Kyle Harper est Professor of Classics and Letters à l'université de l'Oklahoma et Fractal Faculty au Santa Fe Institute. Pour les historiens de la société humaine, cette discipline a généré de nouvelles connaissances remarquables sur le rôle de l'environnement dans le passé. L'histoire humaine est en train d'être réécrite avec une compréhension que les sociétés humaines ont toujours été positionnées entre résilience et fragilité face aux changements environnementaux. Même les sociétés les plus complexes, comme la Rome antique, sont des études de cas pour les interactions profondes et omniprésentes entre le climat physique et la réponse sociale. Cette nouvelle histoire peut nous aider à comprendre le risque des sociétés modernes face au changement climatique, et la discipline de l'histoire peut remplir son objectif humaniste en racontant l'histoire humaine d'une manière qui affirme notre relation inséparable et intégrale avec le système terrestre.
