  • How do we support left-handed children in a predominantly right-handed world? Mark Stewart, founder of Left n Write Ltd, shares his journey and insights on the unique challenges faced by left-handed individuals, particularly in educational settings. With over 1 million left-handed children in schools across England, Mark emphasizes the lack of awareness and training for educators on how to assist these students effectively.

Mark started his small business about 30 years ago as a result of trying to find left-handed scissors for his youngest son when he was 4.

Mark's wife Heather had no training in helping left-handed children during her Teacher Training so they started to campaign with their left-handed MP, Peter Luff, to change the Education system to be proactive rather than passive.

They had meetings with Ministers, questions and a 30 minute adjournment debate in the House of Commons, produced a training video in 1999 (now downloadable/interactive and was updated last year) as well as writing an information/activity book titled "So You Think They're Left Handed?" and 3 books titled "Left Hand Writing Skills". We have also produced other resources specifically for left-handed children in education. Over the years I have run over 200 training workshops.

In 2021 Mark co founded and is co-chair of a global group called "LEFT-IN" Left-Handers Education Forum and Training International Network (left-in.org) with the aim to improve the information and education available to the educators of left-handed children around the world.

    Takeaways:

There are over 1 million left-handed children in schools in England, yet teacher training lacks essential support for them. Simple adjustments, like seating arrangements in classrooms, significantly benefit left-handed children and their right-handed peers. Left-handed children face unique challenges in a right-handed world, emphasizing the need for awareness and adjustments. The lack of data on left-handed children in education hinders understanding their needs and potential challenges. Mark Stewart encourages parents to advocate for left-handed children in schools to ensure they receive adequate support.

    Takeaways:

Raising children is a collective responsibility involving parents, teachers, and communities. Love is an action word; it's essential to demonstrate love through actions, not just words. A child's success is influenced by their parents' attitudes and the environment they create. Parents must believe in their child's potential and provide a supportive learning environment. Your attitude shapes your experiences; it's more crucial than the events themselves. Effective parenting involves teaching children essential life skills and encouraging them to be lifelong learners.

  • John Foster is an author, executive, angel investor, and lifelong student of markets, John’s career failed its way through process engineering, operations, business management, M&A, and corporate strategy; finally failing big enough to exit. He now teaches kids the lowdown on business and entrepreneurship, hoping they will fail bigger and sooner.

John discusses the transformative approach of Middle School MBA, a curriculum designed to teach middle school students advanced business and economic concepts. He challenges traditional educational methods, questioning why students aren't leaving high school with a solid grasp of subjects like calculus or business principles, and highlights the need for a curriculum that prepares them for real-world applications. He believes in confronting failure as a vital part of learning, encouraging students to embrace challenges and learn from setbacks. The conversation delves into the significance of fostering critical thinking and resilience in students, ultimately aiming to make learning more relevant and engaging.

    Takeaways:

Students should be equipped to understand complex subjects like business and economics from a young age. Failure is an essential part of learning, and students should be encouraged to confront it. By using innovative teaching methods, we can make business principles accessible to middle schoolers. Empowering teachers to teach advanced concepts can lead to better student engagement and understanding. Resilience and perseverance are key traits that students need to develop for lifelong success.

  • Great buildings need a connection to the outdoors, one that is only achieved through the use of glass. Uncontrolled sunlight causes glare and overheating that can make an otherwise beautiful space painful to be in. New building energy codes can block your way. So Dr. Doug Milburn of Advanced Glazings Ltd created Solera® a line of highly insulating light diffusing glass.

What you should consider about Daylighting Education.

Daylighting done well produces visual comfort. Glare is eliminated. Light intensity is even. Eyes never strain to reveal detail in a space.Daylighting done well doesn’t compromise the thermal efficiency of a building envelope. With the right product, daylighting can actually enhance thermal efficiency.Daylighting done well permits sunlight to penetrate deep within a space, not merely along its perimeter. Glare caused by the sharp contrast between light and dark is eliminated, creating well-lit interiors for occupants.Daylighting done well comes in the form of insulated translucent glazings that provide the highest thermal performance requirements with a very small environmental footprint.Daylighting done well should not necessitate the use of costly passive daylighting controls such as interior blinds or exterior sunshades.

Dr. Doug Milburn is the founder of Advanced Glazings Ltd. He talks to me about his knowledge and passion to create the best possible environment for students to learn. We discuss how this can be achieved and the technology available with his product Solera.

Iona Jackson, Head of Insights at Edurio said: “Staff wellbeing has been an ever-pressing issue due to the recruitment and retention crisis in the education sector. So, it is vital to understand the lived experience of staff working in education today as it relates to their wellbeing so that we can find solutions and provide support to enhance wellbeing across the education sector.

Staff Wellbeing in Academies drew insights from a dataset created based on the Edurio Staff Experience and Wellbeing Survey consisting of more than 11,000 staff responses captured between September 2023 and March 2024. It is available to download at https://home.edurio.com/insights/staff-welbeing-in-schools-2024

“The aim of this report is to give school and trust leaders the information they need to create workplaces for their employees that support, take into account varying needs, and provide fulfilment for educating and raising future generations.”

This data is used to produce national analyses and insights to drive important discussions in education.
