' Alex's site helps you navigate the confusing world of purchasing a couch, demystifying the process with suggestions of: where to go, how to negotiate pricing, brand comparison, online shopping or in store shopping and SO much more.
Alex is a wealth of knowledge and our conversation just scratches the surface of how to buy a couch the easy way! Whether you are currently couch shopping or may do so later, I encourage you to get familiar with his site so you can use it as a resource when you are ready. https://couch.com

Do you have too much stuff and not enough storage?
In this episode, I'm answering a listener's question who asks: How do I reduce visual clutter if I have minimal storage? Decluttering is always a a solution, but HOW do you declutter and HOW do you make sense of how much to keep and how much to get rid of? When we think of our home as having natural physical boundaries within each room, we can begin to compartmentalize the smaller areas within each room, helping us to create more physical boundaries to place our things. Once those physical boundaries are full, it's a clear indication that we have enough - too much even.
But how do we know what items to rid our homes of? Understanding your personal aesthetic is a critical piece of that decluttering puzzle. Knowing which design elements make up your aesthetic will help you identify which items should stay and which should go.

Do you wish your home looked more expensive?
Just because you are on a budget, it doesn't mean your home has to look budget. In today's episode I'm sharing ten things you can do to your home that will instantly elevate the look, making your home look and feel more expensive...and the best part? Several of these ideas are free! Understanding scale, furniture placement, balance, contrast, layers, texture are all part of today's conversation. It's a starting place - a Cliff Notes version - of how you can start reimagining the things you already own to create a home that not only serves your family functionally, but is a space you want to be in because it's just...pretty!
Learning these concepts can happen in episodes like this one, but if you're ready for more than the abridged version, I invite you to join me inside Home Design 101 where we dive deep into the world of home decorating, learning things like:
1. Where to start when you're overwhelmed by your entire home
2. How to choose a color palette
3. How to make things look cohesive
4. How to define your style
5. How to spend your money wisely
6. How to know when to buy and when to use what you have
7. How designers save money when shopping at 'regular' stores like Target, IKEA, Hobby Lobby
8. How to style everything to make it look like a designer did the work
And SO much more!!

Do you ever wonder why it's SO hard to decorate your home?
In today's episode we're talking about 3 ways you could be making decorating harder than it has to be and what to do about it. Here it is in a nutshell...get help!
If you are wanting a home that looks different (no matter WHAT that different is) tomorrow than it does today, get help. Somehow it's second nature to ask for help when we need to fix our toilet, lose weight or do our taxes, but somehow it feels frivolous when it comes to our homes.
But, friend, your home environment is SO INCREDIBLY important - it nurtures you the way food nurtures you, the way kind words nurture you. Taking care to make intentional decisions is important and going it alone can be frustrating, overwhelming and down right confusing.
Help doesn't always mean 'hire the fancy' designer...though it could.
Help doesn't always mean 'take a course'...though it could.
Help could literally mean asking your MIL who always seems to have a beautiful home, what her secrets are. How HONORED she would be for you to ask that question.
As I share three things that could be holding you back in home decorating I want to you to ask the next question so you can go deeper and take the next right step. And if you have questions about what that could be for you, but don't have a MIL to ask - I'd be happy to answer. Email me at: [email protected]

What rules are you following when you're decorating your home?
In today's podcast episode I'm speaking with special guest, New York Times Bestselling author, Myquillyn Smith about this idea that when it comes to our homes there should be suggestions and guidelines to follow - never hard and fast rules.
Myquillyn agrees that design is teachable and inside her new book (releasing April 24, 2024) House Rules, she shares the guidelines that will help us navigate this journey of creating homes we love.
In today's conversation, we focus our attention on an often misunderstood and controversial topic in home decorating...buying REAL house plants. Myquilin teaches us a new perspective on viewing the purchase and use of real house plants even if we claim to have not one, but two black thumbs!

How does your home FEEL?
When it comes to decorating our homes, we often stay stuck in a place of reason. Understandably so, especially when it comes to making practical decisions based on budget, decisions surrounding big ticket items, long term choices, etc. But FEELING shouldn't be dismissed.
Knowing how you feel about your home in it's current state affects how you want your home to feel. And that feeling should be a filter for making decisions, just as much as your budget and your aesthetic are filters for making decisions.
In this episode we're talking about how feeling should be just as important as understanding your aesthetic and how to use it to inform decision making.
So...how do you feel about your home?

Do you ever wonder...where do you START when you want to decorate your home or re-fresh a single room?
Starting BIG with a purchase could possibly be the worst thing you could do as you begin re-designing your home. So, put away your credit card and grab a notebook and a pen because you'll want to pay attention to the DETAILS.
Learning your design style is not just an important step. It's THE MOST IMPORTANT first step, so what details do you pay attention to? All of them!
Your style is more nuanced than the global terms that are tossed around left and right. Your style is more YOU than it is Farmhouse. It's more YOU than it is Boho. It's more YOU than it is Traditional. Cottage. Country. Industrial. Fill in the BIG global design style. Once you understand what your style is, you have the freedom to mix and match.
Do you like a little Cottage and a little Industrial, but wonder how to blend the two? Looking at the fine details of the design elements you gravitate toward will help!

"I have decision fatigue!"
These were the words my Home Design 101 student, Susan, said when we were talking about her couch. Decision Fatigue is when you are so overwhelmed with the myriad of choices in front of you that you don't know how to narrow it down in order to make a design decision. Turns out, Susan does NOT have decision fatigue. She knows EXACTLY what she wants. Why? How? Susan is learning to understand her unique design style and she's applying that style to the decision surrounding her couch. What's the problem then? The problem is that we haven't looked long enough for a couch that meets her aesthetic. I have full confidence that we'll find it.
In this behind the scenes look at Office Hours inside of Home Design 101, Susan has several other ah-ha moments. Those teeny tiny side tables she inherited from her parents. They hold a lot of power. So much power that they are dictating bigger decisions like which dining table to purchase. How can something that small have so much power? We talk about it inside Office Hours and we're inviting you in on the conversation.
If you want design break throughs and coaching like Susan, join me inside Home Design 101 or join me inside our:

Have a messy husband?
OR
Maybe you have a hubby who doesn't agree with your style?
In today's episode we're talking about this hot topic that happens in SO many homes. You may have the best solution for making your home beautiful and keeping it tidy, but the partner you share it with seems to sabotage your every effort.
In today's episode I'm teaching you the three steps to partnering together to reach the goals you have for your home. Do you get to have it all your way? Maybe...or maybe not. The goal, however, is never to bully your partner into relenting, nor is it to have you relent on what it is that you want. Finding a solution that works for the two of you is the goal.

Have you started decorating for spring?
Decorating your home for spring doesn't mean you have to put out all the eggs, bunnies and carrots. Though those can be cute in vignettes, it can also cheapen the presentation of your home decorating. Instead of decorating overtly with spring elements, try decorating with the allusion to spring.
In this episode I share five tips that help you allude to spring in your decorating and by doing THAT, you immediately elevate the look of your home's design.
1. Spring clean - including decluttering, airing out and rearranging
2. Bring the outdoors in, but first you need to go outdoors to gather inspiration
3. Shop the house for things you already own that allude to spring
4. Re-enter items into your room in layers - double and triple checking your choice before styling
5. Take a picture to check your volume and location of decorations

What's my design style?
It's the age-old question. What's my style? What name can I give it? What box can I put it in to make my job of decorating my home easier?
The hard truth: those home decorating style quizzes DON'T make your job easier. They make it harder...a LOT harder.
Your design style can be labeled, but it should be labeled by you and you alone. Why? Because you and I can both be looking at the exact same picture with the same design style label and interpret it two different ways.
Inside the BACK TO BASICS BOOTCAMP I teach you how to learn your design style...not just how to recognize a pretty picture. I teach you the nuances that make up your style and help you make a label that YOU understand. When you do that...you UNLOCK the secret to learning how to decorate your home.
This is the NUMBER ONE thing you should do when you are wanting to learn how to decorate your home, you're feeling stuck or uninspired, you feel like you lack the decorating gene. THIS, friend, is it!

Live Organized by Design with Kimberly Armstrong
In today's episode I'm chatting with interior designer and home organization expert, Kimberly Armstrong of Armstrong Design Collective. We chat about designing a space based on functionality before beauty, the art of organized living and being conscious consumers so we know what we're bringing into our homes so we can live BIG even in small spaces.
Organization isn't just about everything having a place to call home, it's about functionality and having homes that serve the family well through intentional organizational planning.
"When you start with a blank space, you can make better space for the things you have to store." - Kimberly Armstrong
Learning the art of conscious consuming is at the heart of having an organized space. You'll learn that conscious consuming is being mindful of what you're bringing into your home and why. You can be a conscious consumer when you ask yourself:
1. Do I need it?
2. What's the cost of the item (both monetary and physical)?
3. Where's it going to live?
4. Does it add value to my home in a way that serves my family?
