Timothée Chalamet is a talented and versatile American actor who has captivated audiences with his performances on both the big and small screens. Born on December 27, 1995, in New York City, Chalamet grew up in an artistic family. His mother, Nicole Flender, is a real estate broker and former Broadway dancer, while his father, Marc Chalamet, is an editor for UNICEF. Chalamet's older sister, Pauline, is also an actress.
Chalamet's passion for acting began at a young age. He attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where he honed his craft and participated in various school productions. During his time at LaGuardia, Chalamet appeared in several commercials and even had a brief role on the television series "Law & Order."
After graduating from high school in 2013, Chalamet enrolled at Columbia University. However, he found it challenging to balance his academic pursuits with his growing acting career. After a year at Columbia, Chalamet transferred to New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study, where he was able to create his own curriculum and focus on his acting.
Chalamet's breakout role came in 2017 with the independent film "Call Me by Your Name." Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the movie tells the story of a young man named Elio who falls in love with an older graduate student, Oliver, played by Armie Hammer. Chalamet's portrayal of Elio was widely praised by critics and audiences alike, and he received numerous accolades for his performance, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
Following the success of "Call Me by Your Name," Chalamet's career continued to soar. He appeared in a string of critically acclaimed films, including "Lady Bird," "Hostiles," and "Beautiful Boy." In "Lady Bird," Chalamet played the role of Kyle Scheible, a charming but aloof love interest of the main character, played by Saoirse Ronan. The film, directed by Greta Gerwig, was a commercial and critical success, and further cemented Chalamet's status as a rising star in Hollywood.
In "Hostiles," Chalamet portrayed a young soldier named Philippe DeJardin, who accompanies a group of Native Americans on a perilous journey across the American West. The film, which also starred Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike, showcased Chalamet's range as an actor and his ability to hold his own alongside seasoned performers.
Chalamet's performance in "Beautiful Boy" earned him widespread acclaim and further established him as one of the most talented actors of his generation. In the film, Chalamet played the role of Nic Sheff, a young man struggling with drug addiction. The movie, which was based on the memoirs of Nic and his father, David Sheff, was a harrowing and emotionally charged portrayal of the devastating impact of addiction on individuals and families. Chalamet's performance was raw, authentic, and deeply moving, and he received numerous award nominations for his work in the film.
In addition to his film work, Chalamet has also made a name for himself on the stage. In 2016, he appeared in the off-Broadway play "Prodigal Son," for which he received rave reviews. Chalamet's performance in the play showcased his versatility as an actor and his ability to command the stage with his presence and charisma.
Chalamet's success has not been limited to the United States. He has also gained a significant following internationally, particularly in Europe. In 2019, Chalamet starred in the Netflix film "The King," which was based on Shakespeare's "Henry IV" and "Henry V." Chalamet played the role of King Henry V, a young monarch who must navigate the complex political landscape of 15th-century England. The film was a critical and commercial success, and further solidified Chalamet's status as a global star.
Chalamet's talent and charisma have also made him a sought-after collaborator for many of Hollywood's most respected directors. He has worked with a number of acclaimed filmmakers, including Wes Anderson, Greta Gerwig, and Denis Villeneuve. In 2021, Chalamet starred in Anderson's "The French Dispatch," a whimsical and visually stunning film that tells the story of a group of journalists working for a fictional magazine in France. Chalamet played the role of Zeffirelli, a student revolutionary who becomes involved in a tumultuous love affair.
Chalamet's collaboration with Villeneuve also proved to be a major success. In 2021, he starred in the highly anticipated adaptation of Frank Herbert's science fiction novel "Dune." Chalamet played the lead role of Paul Atreides, a young nobleman who becomes embroiled in a conflict for control of the desert planet Arrakis and its valuable spice. The film was a massive commercial and critical success, grossing over $400 million worldwide and earning numerous award nominations.
Off-screen, Chalamet has become known for his fashion sense and his commitment to social and political causes. He has been a vocal advocate for environmental protection and has used his platform to raise awareness about climate change. In 2019, Chalamet attended the United Nations Climate Action Summit and spoke about the urgent need for action to address the climate crisis.
Chalamet has also been a supporter of various charitable organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Trevor Project, which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth. In 2020, Chalamet participated in a virtual benefit concert for the organization, alongside other celebrities such as Demi Lovato and Lil Nas X.
