Los canadienses Dallas Good (The Sadies), y Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), formaron un proyecto en 2009 llamado The Watchtowers. Las grabaciones para un primer disco tardaron una década en llegar pero el plan quedó truncado con la muerte de Dallas en 2022. Ese disco sale por fin a la luz con Yep Roc Records; “Were the Watchtowers”, un álbum muy emocional, de envolturas psicodélicas y atmósferas cósmicas, con canciones que parecen traídas del más allá.

Un álbum en donde mandan las canciones. Posiblemente el disco más bonito que hemos escuchado este año.

El 18 de junio de 1966 nacía John Michael Dexter Romweber II. Dex Romweber abandonó este mundo en febrero de 2024.
En el día en que cumpliría 60 años celebramos el legado de uno de los artistas más genuinos y cautivadores en el underground de las últimas cuatro décadas. Dexter lideró el influyente grupo Flat Duo jets, un dúo de rock’n’roll primitivo y salvaje que sirvió de inspiración directa a The White Stripes o The Black Keys.
Ya en el siglo XXI continuaría su trayectoria lanzando los discos a su nombre, abriendo su abanico musical y emocional, y esa segunda etapa es la que vamos a sobrevolar.

En el sudeste peninsular, en esa ciudad marciana llamada Benidorm, se celebra una de las fiestas de rock’n’roll más alocadas del universo conocido. El Funtastic Dracula Carnival es un pequeño festival en donde han actuado grandes leyendas del underground junto a grupos totalmente desconocidos traídos de todos los rincones del planeta.
La edición nº21 tendrá lugar los días 9, 10 y 11 del mes de octubre, con cambio de ubicación (regresan al platillo volante de la discoteca Ku). Este lunes 22 de junio se ponen a la venta esas entradas que cada año se venden en menos de dos minutos.
Paloma Borbone y Sr Varo, organizadores del Funtastic, mantienen la tradición de venir a presentarnos de primera voz a los grupos de ese cartel que confeccionan con tanta pasión.

En junio de 1976 se lanzó el cuarto álbum de los Flamin’ Groovies, que también fue el primero de la segunda etapa de esta banda con dos historias bien diferenciadas. “Shake some action” marcó un nuevo rumbo para el grupo californiano, con el fundador Cyril Jordan convertido en capitán y un joven Chris Wilson incorporado como segundo de a bordo. Juntos dieron forma a un fantástico trabajo, álbum pionero del power pop. Un disco que apenas tuvo repercusión comercial pero cuya canción principal se convirtió en auténtico himno para las siguientes generaciones.

Los Dwarves son una banda de punk, sin poses ni subterfugios. Les gusta provocar y agredir a la moral, generar polémica con un sentido del humor no apto en estos tiempos de corrección política.
El disco lo deja claro desde el título, “Jenkem”, en referencia a una droga callejera elaborada con heces y orines fermentados que se consumía en Zambia. En su interior Blag Dahlia y los suyos disparan 14 balazos en 18 minutos. Rápidos y sucios. No hay otra banda como ellos.

Convulsiones en el universo crampiano. Se anuncia la edición de un disco inédito grabado por The Cramps en 1977 a las órdenes de Alex Chilton, un trabajo que se habría adelantado en dos años a su primer EP. Bajo el título “Gravest Gravy” se recogerán aquellas grabaciones primigenias de varias canciones que acabarían en sus dos primeros álbumes. Excusa perfecta para recordar “Fiends of dope island” (2003), el maltratado último trabajo de la banda liderada por Poison Ivy y el fallecido Lux Interior.
