And here's my non-spoiler review of Nosferatu, the latest movie from Robert Eggers, which stars Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe. After a mysterious Count purchases some land in 19th-century Germany, a deeply evil presence casts its shadow on the city. Call him Dracula. Call him Orlok. Just don't call him collect. Transylvania's far. Hunter discusses how this version of the Count leaves much to be desired, the potent atmosphere and immersive environments, and why in an insane movie, it is the sane actors who fail.0:00 Intro1:17 A Retelling, Not a Reimagining2:26 The Count5:50 Plotty7:18 Potent Imagery9:27 Lily-Rose Depp is Very Good10:54 Closing Thoughts & What's NextTo join the Feature Underground, click here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvxAK5S4R3vrfJQ7jySGDog/joinX: (https://twitter.com/Lanierhunt64)Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/hunterlaniermoviereviews/)Tik Tok: (https://www.tiktok.com/@featureundergroun)Letterboxd: (https://letterboxd.com/HunterLanier/)#nosferatu #horrormovies #roberteggers

And here's my review of A Complete Unknown, the upcoming Bob Dylan movie starring Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Boyd Holbrook, and Scoot McNairy. The film chronicles Bob Dylan's early days as an artist, from the moment he arrived in New York City to his tumultuous performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. As he evolves as an artist, the public--and those closest to him--try to simplify, classify, deny, defy, and crucify him. Hunter discusses how the the film's monotonous approach is antithetical to the Dylan persona, where it gets Dylan right, its emphasis on Woody Guthrie, and a clever trick it does with its screenplay. 0:00 How My Opinions Changed 1:42 At Odds with the Dylan Persona 4:26 Respects the Music5:37 Script Faults 7:33 Importance of Woody Guthrie 9:31 Dylan as Protagonist 14:49 Dialogue & Supporting Characters16:34 Timothée Chalamet19:06 Fame, No Direction Home, Dylan's Involvement21:49 Closing Thoughts & What's NextTo join the Feature Underground, click here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvxAK5S4R3vrfJQ7jySGDog/joinX: (https://twitter.com/Lanierhunt64)Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/hunterlaniermoviereviews/)Tik Tok: (https://www.tiktok.com/@featureundergroun)Letterboxd: (https://letterboxd.com/HunterLanier/)#ACompleteUnknown #bobdylan #folkmusic

And here's my review of Juror #2, the latest and quite possibly last movie from the legendary Clint Eastwood. It stars Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, J.K. Simmons, Zoey Deutch, and Kiefer Sutherland. After a small theatrical release, it will come out on MAX on December 29th. Juror #2 is a high-concept story, as it centers around a juror in a murder trial who not only knows the defendant to be innocent, but is himself guilty of the crime. Hunter discusses how unsentimental the movie is compared to Eastwood's recent work, the casual dread at its core, and why we should respect the masters while they're alive.0:00 Intro1:38 Solid Late-Eastwood3:08 The Screenplay 5:24 Casual Dread8:55 Unsentimental Eastwood10:17 Respect the Masters12:41 Housekeeping & What's NextX: (https://twitter.com/Lanierhunt64)Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/hunterlaniermoviereviews/)Tik Tok: (https://www.tiktok.com/@featureundergroun)Letterboxd: (https://letterboxd.com/HunterLanier/)#film #clinteastwood #filmcritic

And here's my spoiler free review of Gladiator II, directed by Ridley Scott. It stars Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pescal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and Connie Nielsen. The film finds slave-turned-gladiator, Lucius (Mescal), on a Death Wish campaign to avenge the killing of his wife by Roman general, Acacius (Pescal). He ends up purchased by a former slave, Macrinus (Washington), who has ambitions of his own. If I tell you any more, Ridley Scott will fire a cannon into my gut.Hunter discusses the movie's infectious fun, how it improves on the first film, and why its averseness to risk hinders its potential.0:00 Intro1:14 Ridley Scott in Good Form3:10 Everyone's Having Fun5:02 Restraint and Reverence5:55 Improvement on the Original9:29 Handicaps11:03 Sword and Sandal Movies12:19 Q&A and What's NextX: (https://twitter.com/Lanierhunt64)Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/hunterlaniermoviereviews/)Tik Tok: (https://www.tiktok.com/@featureundergroun)Letterboxd: (https://letterboxd.com/HunterLanier/)#film #gladiator #ridleyscott

And here's my review of Heretic, the latest A24 production. It stars Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East. It's directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. We meet two Mormon girls (Thatcher and East) on their uphill assignment of converting complete strangers to an entirely new religion. They're naive, but smart, and easy targets for mockery. When Mr. Reed (Grant) opens the door with a humble smile, it's a radical contrast to the cruel bullies from earlier in the day. But their pleasant visit quickly turns into a sinister lecture on religion. Hunter discusses how Hugh Grant carries the movie's heavy load, how it doesn't follow through on its excellent first act, and its tendency to overplay its hand.0:00 Intro and Pie1:34 The Hugh Grant Show4:19 First Act Sets a High Bar6:13 Second and Third Act Disappoint7:50 Rolling My Eyes10:17 Closing Thoughts & What's NextXInstagramTik TokLetterboxd#film #a24 #heretic

And here's my review of Anora, the festival sweetheart directed by Sean Baker and starring Mikey Madison. The ending of Anora is discussed at the end of the video in a spoiler section. If you're not already aware, Anora is about a stripper whose ability to speak Russian gets her an admirer in the ambiguously rich Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn). Dressed in her finest pair of jean shorts, Anora marries Vanya and kicks off a highly unpredictable honeymoon phase. Trust me: the less you know about the movie, the better.Hunter discusses the movie's uncommon structure, how it evolves Baker's primary motif, and the curious ending (spoiler section). 0:00 Intro2:11 Sean Baker Evolved5:29 Three Movies in One8:45 Standout Performances10:18 The Ending (SPOILERS)14:13 Closing Thoughts + What's NextX: (https://twitter.com/Lanierhunt64)Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/hunterlaniermoviereviews/)Tik Tok: (https://www.tiktok.com/@featureundergroun)Letterboxd: (https://letterboxd.com/HunterLanier/)#film #anora #moviereview

And here's my review of Memoir of a Snail, one of my favorite movies of the year so far. It features the voice talents of Sarah Snook, Eric Bana, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Jacki Weaver, and Nick Cave. It's directed by Adam Elliott, who hasn't directed a movie since 2009's critically acclaimed, Mary and Max. The life of Grace Pudel (Snook) is not a charmed one, but it's not an unusual one either. It's a volatile wave of bad decisions, strokes of luck, thunderbolts from God, and beautiful epiphanies. If the film has a hero, it's Grace's octogenarian friend, Pinky, who returns books by putting them in the trash can.Hunter discusses the movie's nuanced perspective of life, its Dickensian influence, and how perfectly it weaves together comedy and pathos. 0:00 Intro2:07 Visuals & Tone3:40 Life Sucks, and Also Doesn't6:43 Nuanced Character Arch8:19 Expert Writing & Dickens9:57 Genuinely Funny12:08 What's Up NextX: (https://twitter.com/Lanierhunt64)Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/hunterlaniermoviereviews/)Tik Tok: (https://www.tiktok.com/@featureundergroun)Letterboxd: (https://letterboxd.com/HunterLanier/)#film #animation #foreignfilm

And here's my review of The Apprentice, the mildly controversial film about Donald Trump and Roy Cohn, directed by Ali Abbasi and starring Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong.Ben Braddocking it up in the wolves den of '70s New York--and the wolves den within the wolves den, which is the upper crust of '70s New York filled with ruthless plutocrats and libertines--the timid Donald Trump doesn't know where he fits in. He's got money, but he doesn't know what to do with it. Women will go out with him, but they lose interest half-way through the date. That is, until he meets Roy Cohn, who takes Trump under his dark, featherless wing (imagine something from Gustave Dore). Hunter discusses how the movie succumbs to its baser instincts in the third act, Jeremy Strong's capital-P portrayal of Cohn, and the mixing of art and politics.

And here's my review of Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to Todd Philips' acclaimed film from 2019 that won two Academy Awards. This Joker 2 review is brought to you by the French pronunications of Jean Renoir. The film reconvenes with Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) as he McMurphys it up at Arkham Asylum, waiting for his murder trial to begin. At Arkham, he goes gaga for Harleen Quinn (Lady Gaga), who's something of a murderer groupie. With her at his side, the defeated Fleck starts to get his mojo back. Hunter discusses the risk Todd Philips takes by dismantling the Joker character and his first movie, its noncommittal romance, and how it falls short as a musical. 0:00 Intro1:15 Thoughts on the First Movie4:20 Deconstructing the Joker10:14 Noncommittal Romance12:34 Musically Uninclined 14:42 Closing Thoughts18:12 Show and Tell

And here's my review of Megalopolis, the first film in over a decade from legendary director, Francis Ford Coppola. The film is a bedtime story of heroes, villains, and fantastical worlds from Grandpa Coppola. Its hero is Cesar (Adam Driver), the imperfect artist who gives people cars when all they ask for is faster horses. Its mayor is Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who represents structure, order, and preserving proven quantities. Clodio (Shia LeBeouf) is the Caligula or Nero character, a parasite of chaos waiting for when the society is weak to take over. Then you have Crassus and Wow (Jon Voight and Aubrey Plaza), who are greed and lust, lizard brain impulses that trade grand progress for temporary pleasures. All of these are the foils of Cesar, Coppola's proxy and hope for the future. Hunter discusses the movie's many ideas (of which there are, perhaps, too many), it being Coppola's most personal movie yet, and where it may fall in the pantheon of great films.

Deadpool & Wolverine, the latest from the MCU, is the subject of this Feature Underground review. The film follows the titular Super-Bums, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), as they get into all sorts of shenanigans after angering the temporal bureaucrats at TVA (a metaphor for the corporate entities that run these franchises).Hunter discusses the freedom of the R rating, why it's okay to have fun at a movie that's not a generational artwork, and how the movie's target audience is different from the recent MCU lineup. Dune: Part Two is latest film from acclaimed director, Denis Villeneuve, and the second film in a planned trilogy. It also happens to be the latest subject of Feature Underground. The film follows Paul, intergalactic royalty and all-around chosen one, as he stirs the pot in an ever-deepening conspiracy even he doesn't know the depths of. Drive-Away Dolls is the first movie to be solely directed by Ethan Coen and the subject of this Feature Underground review from Hunter Lanier. The film follows two young women (Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan) on their long, strange trip to Tallahassee. Sex, violence, and a guy named Curlie who doesn't like to be called Curlie--that's a movie ticket with value. The Zone of Interest, the latest from director, Jonathan Glazer, is the subject of this Feature Underground review from Hunter Lanier. The film is set in idyllic neighborhood of white picket fences and trimmed hedges, which is situated directly next door to Auschwitz. Living here are the concentration camp's officers and their families. As the residents of this neighborhood go about their daily routines, unspeakable--and, in this case, unfilmable--horrors occur in the background.Hunter discusses how Glazer tailors his style to his subject, the film's exceptional use of suggestion, and sees how many times he can say "banality of evil." American Fiction, the first film from Cord Jefferson, is the subject of this FU review from Hunter Lanier.Jeffrey Wright plays Monk, a novelist who's unsuccessful because his books aren't marketable enough. Frustrated with the culture trying to pigeonhole him as a "black author," Monk decides to lean into what they want him to be--purely for his own amusement--and his career explodes. Hunter discusses the movie's light satirical touch—nibbles rather than bites—the true butt of its jokes, its lack of a visual identity, and how it shares common ancestry with Dream Scenario. May December, the latest movie from Todd Haynes, is the subject of this Feature Underground review from Hunter Lanier. The film follows Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), an actress who is going to play Gracie (Julianne Moore) in a film within the film. Gracie spent years in prison due to her relationship with a twelve-year-old boy. After being released from prison, Gracie goes on to marry the now-grown Joe (Charles Melton), with whom she has children and a relatively normal life. However, once Elizabeth shows up to research her role, the past explodes to the surface like a oil from a well. Hunter discusses the subversive take on the procedural drama, the phenomenal casting of Charles Melton, and the fun of the exaggerated melodrama.
